I did a very bad thing today. I was using Merlin to identify birds by the sounds they make. I was surprised to see Indigo Bunting come up in the list. I told my mom. She asked to hear the song and I played it loud cuz she’s getting old. And an Indigo Bunting came and landed for a minute on the deck railing three feet away. They then stuck around the area for hours thinking my phone was their mate-to-be. I felt so awful. I apologized a lot. #Birding #birdwatching #SoMuchGuilt

European Starlings are another invasive species introduced to North American in NYC about 130-140 years ago (supposedly so that performances of Shakespeare's plays could have more authentic surroundings). At least these are gorgeous, at least when you can see their iridescence.

House sparrows are invasive in NYC, but they've been here for at least 130 years, and I think they aren't doing well in the UK where they're native.

I got some great photos of a Great Crowned Flycatcher at the Tennesee Wildlife Refuge. I think these may be some of my best bird photos yet.

#birds #birding #BirdPhotography #BirdsOfMastodon #NaturePhotography #Photography

A Great Crowned Flycatcher sitting on a small offshoot of a large horizontal branch. The bird is above the photographer, its head is facing to the left, its body facing towards the camera. You can see the Flycatcher's yellow underside which fades into a grey upper chest, neck, and head. The tips of the bird's tail feathers are visible below and just behind the larger branch. The background is a mixture of out of focus green foliage and light blue sky.
A Great Crowned Flycatcher sitting on a small offshoot of a large horizontal branch. The bird is above the photographer, its head is facing down and to the right, its body facing towards the camera. The grey feathers on the head of the bird are puffed up, and the white feathers on its chin are also puffed up. The beak is slightly opened and you can see sunlight shining through the beat, highlighting the inside of the beak with a warm orange color. The bird is using its left leg (right side of the photo) to scratch its face.

So, given the rise of merlin bird id, are their remote microphones? I would very much like a microphone I could mount under the eve of the house, weather resistant, which can be connected to by a computer or iphone. Purpose is monitoring bird calls (records, uploads periodically - or constantly), etc.

Anybody know anything to put me on the scent?

Back to a louder dawn chorus this morning in the neighborhood. Beautiful Northern Cardinal song. Pleasantly surprised to hear a Brown Thrasher.

Spotted a bald eagle while on a walk along the Bay Trail today! I had read that there was a nesting pair at the golf course nearby, but their nest is 100 feet up (30 meters) up a tree. A feature of my old apartment was the #BaitTree - right behind my desk was a window that had a #persimmon tree so close that you could pick persimmons from inside the apartment. A day of cycling along the Danube, into the wetlands & woods of the Lobau, and listening to birdsong. Several nightingales singing from bushes along the river, an icterine warbler and a golden oriole in the woods, but the highlight for me was a great reed warbler performing his amazing song from a reed head bent by his weight. Now listening to the frogs croaking in the Alte Donau

The peacocks of the #swallow family the #violetgreenswallow is the most colourful of the sky acrobats. Under the right glancing light their wings bright up with not just purple and greens but many hues of blues... They also remind me a little of Pingu's little sister, Pinga... Noot! Noot!

A close photo of a swallow perched on a curved roof tile. The tile is a greyish-pink. The swallow has a brilliant dark green cap and cape and upper back. Their wings sweeps out beyond their short tail. Their lower back is a dark violet. Their face and chest is pure white. Their beak is small, short and black. They are an athletic looking bird. Very short legs. I don't know that they ever really do a lot of walking.

Shared my spotting scope with another birder today.

I’m so woodpecker-crazy that I woke up this morning with the word “Dryobates” rolling around my head like a little tune. (The genus name of the downy woodpecker.) Even I think this is a little excessive: it’s probably caused by not having seen any woodpeckers since the downy pictured below, over a WEEK ago. So I should probably go #birding more, and continue looking for woodpeckers!

Okay, I'm really proud of this video: An Egyptian goose blinking in slow motion.

First, it closes its half-transparent nictitating membrane and, at the same time, starts wiggling the eye (not sure why, but I captured additional blinks, and it always did that). Then, the normal eyelid closes, after which the nictitating membrane retracts underneath the closed eyelid!
