My son and I attended a LongNow.org talk by Ryan Phelan on Bringing Biotech to Conservation. We were shocked to hear about the sudden die-off of Pacific kelp forests off of Northern California since 2014 due to a wasting disease attacking a certain kind of sea stars resulting in an explosion of sea urchin population which block the recovery of kelp forests. I wanted to mashup large scale (factory) processes with tiny scale (#microbiology) processes. So I made the culture flask HUGE, like it was a bit of the #factory building.
I also wanted to contrast messy #biological & uniform #industrial processes. That's why there's a regular pattern of filamentous #microbes growing in tidy rows but they're still all a bit different.

I'd always thought that the Human Genome Project accomplished this back in the early 2000s, but that was actually assembled using DNA from several people (and it still had some gaps and errors). Now, we can read the entire genome from one person without gaps.

A new tool called HELIX has been published by Massachusetts General Hospital scientists that enables the insertion of wild type genes into cells to fix aberrant and damaging mutations.
Prior work with these CRISPR-associated transposases (CASTs) had off-target and proper insertion problems that limited their usability.
