I was looking at the REI Generation but I’m worried about the fact that it’s discontinued for some reason (maybe I shouldn’t be?) and past that I have no idea where to start.
This is a fantastic article on the Escape Collective on cycling with hearing loss:
"For people with severe hearing loss, listening is not automatic or passive; it is hard, multi-sensory work, an all-encompassing cognitive load. Solo rides, as ever, were an escape, a solace of simple pedal strokes" https://escapecollective.com/ride-sounds/?mc_cid=b390fc5caa&mc_eid=fc31b4c0ad

Things to do when your mates have a sound-system on a bike and another cargo bike with a massive projector strapped to it: ride through the woods making an immersive sound and lightscape 😁 🚲 📣
Stopping off in a tunnel to watch some videos while toasting marshmallows and drinking hot toddies is also recommended.
@Schouten_B @LaNaehForaday there's always the importance of thinking through what's needed to enable/encourage use of micro mobility systems - Eg https://mastodon.online/@BrentToderian/111508563526489677
(And I bicycle commuted in a Chicago winter 40+ years ago, and winter bicycle use in the 79s. Cold weather is less of a problem than heat. But even for heat there are possible solutions)
#GoodMorning #Zwift! Finally, I’ve started the #cycling session with some decent mindset and it was much less mundane and annoying, maybe also because my health has slightly improved. 99% Invisible is going to run a year-long book club/podcast on The Power Broker, Robert Caro’s biography of Robert Moses, the man who spent decades building NYC’s car infrastructure. #BikeTooter #urbanism
That book is going straight onto my Xmas wish list.
Just read the paper on VirginiaTech Bicycle Helmet ratings (https://vtechworks.lib.vt.edu/server/api/core/bitstreams/5e7e952d-8e1c-4926-b090-7898bb005e13/content) and it looks like the high impact is at velocity of 7.3 m/s (table 2). But that is only 16 mph, far lower than my ebike's top speed of 28mph. This means I have to rate the NTA 8776 rating (which tests upto 28mph) higher than Virginia Tech testing. #BikeTooter
Edit: I was wrong! The NTA 8776 test’s drop is only 6.5 m/s, so lower than Virginia tech. So i think VirginiTech supremacy continues!
Currently wearing this while working so i can see how comfortable it feels long term. The bluegrass vanguard core bicycle helmet. #BikeTooter much lighter than my motorcycle helmet, and seems reasonably comfortable
Such inconsistent information about wether the Lazer Cage Kineticore helmet asses NTA 8776 certification or not :( I've just emailed their support to ask. Several websites claim it does support that, but their official one doesn't and neither does their manual. But it looks so much prettier than the Bluegrass Vanguard Core... #BikeTooter
oof landslide on the tracks - amtrak and cascadia rail service seattle to portland down
latest update on the burke-gilman closure just south of matthews beack park is re-opening at 4:30, the train landslide is much bigger, not 'til thursday :(
Recently YouTube's algorithm has decided that because I watch videos about electric commuter bikes (which are usually capped at 20 or 28mph), I am clearly interested in watching people with "e-bikes" (really electric motorcycles) traveling 50mph or more in a 30mph zone on busy city streets.
No, #YouTube, I don't want to watch people blatantly break the law for no good reason and giving people who ride regular e-bikes a bad reputation.
Now 9.5 miles/15.2km with 400 feet/122m of climbing in under 26 minutes is what I call a respectable time for a pre-lunch bike ride. #BikeTooter
yikes! burke-gilman landslide at riviera, just south of matthews beach park. they're setting up a detour.
On our jaunt around various places Manchester last Sunday (which included a glorious cuppa with @Maker_of_Things and @suearcher ) we nipped in a Decathlon store. I saw this new concept #ebike they had. Struck me it borrows a lot from Tern and perhaps the Kona Ute. Be interesting to read some user reviews when it's released #BikeTooter
Ive had a double whammy of a day on the bike. Close pass this morning from a bus and then this afternoon another close pass from a hearse.
Yes. A hearse. With a coffin in the back.
Maybe business is a little slow so perhaps bumping off a cyclist would help... doubtful if you use the company car though.
Although cycling is not the focus of the linked toot below, people on the #bikeTooter hashtag might appreciate its 1924 graphic.

Unicycling Across Latvia #BikeTooter
He doesn't mention accessibility, but demonstrates the importance of it as he reaches part after part of the trail where he has to lift his packed unicycle up flights of stairs.
Sometimes the terrain makes this unavoidable, but lots of places don't involve disabled people in planning & design so it's not like the utmost is done to make trail infrastructure more accessible in most countries.
"Cycling is one of the most sustainable and healthy means of #transport that exists, yet cycling remains under-prioritized in the mobility mix in most places around the world and in the wider #climate agenda.

Rode for two blocks on my bicycle without the front forks (put them in lockout) and wow what a difference. am very glad I have this front suspension! #BikeTooter
A little over a week and eight rides into AIDS/Lifecycle training season proper, and the old ham hocks are finally getting into shape. 23.6 miles/38km and 1200 feet/378m of climbing in 75 minutes is only three minutes off my best times for courses like this one. #BikeTooter
Really screwed up my front wheel here. Had the front tire under-inflated, made a sharper-than-normal turn, and it put enough lateral force on the rim to bend it out of shape this much. Not sure simply trueing it will help, but that will be my first stop.
> If we listened to people like you more or less vagabonds and barefoot tramps, we would not have got beyond the bicycle.
> That's just it; we would ride bikes in the cities, there wouldn't be those thousands of cars with hard, closed people all alone in them, we would see youngsters arm in arm, hear laughter and singing, see nice things in people's faces; joy and love would be reborn everywhere, birds would return to the few trees left in our streets and we would replant the trees the Monster killed. Then we would feel real shadows and real colours and real sounds; our cities would get their souls back, and people too.

Santana tandem (medium) for only $200! Sacramento, CA https://sacramento.craigslist.org/bik/d/sacramento-santana-tandem/7685571728.html
I just get in these moods where I want to share these things. I can't find the deals I'm looking for, but this is a deal for someone.
One thing that is a PITA about under-seat steering is that the cycle is nowhere near as easy to push along as it is to ride. I have USS for disability reasons. The Haluzak has a flat back tire and right now my car is difficult to put a bike into. The car rack I have won't work for it. If it were above-seat steering, I could walk it to a bike shop from here, but it would be really painful to attempt to do that with USS. #BikeTooter
Nice to hear "being a weight weenie" on this list. One of the arguments an employee of the only recumbent-friendly cycle shop in town made to me in defense of Davis' inaccessible racks was that "we need" those racks so that upright bikes don't fall down.
