One of my red flags on social media is people saying “yeah duh obviously” to new research being reported.
It’s not that that they don’t agree with the studies. They do agree. But they think the research is superfluous. They already know this stuff.
But often they *don’t know*. They’ve a hunch from a couple of encounters or an anecdote or hearsay. They’ve not tested their beliefs at all.
The obviousness has beguiled them.

I see far fewer (not none, but definitely fewer) #opinions I #disagree with on here, compared to the before place.
Contrary to a #belief I used to hold a long time ago, that does not in any way make me feel like my opinions are #mainstream. I still read #news, I am still very aware of #contradictory opinions to mine existing and I’m definitely aware that on many topics (including not a few I’d consider very important) I am most definitely in the minority. But I feel better, I #stress out about it less, I definitely have far less (basically none) negative experiences around such things happening.
It’s much easier to either not engage at all or at the very least engage in a much more polite and constructive way with differing opinions when there isn’t an overwhelming amount of them.
#EchoChambers are obviously bad, but we’ve seen very well that forced continuous cross-pollination of opposing opinions doesn’t really lead to any constructive outcomes or bring us to understand each other better and manage to either find a middle ground or to have one side persuade the other.

Specifically:
I understand people's need for privacy, but this is going to be a huge issue, because the Mastodon community has lots of ideas about privacy that are not backed up by the architecture. A lot of them are really backed up by the fact that nobody was on Mastodon, people were saying "oh, I have private conversations" because there's nobody in the room. Now that everybody's in the room, there's nothing in Mastodon that makes anything private. In fact, Mastodon has much, much, much worse privacy implications and design than Facebook, or Twitter, or YouTube, or basically any commercial platform. It's much more public than any of those.

@georgetakei The problem with #liberals is that we always allow things to be put in opposition, "this or that", when it should be inclusive, such as "this and that."
Why do conservatives take full ownership of the so-called Religious Freedom Restoration Act? Plus patriotism?
It's not just freedom "of" religion, or freedom "from" religion, but our #choice on how we practice our #religion, #spirituality, or #belief, as well as #patriotism itself.
