#babel
Meantime the return of my usual regular weekly #music thoughts (as opposed to concert reviews -- needed a break!). This time around, looking at new songs by #DevonGilfillian, #KibiJames, #Babel and the very awesome #DreamWife https://www.patreon.com/posts/some-weekly-79-84237272

Me voy de aquí a ver si dejo de procastinar y trabajo de una vez, que esto no puede ser. Llevo media hora perdiendo el tiempo en la biblioteca de #Babel: libraryofbabel.info
¡Hasta mañana!

okay I've finally read #Babel and I must say I'm not the most convinced by the magic system.
Conceptually, it tries to play in parallel with translation between etymologically unrelated words and related cognates as if they're the same thing, when the principles they work within the book seem quite different. The latter more or less by semantic broadening/narrowing, the former more metaphorical or by connotation.

Ich weigere mich nach wie vor, verkürzt von #KI zu sprechen...😉
VyOS will support babel in the latest version. Yuhu!
Unfortunately VyOS uses the FRR implementation of babel, which seems to have some bugs.

Kira should’ve coughed on him.
If this is an airborne virus, why is no one, including Dr. Bashir, masking up?!
It’s funny how Quark is unaffected.
Of course it’s O’Brien who gets this disease first.
YOU….GOLD….OWE….ME!!
Why go to Quark’s to eat replicated food (and pay for it) if you get replicated food in your own quarters.

@purplepadma Probably no chance of a British production making a TV series out of this. 😁 The author has done a trilogy earlier, so there is enough rope left at the end for a continuation. Though I'd prefer she sticks to friendship/race/colonialism/history instead of the characters aiming for grand acts.
@iwashyna I definitely felt like the author was out of her strong domain once she entered stuff like murder and holding a country hostage. That sort of thing is super hard to pull off in a book. If she had gone for some sort of different ending that focused on friendship or human relationships instead of a grand one, the book could've been so much better.
Babel has this fantastic plot where the 19th century world is driven by technology created by linguists, harnessing the meaning lost in translation. ✨
Weaker towards the end, but R. F. Kuang has put in a lot of language and history research into this book.

With #TypeScript [1] and #Babel [2] switching to ES modules, 2023 has become an important year for ESM.

What do you use in your current projects (excluding dependencies)?
#Toppings #StAndrews have a locked glass cabinet - well I think it’s locked! - of their most #expensive #books. Many special #Tolkien #hardbacks. They also had a signed 1st edition 1st printing copy of #Babel that I’d spotted online this morning but was wilfully ignoring! The glass cabinet of books is high up, just round from the main back till, on the way to the travel books. I must not go look at it again! Many of the books in there were priced at £100 or more. #Bookshops #Fife #Scotland

I just finished the final review of my new book (coming in May): JavaScript All-In-One For Dummies. This one has been my dream to write for over a decade, and I've been working on it for 10 months.
When I used to hire junior developers, I'd find myself (and them) overwhelmed with how much they had to know to be to be productive. This book addresses that.

#Python needs a simpler generics syntax. The proposal PEP 695 is already here: https://peps.python.org/pep-0695/ Hope it advances to the next stage this year. In the mean time, is there a transpiler like #Babel or another way to use proposed syntax for hobby projects?

Reminder.
core-js is maintained by one person and is one of the most ({,in}directly) used library. Heavily used by #Babel, #Rollup, ...

People, especially ones using OSS projects, can just be horrible. Tough read:

Whoompf. I just finished Babel. And y'all. I just. This is a book that, true to Kuang's form, is relentless. Brutal, even. It does not let white folks off the hook for a goddamb second. And it's a linguist scholars' dream of a book, too. I fucking loved every page.

The 'Library of Babel' contains every possible book, but it's not infinite: merely very, very big indeed. Each page of each volume lists a possible combination of letters, numbers and punctuation, so the library included anything that could be written, including an account of your funeral - as well as an identical account containing a single typo. There's a website that provides pages, plus a 'canvas' of *every possible image*.
What a day in the colony to finish reading #Babel by RF Kuang! I absolutely loved it! Tremendous!

When using #babel to #transpile a #nodejs library, is there something you must configure for editor #IntelliSense to work when importing the library? The actual import map is working (I can use modules in my project) but class properties and methods don’t have any IntelliSense in #vscode and in #webstorm class properties are highlighted as “undefined“ (even though they work just fine).

@cardamomaddict Oh, I've been to Kerala and to Sarawak and the spices in both locations are just lovely! I'll check the article more about the links between spices and colonialism. Just finished #Babel, which takes a different approach to colonialism.
Should #NPM libraries handle #bundling themselves?
I'm working in a library for internal use. It will be acting as a utility wrapper for a larger #nodejs library and will be used in two main use cases #CreateReactApp and custom #Webpack projects. This is my first time building a utility library from scratch and was thinking of using Webpack to handle the bundling, tree shaking, and minification, and using #babel for transpiling.
Is this necessary or should this even be done?
@cuboci @wiverson Basically we used to use #Babel to transpile #ES6 (and eventually #typescript) to the ancient version of JS that browsers could understand. That was combined with #Webpack to handle import/require weirdness. Now the world (#svelte) is moving to #swc and #vite since modern browsers can *almost* understand modern (#ESNext) javascript, but it's still all in flux :P
R.F. Kuang, author of #Babel, on the #HarperCollins #Strike.
If you're anywhere near New York City, join the strikers this coming Friday (December 16)!
"I cannot stress how important this strike is for #Authors as well. These are the folks who are putting our books on shelves. Who edit, produce, market, and publicize the manuscripts we turn in. It’s not management up-top who are putting those finishing touches on your favorite books; it’s under-paid, over-worked editorial assistants, publicists, designers, and marketing folks working late nights and crumbling under the burden of too many assignments and not enough support. This strike is about making #Publishing jobs survivable for the people standing up for authors - and as Rachel Kambury put it, they can’t stand up for us if they’re not in the room."

@howard this is a really good question. Unfortunately, I think the thing that brings #OrgMode all of its power is #Emacs. I have tried #Obsidian , #Roam , #Notion etc.
I immediately come back to #OrgMode for the #Emacs power.
- export to #lLatex
- evaluate source code with #Babel
- Willy nilly use of #Elisp
If you don’t need those super emacsy things, I don’t know if you want to go that far down the rabbit hole.
Good morning people of @bookstodon ...
Currently reading #Babel by #RFKuang and loving it. It's as of #JohnLeCarré wrote historical #Fantasy fiction and he himself had Chinese or Indian ancestry. A little bit of #SusanCooper in there, too.
Would love to hear your thoughts!

Currently #reading #Babel, by Rebecca Kuang.
So far, it’s phenomenal, not merely as a story but also as an exposé of the #violence of #colonialism through the weaponisation of #language and #education, the brutalisation of difference, and the idolatries of #whiteness.
