I did a very bad thing today. I was using Merlin to identify birds by the sounds they make. I was surprised to see Indigo Bunting come up in the list. I told my mom. She asked to hear the song and I played it loud cuz she’s getting old. And an Indigo Bunting came and landed for a minute on the deck railing three feet away. They then stuck around the area for hours thinking my phone was their mate-to-be. I felt so awful. I apologized a lot. #Birding #birdwatching #SoMuchGuilt

I went from not knowing of the existence of the mot mot to seeing two different types of motmots and being in awe of both.

European Starlings are another invasive species introduced to North American in NYC about 130-140 years ago (supposedly so that performances of Shakespeare's plays could have more authentic surroundings). At least these are gorgeous, at least when you can see their iridescence.

House sparrows are invasive in NYC, but they've been here for at least 130 years, and I think they aren't doing well in the UK where they're native.

So, given the rise of merlin bird id, are their remote microphones? I would very much like a microphone I could mount under the eve of the house, weather resistant, which can be connected to by a computer or iphone. Purpose is monitoring bird calls (records, uploads periodically - or constantly), etc.
Anybody know anything to put me on the scent?

Spotted a bald eagle while on a walk along the Bay Trail today! I had read that there was a nesting pair at the golf course nearby, but their nest is 100 feet up (30 meters) up a tree. Cool to one hanging out on the shore. Photo is a little fuzzy because we didn't want to get too close. #photography #BaldEagle #bird #birding #BayArea #EastBay

A male Baltimore Oriole is a stunning bird to see singing at the top of a tree.

A feature of my old apartment was the #BaitTree - right behind my desk was a window that had a #persimmon tree so close that you could pick persimmons from inside the apartment. The lure of yummy yummy persimmons was always tempting enough to ignore the photographer who was close enough that minimum focus distance became a problem. This #hiyodori was probably much more annoyed at the #snow than I was. #BrownCheekedBulbul #birding #photography

A day of cycling along the Danube, into the wetlands & woods of the Lobau, and listening to birdsong. Several nightingales singing from bushes along the river, an icterine warbler and a golden oriole in the woods, but the highlight for me was a great reed warbler performing his amazing song from a reed head bent by his weight. Now listening to the frogs croaking in the Alte Donau

I won't deny that I've brightened up the reflection a little, and I've obviously desaturated the rest of the image (not that there was much color to begin with) – with that disclaimer out of the way:

I’m so woodpecker-crazy that I woke up this morning with the word “Dryobates” rolling around my head like a little tune. (The genus name of the downy woodpecker.) Even I think this is a little excessive: it’s probably caused by not having seen any woodpeckers since the downy pictured below, over a WEEK ago. So I should probably go #birding more, and continue looking for woodpeckers!

I heard a calling woodpecker in the distance while on an evening walk, so I investigated around a bit and was pleasantly surprised to see a young great spotted woodpecker high up in a hole!
It was most likely waiting for its parent(s) to come back with some tasty food.

Okay, I'm really proud of this video: An Egyptian goose blinking in slow motion.
First, it closes its half-transparent nictitating membrane and, at the same time, starts wiggling the eye (not sure why, but I captured additional blinks, and it always did that). Then, the normal eyelid closes, after which the nictitating membrane retracts underneath the closed eyelid!

... and an adult Black-crowned Night Heron, same pond as the juvie posted previously. Two winters ago (2021-2) into the spring there were a good number of juvies and a few adults overwintering at this site. Last winter there were very few and I didn't see any at all for a while until a short time ago. I'm glad to see some are back.
