A smoggy visit to the #WNCNatureCenter in #Asheville today (our air quality is awful this week, please send a deluge.)

Their pair of #RedWolves had a litter of NINE #pups, and they were out and about today. Some of them may be released when they are 1-2 years old. No pictures possible.

The big #bear was staying out of the sun (like me) and the #otters were just having a blast swimming. Always fun to visit.

A large black bear is lying on the 2nd story of a 3 story structure in the bear enclosure. Seemed quite bored, but then it was hot and the air quality is terrible today.

An otter is swimming underwater next to the glass viewing port. He's currently upside down, ready to make his turn and push off from the glass. They make moving through water look absolutely effortless.

The underside of a fast-moving otter, you can see all 4 of his paws as he prepares to push off the glass in front of us, and leap away at 90 degrees, still underwater. This is clearly a well-traveled route for this guy.

I'm sharing this photo I took of two black bears playing for #SilentSunday because that's what I was when I came across them while hiking...I kept perfectly silent and still as they wrestled like I wasn't even there. I'm still not sure if they even saw me. Eventually they curled up for a nap behind a bush.

I couldn't tell you why exactly but I think of bears as my spirit animal. I don't get a chance to see them much anymore since moving...I miss those experiences. But the first time I saw one when I was hiking alone, I was terrified!

For all the folk beliefs in “haunted” forests, I feel the only thing that can make a forest feel truly haunted is human-caused destruction.

Inspired by the “Ghost Bear Family” BBC documentary and by the aesthetic of Japanese woodblock prints. This is the first large painting I managed in a long time as I'm aiming to resume gallery shows as soon as possible.

My favorite experience during this multi-year @natgeo assignment on urban bears, coyotes and raccoons was capturing this massive black bear (looks brown I know but it's def a black bear:) as he left his abandoned house den in search of neighborhood food. He moved so slowly that my motion trigger didn't always go off at the right moments, but despite being a bit startled by the flash, he came right back before dawn and nestled back in backwards!
