I forgot I had this account for a little bit to be honest, so here's the art I've done recently!
Going clockwise we have Vethryn, my second BG3 character (drow Oath of Vengeance paladin with the dark urge) lying on his back in the sand soon after the nautiloid crash with scenes from the past around him; Vethryn again, in the same general style of portrait I've done for my other Bhaalspawn characters in the past; and then Ithenrael, my first and still favorite character I played through the original Baldur's Gate trilogy, in another try at the blood dream from the first game.

After many years I finally started playing Baldur’s Gate again (the first one). Once I remembered that a thief wasn’t the optimal choice for starting PC I’ve done fairly well. Well, I’ve made it to the Friendly Arms Inn in one piece anyway 😉 #BaldursGate #ForgottenRealms #DnD
I never got to enjoy #BaldursGate. I am actually a very big #cRPG fan (my favourite cRPG being #MightAndMagic VI, followed by #Ultima VII), but I absolutely despise isometric BG-style cRPGs, especially because I find positioning and strategic movement very tedious (i.e. I suck at it), wherein most classic cRPGs (Ultima, #Wizardry, M&M, SSI’s #DnD games) make a combined entity out of your entire party and give you a first-person perspective. You know, the “dungeon crawler”-style cRPG.
Sadly, all of three big names in “dungeon crawlers” have been killed off due to publisher shenenigans:
Might and Magic X was the last M&M to be released; which was pretty much Might and Magic V with a coat of thick paint over it. I personally didn’t play it, because it’s not available without DRM. Even the big box release came with Uplay. Might and Magic IX was a buggy, unfinished mess. The HoMM series got discontinued after HoMM VII, which was apparently so bad that the development of the second expansion was halted and the game was respectively abandoned. A lot like M&M X, HoMM VII was just HoMM III with a coat of very thick paint on it, but also significantly worse. So Ubisoft killed M&M, similar to how they killed The Settlers.
Ultima IX was okay. Still a massive letdown after VIII, but it wasn’t as bad as the drop in quality between M&M VIII and IX. The final nail on the coffin of Ultima was Ultima Online; the franchise became a generic fantasy setting and no single-player games were developed afterwards, despite Lord British’s repeated expression of interest in such a remake of the older Ultima games. EA killed Origin Interactive some time around 2005.
Wizardry 8 was great, although I am not a big fan of Wizardry’s combat system. Similar to Ultima, Wizardry became a generic fantasy setting and spawned Wizardry Online, which failed shortly after. There is a bunch of Japanese spin-off games, but due to the language barrier it’s different to get a hold of these games; they are almost exclusively available in Japan. Sir-Tech was disbanded in 2003 and the rights to Wizardry were then bought by Drecom, a Japanese media company that has no interest in releasing Wizardry games for a Western audience.
Just tragic how many great games developed by auteurs got extinguished in the hands of greedy publishing companies.

@MollyNoise that's a great point, I've been playing video games since #HammurabisCode in say 1977 and fleshing out the main character in terms of family has never been a focus. "The Player" in #SidMeiersPirates rescues his family members but they only generate information and change the ending, anonymous Avatar in #UltimaUnderworld, orphaned child of a wizard in #BaldursGate , Duke in #DukeNukem who may also be an avatar of violence.

I will eventually buy Baldur's Gate 3, but to be honest I never played the first two games much (1998, the year of BG 1 being released, was the beginning of a gaming hiatus for me, lasting well into the 00s). So I picked up Baldur's Gate 1 Enhanced Edition through Steam some time ago and I've been playing it now for the last week. Verdict: It is an amazing game that I find highly playable even by today's standards, so rich in quests and characters, really funny at times and the music/sound design is great! So I started playing #BaldursGate 3. I actually sort of expected to not like it (I didn’t like Divinity: Original Sin for example) but it has had such overwhelming positive reception I couldn’t ignore it.
I’m about 3-4 hours in and damn, I think I’m starting to understand the hype. The world feels full to the brim of story and intrigue. I want to talk to everyone. I even made sure I could talk to the animals.
Thing I dislike about building a character at the beginning of a new game is I don't know what is good, bad, better or worse. They are asking me to make a bunch of decision with no information.

I've done nothing much this holiday weekend but binge watch #criticalrole and play #baldursgate on my iPad.
So Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming out on PS5 in August. It was the reason I bought the Steam Deck 😂 - guess I’ll be selling it. I’ve hardly used it and don’t really feel motivated to.
Collector’s edition looks sweet but 259 EUR …. Kinda tempted still 😬
