Fun fact: A big #bumblebee queen searches for a nesting place in my #garden for three days. She can't decide which one of the messy places she prefers.🤭
I don't know what the curious dog is telling her either, who is marvelling at her. Earlier, the two of them agreed. She takes a safe distance and probably lives diagonally under the leafcutter #bees. They live right at the entrance to the house. In former times, a #beehive at the house entrance was considered a lucky charm!

Traditional round beehive, woven from rye straw with attachments made from blackberry strings in our apiary at the museum. It has an iron hook at the top, which was used to hang it under the eaves for protection.

My favorite bee, the metallic green sweat #bees, Agapostemon, was just featured in my favorite bee blog, Honey Bee Suite!

Despite the ungainly name, these are common bees throughout North America. Their shiny green bodies glint as they flit from flower to flower. Their abdomen is often striped black and white, or black and yellow. Agapostemon nest in the ground. They also have cousins who nest in logs resting on the ground.

You probably don't even know there are Asian, African, and N/S American honeybees, or the many other, often critically endangered pollinating insects that exist on every continent. In a way, they are colonized by Europe and subjected to cultural cleansing. European humans did that I mean, because it's not like it's the bees' fault they were brought here and intensively farmed for honey.

When you say #savethebees, make sure you're trying to save #bees that are actually supposed to be there.

Did you know that the #European #honeybee parallels European humans in their #colonialism of the rest of the world? Okay, that claim is giving human traits to brainless insects, but it's kind of true. European #bees out compete and kill native insects like other bee species, wasps, ants, butterflies, moths, etc. They cause the flora to change to what they like (usually invasive European plants) by wiping out all the native plants they don't pollinate, and they also wipe out their pollinators.

If you have a lawn, and would like it to help #bees, there are a few things you can do less. Don't use pesticides. Don't use herbicides. Don't mow for the first few weeks when the grass begins to grow. This will allow wildflowers such as clover, violets, and self-heal to feed #pollinators. In England, and many parts of the US, this time is May. So this practice is commonly known as #NoMowMay.

Profile shot of a moonlight cactus (Selenicereus species) flower. The flower is large, up to 25 centimetres long, held on a single stalk. It’s roughly cylindrical, slightly flared at the mouth, and tapered at the base. The pure white petals are surrounded by large numbers of bracts, the outer layer green and the inner layer yellow, peeling back from the flower but still surrounding and supporting it.
A closeup looking directly into the cactus flower. Inside the ring of white petals is a veritable forest of very long orange-yellow stamens, the filaments the length of the flower, curled inwards at the ends, and the anthers forming a dense circle at the mouth of the flower. Underneath the profusion of anthers is what looks like a small yellow anemone flower, with long, tapered cylindrical petals, however it’s actually the flower’s ornate stigma.
An extreme closeup of the flower’s stigma and some of the circular forest of anthers above and behind it.
A bee departing the moonlight cactus flower, just about to clear the top petals. It’s flying away from the camera, its body liberally dusted with pollen, and its back legs laden with yellow cylinders of pollen gathered from the flower’s copious supply.

a fuzzy yellow and black bee flapping both wings vigorously as it moves between small pastel yellow and pink flowers. all 6 limbs are splayed wildly. their bee fur is a bright yellow and i love it.
now that the fuzz bee has landed again it is beginning to drink from the pale flower

My own personal favourite Bee photo, such an important little thing and beautiful with it.
