Watched the cormorants and gulls play musical poles from the bird hide on Park Island this morning.
An airborne bird has advantage over a perching bird because of sheer momentum, but if you have the charisma, you can keep your perch in the face of an invader by squawking loudly enough.
Saw more than one incoming cormorant end up in the water after being squawked at.
Then they are all like "bloody hell don't you know I don't have oil on my feathers, they're not waterproof! And now I have to start all over drying them off."
Nobody does grumpy quite like a cold, wet cormorant.

These cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) were among a bunch that would perch in this oak tree every afternoon this past winter.

This is a neighbourhood cat we've affectionately named Fred, as we don't know his real name yet.
Fred is very sweet to humans, but Fred has a serious issue with birds and other small critters.
Fred routinely goes after the crows. He wants to catch them in his murder mittens.
I am surprised Fred being such a jerk hasn't put the crows off of visiting me.

Was looking at the local swans and their cygnets when I noticed, out of the corner of my eye, something moving fairly close to me – a young blackbird, not yet as wary as an adult.

This gorgeous Red Tailed Hawk posed beautifully for the camera in Guelph Ontario Canada and the colorful fall foliage was the perfect background. The Red Tails are very large raptors and usually sit near fields with their eyes focused on the ground looking for moles and more.

Well, there goes the neighborhood! The Grackles have moved in and they're terrible neighbors. They bully other birds, are water hogs and really, the constant domestic disputes are a bit much! You know it's bad when the pooch actually motivates to chasing them off 🐶 😼
The Raven parents did it 🥰 ! Their three young ones, still with baby beaks and blue eyes, made it out of the nest today.
They had a hard time hanging on to the branches in the strong winds. Now waiting for breakfast to be served, please.

This is a red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus). I've probably posted this photo before, a long time ago. I took this photo in 2014 and am hoping to see one again this year. But so far, no luck.
"The gorgeous Red-headed Woodpecker is so boldly patterned it’s been called a “flying checkerboard,” with an entirely crimson head, a snow-white body, and half white, half inky black wings. These birds don’t act quite like most other woodpeckers: they’re adept at catching insects in the air, and they eat lots of acorns and beech nuts, often hiding away extra food in tree crevices for later. I took Ben to the veterinarian yesterday. He has something going on with his front paws. This was the third time that I took him for the same thing. However, we saw a different doctor this time who knew exactly what was going on, something-itis. The doc told me and showed me pictures. We got some antibiotics, some anti-itch pills, and some antiseptic wipes.
Have you ever heard the saying; "be the person your dogs think you are?" My dogs help with my humanity. Things like compassion and empathy were never easy for me, I had to work at them. I think empathy and compassion go together. You have to be able imagine what someone else is going through to understand how they feel.

Pleasent Surprise
This bird flew by yesterday. I thought it was a great egret. But after reviewing the photograph, discovered that it is a cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis). I've seen lots of these around, especially in pastures as we drive through the countryside. This is the first time I've photographed one.
"The short, thick-necked Cattle Egret spends most of its time in fields rather than streams. It forages at the feet of grazing cattle, head bobbing with each step, or rides on their backs to pick at ticks. This stocky white heron has yellow plumes on its head and neck during breeding season. Originally from Africa, it found its way to North America in 1953 and quickly spread across the continent. Elsewhere in the world, it forages alongside camels, ostriches, rhinos, and tortoises—as well as farmers’ tractors." - allaboutbirds.org

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata)
These birds are around frequently, but they are a bit shyer than some of the other birds. I see them often dropping to the ground, out of the oak tree in the backyard grabbing what they want and flying back into the tree. I suppose it's what other birds do as well, the blue jays are just larger, and blue, easier to notice.

Red Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)
I had thoughts and curiosities about the hole that this woodpecker is at, but then the top of the tree fell off and the hole was gone. It was in the late fall, one person told me that there was no way she way building a nest because it was too early. But both a male and a female were around the tree fairly regularly.
