I had a "hmm" moment yesterday.
I wanted to update my residential address at my bank.
Instead of providing an HTML form in online banking, they want me to:
1. download an "address change" form PDF
2. fill it up
3. print it
4. sign it
5. send it *via post* to one of their divisions called "Internet Forms"
The "hmm" was particularly hard when writing the "Internet Forms" address on the envelope.
We should always bear in mind that offshore dealing is a convenient way of tax evasion. It is not some set of slick, cool guys beating the system. It is, in fact, a smart-arse form of stealing money that should go to us - to the country to sustain road building, a health service, education and provisions for the elderly. #money #economics #banking #UKnews #sociology #demography
Bullying (partially) worked*: https://www.bnm.gov.my/-/duitnow-qr-payments
"DuitNow QR remains an affordable and cost-effective payment method. For individual customers, the usage of DuitNow QR to make payments will not attract any additional charges. For businesses, any transaction fee imposed on QR payments remains as low as, or lower than, fees imposed on payments using debit cards. Businesses using DuitNow QR as a payment method also do not need to incur recurring costs for POS terminal rental for card-based payment channels or additional overhead and administrative costs for handling cash payments.
"The industry will take measures to minimise the potential impact of transaction fees on small businesses."

You know the banks are desperate when they shove a "You've been pre-approved for a $15,000 Visa" dialog in your face as soon as you log in, and there's only a continue button, which you must tap/click, then you get a close button on the next screen, and only then after tapping close do you see your accounts summary page. I don't want your Visa, and telling me once is good enough! Not on every login, and requiring two clicks/taps to get where I actually want to go. #NoLove #Banking

I have mixed feelings about Google Pay. The dream behind this product is to make wallets obsolete, to make payments trivial across every app, and to protect banking details from third parties. For me, GPay can’t replace my wallet, which makes the NFC payment feature worthless. The online benefits are actually pretty nice, though. My main objection is that the purpose of GPay is not to help me. The design of the app makes it clear: Google’s priority is to access my purchase and banking records, to use that knowledge to build out their profile of me which they share with third parties, and to push me ads, coupons, and promotions. They’re trying to pull the same trick the banks did, to intermediate every purchase so they can get a cut and access valuable financial data. But why should I participate? I get so little out of it.

Credit cards are weird and terrible, but they’re so normalized we rarely question them. We’ve basically given banks the right to skim a huge amount of money right off the top of our economy. They take a cut from every CC purchase, they charge interest rates that would be illegal if CC purchases were classified as “loans,” and they get to monitor shopping habits and sell access to that data. For many people, this is just how digital money works. Debit cards aren’t so bad, but it’s still bizarre that all electronic purchases must go through a bank. As much as I hate cryptocurrency as the “solution” to this problem, it’s a very real issue. We should have an electronic equivalent to cash, it’s weird that we don’t, and it’s wild that we let banks have so much power.

Randomly, and I can't find a cite (because well, Russia is under sanction, and my Russian is super basic) outside of my message history () but I've been entertaining myself with a demo video from a Russian bank's (Tinkoff) new anti-fraud tool. Apparently they've used AI to literally build their own scambait channel?
Or rather, with a team of psychologists and anti-fraud experts, they've generated a whole bunch of personas whose only objective is to waste the time of fraudsters by keeping them on the line for as long as possible (average of 10 mins apparently). The demo video is like listening to kitboga's channel in Russian. Uh... is there to some way to share it without exposing uh me, asking for a friend. #AI #russia #banking #fraud

ok, so, factual correction: Maya is the upcoming one (and was used originally as remittance transfer platform), GCash is the more established player with the market domination.
But here's the thing: the national QR code exists (as mentioned). It's in use. You *can* use GCash app to read the QR code on Maya app, and VICE VERSA. (we tested) You can use your bank app to read a GCash app QR code. You very much practically CAN pay directly without transferring money across e-wallets.
BUT: does this cost you transaction fees?
AND: why wasn't this better communicated by the payment providers?

There is growing resistance to the #cashless society as engineered by the #financialservcies, with much criticism starting to focus on (very early) plans for the global Central Bank of Digital Currencies.
While some of the vocal critics of #digitalcurrency (such as #NigelFarage) have a long culture war history, others are coming to this from concerns around #inequality, #surveillance & suspicions about #banking's fee capture for e-transactions!
for good or for ill, the actual innovations in consumer-facing #banking and #finance are not happening in the US, even as it holds the cultural centre position so once a scam can get launched there eg crypto everyone will have to think about it (eg central banks having to produce position papers etc). only in this year americans will actually begin to understand, en masse, what other ppl mean when we said "electronic bank transfers", and no we don't mean the janky thing most places moved away from in the last 2 decades where you actually have to wait 2 or more business days for a transaction to clear.
why i'm bringing this up? if you have at all any interest in politics ESPECIALLY left-wing politics while we're still in a fiat currency system, you better pay attention. if you still think things like agent banking, mobile money, instant transfers, savings groups (or formalized tontines/kutu), funeral insurance covers, are odd or 'new', you better start reading up. #GlobalSouth
#Banking deserts are expanding, with an annual total of 600 branch closures expected by the end of 2023 & around 60% of the branch network from 2015 now closed.
We are assured that banking hubs will pick up the slack & the Govt. has required (though with no clear enforcement mechanism) 95% of customers to have access to cash within three miles.
The banks are doing well out of the move to online/cashless banking; this change is not a reflection of customer behaviour, its driven by profiteering!
"WE HAVE RESTRICTED YOUR BANK ACCOUNT FOR DEPOSITS AND WITHDRAWALS"😱
Millions of #SMBC / #三井住友銀行 account holders (including mortgage accounts like mine) received this email yesterday. However, it was intended to be a *warning from the bank about #phishing.
It made headline news, and social media in #Japan has been abuzz with posts about this 'poorly worded warning'. Or 'brilliant awareness campaign"?😆 (sorry, I couldn't find an English news article) #JapanNews #banking
So this is like paying for things in countries across #SouthEastAsia with apps like Grab, I assume? If this is so, this is VERY cool. I mean I believe we've been doing this for some time - like it you go to #China you pay things via #Alipay.
I remember in the past, stressing if I can get enough cash in foreign countries when I go abroad for work, or whether my credit card will be accepted.
"According to a joint statement by Bank Indonesia (BI), Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), and the Bank of Thailand (BOT), three MoUs are signed providing a framework for cooperation to promote bilateral transactions in local currencies among the countries.
"The governors of central banks signed the deal in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on the sidelines of the ASEAN Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ meeting.
""The scope of the framework is now expanded to include more eligible cross-border transactions beyond trade and direct investment which would be implemented gradually," the statement read."
@molly0xfff in general, #Banking in the #USA is just trash due to lack of #Regulation.
Whereas in #Germany, #Banks have to accept all legitimate transactions and are only allowed to widthhold or delay payouts based off #sanctions, #MoneyLaundering or actual seizures by courts.
And #SexWorkIsWork so they really ain't in a position to deny any deposits or withdrawals.
I really need to take a look which banks allow non-resident customers with just remote KYC & AML and not require in-person visits.
American payment/banking system security is a joke. Random websites asking for card details (instead of using some shared and secure payment portals). Barely any functioning 2FA. I could go on. I need to create a one-time virtual card every time I pay to feel remotely secure (thankfully my bank at least makes this easy).
No wonder people in US are getting scammed left and right. Even "proper" website payments feel like a scam to me.
Walked into a supermarket store, its shelves full of candy, and I decided to turn on "fly mode" (levitation).
I said, "I'm not classy like Pepper, find me a really nice dress to wear. 😊"
On a related note: now that we all do #banking online in Europe, how do #parents introduce their #children to banking? When I was about six years old I could just walked to a very nearby bank branch and deposit and withdraw money there. I guess we could do introduce the kids to that, but then I'm not sure if that even makes sense today.
I'm reasonably satisfied with #N26's app, but my spouse is at another #bank, so their 'shared spaces' doesn't really make sense to me. Anyway, I like having a separate bank account for the family, because I don't want to manage transactions after the fact.
Boosts are appreciated, because I don't think anyone with an opinion would otherwise find this post 😘
I'd just say that one should be wary, exercise caution, do research and be diligent before choosing any exchange or whatever platform.
Personally I wished #Monero :monero: and not #PayPal :paypal: , #CashApp & #Venmo (the latter two are U.S. exclusive because they don't want to follow strict #EU #banking and #ConsumerProtection laws!) was mainstream, as it's cheaper than traditional payment processors on sums above €10.
Noting the real anger about #banks closing, the Govt. will 'require' all people to be within 3 miles of banking facilities...
But the commitment remains vague, may actually be able to be 'covered' by existing (limited) #PostOffice counter services, and so once again sounds good but will result in almost no real change to rural #banking.
But the right wing press will be claiming #RishiSunak is on our side... read my lips: he isn't!
I've been real happy with Wealthfront up until now. Undermining 2FA App security by enabling SMS hijacking capability is so universally stupid.
To then enable it by default and make users opt out is...whew.
I've emailed their support and asked that they share my concern with their management and security team. They've traditionally been very responsive. We'll see if they come through once again.

Q. can #NigelFarage (finally) be a cause for good?
If his focus on #debanking is wide & comprehensive in its support for the victims of #banking organisations (too aggressive) application of politically exposed person & other rules intended to constrain financial crime, then yes he can...
However, a self-centred, vain seasoned misleader of people may not be the best champion for this necessary campaign... maybe he'll rise to the occasion, or maybe not.
The paperback version of my book «Asynchronous Exchange: The End of Capitalism» will become available on August 5, 2023.
Should have been until September 5, but considering the disastrous summer in the northern hemisphere, I deem more convenient to just go forward.
It does, of course, say a lot when people who are vulnerable to corruption and bribery are complaining that there are too many safeguards protecting them from being corrupted, or, indeed, blackmailed.
Including the, err, MINISTER IN CHARGE OF THE FUCKING #POLICE.
This is, of course, all happening in broad daylight.
"Many MPs falling foul of bank rules on ‘politically exposed persons’, says [#ChrisPhilp]...
They want far right views protected, and they want less ethics and regulation of the #Banking sector. This has been the aim all along.
Lloyds bank, of course, is a total slapper who will take on anyone, regardless of how dangerous or corrupt they are.
This is a victory for #Fascists and crooks.
So all this business about Nigel Farage screaming blue murder because he's been politically victimised by Evil Woke Lefties at his bank?
The truth is a lot more prosaic:
Farage banks at Coutts, which is a private bank and has strict "minimum account balance" policies. It seems that Farage simply fell below that threshold, so they asked him to move his accounts to their normal persons bank: Natwest.
That's it. No victimisation, no politicisation. Just Farage is down to his last couple of million or something.
