The scene depicts a breathtaking evening atmosphere with several flocks of pigeons flying against the backdrop of the setting sun. Their silhouettes stand out distinctly against the luminous beige sky. The power lines, over which the pigeons are soaring, give the photo the impression of an exhilarating race. The dark lines of the power lines create a dynamic atmosphere, as if the pigeons are staging an airborne competition. The scene is simultaneously peaceful and captivating, and the flying pigeons add a touch of elegance to the setting.

Watched the cormorants and gulls play musical poles from the bird hide on Park Island this morning.

An airborne bird has advantage over a perching bird because of sheer momentum, but if you have the charisma, you can keep your perch in the face of an invader by squawking loudly enough.

Saw more than one incoming cormorant end up in the water after being squawked at.

Then they are all like "bloody hell don't you know I don't have oil on my feathers, they're not waterproof! And now I have to start all over drying them off."

Nobody does grumpy quite like a cold, wet cormorant.

View through a long, narrow, horizontal gap in a wooden bird hide. It's an early morning view of a body of water. The sky is bright with the rising sun, and that's reflected in the water. A row of poles stand in the water nearby, with two cormorants perched there, one with its wings spread to dry.

A view from below.

These cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) were among a bunch that would perch in this oak tree every afternoon this past winter.

"A treat to find in your binocular viewfield, the Cedar Waxwing is a silky, shiny collection of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, rakish black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on the wing feathers. In fall these birds gather by the hundreds to eat berries, filling the air with their high, thin, whistles. In summer you’re as likely to find them flitting about over rivers in pursuit of flying insects, where they show off dazzling aeronautics for a forest bird." -

These three cedar waxwings are spots of yellow in a budding oak tree. The photograph is from below.

"The Cedar Waxwing is a medium-sized, sleek bird with a large head, short neck, and short, wide bill. Waxwings have a crest that often lies flat and droops over the back of the head. The wings are broad and pointed, like a starling’s. The tail is fairly short and square-tipped. Cedar Waxwings are pale brown on the head and chest fading to soft gray on the wings. The belly is pale yellow, and the tail is gray with a bright yellow tip. The face has a narrow black mask neatly outlined in white. The red waxy tips to the wing feathers are not always easy to see." -

This is a red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus). I've probably posted this photo before, a long time ago. I took this photo in 2014 and am hoping to see one again this year. But so far, no luck.

"The gorgeous Red-headed Woodpecker is so boldly patterned it’s been called a “flying checkerboard,” with an entirely crimson head, a snow-white body, and half white, half inky black wings. These birds don’t act quite like most other woodpeckers: they’re adept at catching insects in the air, and they eat lots of acorns and beech nuts, often hiding away extra food in tree crevices for later. This magnificent species has declined severely in the past half-century because of habitat loss and changes to its food supply." -

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #RedHeadedWoodpecker

This bird is perched on the right side of a wooden bird feeder. The bird's body is facing to the left, but its head is turned completely around and faces right. As its name implies, its head is a very rich red down to its shoulders. Its eyes are black, and its beak is grayish, but black at the tip. The beak is shaped a bit like a sharpened pencil. The back and wings are black, but a little more than half way down the feathers are white. The underbody is completely white. The black tail props against the feeder.

"Red-headed Woodpeckers are medium-sized woodpeckers with fairly large, rounded heads, short, stiff tails, and powerful, spike-like bills. Adults have bright-red heads, white underparts, and black backs with large white patches in the wings, making the lower back appear all white when perched. Immatures have gray-brown heads, and the white wing patches show rows of black spots near the trailing edge." -

Good morning. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

I took Ben to the veterinarian yesterday. He has something going on with his front paws. This was the third time that I took him for the same thing. However, we saw a different doctor this time who knew exactly what was going on, something-itis. The doc told me and showed me pictures. We got some antibiotics, some anti-itch pills, and some antiseptic wipes.

Have you ever heard the saying; "be the person your dogs think you are?" My dogs help with my humanity. Things like compassion and empathy were never easy for me, I had to work at them. I think empathy and compassion go together. You have to be able imagine what someone else is going through to understand how they feel.

Pleasent Surprise

This bird flew by yesterday. I thought it was a great egret. But after reviewing the photograph, discovered that it is a cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis). I've seen lots of these around, especially in pastures as we drive through the countryside. This is the first time I've photographed one.

"The short, thick-necked Cattle Egret spends most of its time in fields rather than streams. It forages at the feet of grazing cattle, head bobbing with each step, or rides on their backs to pick at ticks. This stocky white heron has yellow plumes on its head and neck during breeding season. Originally from Africa, it found its way to North America in 1953 and quickly spread across the continent. Elsewhere in the world, it forages alongside camels, ostriches, rhinos, and tortoises—as well as farmers’ tractors." -

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #CattleEgret

This egret is flying from lower left to upper right in the frame, the background is blue sky.

The egret's head is set close to the body with almost no neck. Though the front of the breast looks like a neckbone similar to long necked egrets exists, I'll need to research that. The yellow bill is shorter that the great egret's bill. The bird has bulging pale yellow eyes on each side of its head. To me, the eyes look like the button eyes of a doll. The white wings are spread in an "M" shape and are a bit translucent in the light, silhouettes of the wing's bones are visible. Like the rest of the bird the underbody is white, but its had a dark yellow patch of feathers in the center of its breast. The color yellow fades towards the back of the bird. Legs and feet angle straight back and are shrouded in shadow.

"Compared with other herons, Cattle Egrets are noticeably small and compact. They have relatively short legs and a short thick neck. The straight, daggerlike bill is shorter and thicker than other herons. They have medium-length, broad, rounded wings. Adult Cattle Egrets are all white with a yellow bill and legs. In breeding plumage they have golden plumes on their head, chest, and back. Juveniles have dark legs and bill." -

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata)

These birds are around frequently, but they are a bit shyer than some of the other birds. I see them often dropping to the ground, out of the oak tree in the backyard grabbing what they want and flying back into the tree. I suppose it's what other birds do as well, the blue jays are just larger, and blue, easier to notice.

"One of the loudest and most colorful birds of eastern back yards and woodlots, the Blue Jay is unmistakable. Intelligent and adaptable, it may feed on almost anything, and it is quick to take advantage of bird feeders. Besides their raucous jay! jay! calls, Blue Jays make a variety of musical sounds, and they can do a remarkable imitation of the scream of a Red-shouldered Hawk. Not always conspicuous, they slip furtively through the trees when tending their own nest or going to rob the nest of another bird." -

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #BlueJay

This blue jay is facing left standing on the sloped corner of the roof of a wooden bird feeder. Its left side faces the camera, and its head is turned a tad away. Its black beak curves on the top and its eye is yellow. In this photo, its crest doesn't show, rather it lays back on the head like a toupee. There is a black mark that runs across the front of the eyes just above the beak and another that crosses the back of the neck and down the sides. The top of the head, neck, back, wings, and tail are mostly blue. The folded flight feathers are decorated with black and white markings. The folded long blue tail has thin black stripes across the tail at regular intervals. Its gray right foot sits high on the roof and the left below.

"Large, crested songbird with broad, rounded tail. Blue Jays are smaller than crows, larger than robins. White or light gray underneath, various shades of blue, black, and white above." -

We were trolling in our motorboat at Crombie Bay, #FrenchRiver #Ontario, Canada when I spotted this majestic Bald Eagle perched in the Pine tree. I am always thrilled to capture these powerful fierce birds of prey.

Red Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

I had thoughts and curiosities about the hole that this woodpecker is at, but then the top of the tree fell off and the hole was gone. It was in the late fall, one person told me that there was no way she way building a nest because it was too early. But both a male and a female were around the tree fairly regularly.

This is a female woodpecker clinging to the side of a large mostly dead oak tree. She is at an excavated hole it the tree that is just under a large limb that extends off to the left from the trunk. There are several instances of yellow fungus (mushrooms) growing from the tree. The woodpeckers black beak is parted and pointing toward the hole. Her right brown eys is visible. The red cap on the back of her head reached to her shoulders, her face and cheeks are mostly white. Her back and wings are the typical black and white feathers. Her front is a reddish blush color.

"Since 1970, the team reported in Science in 2019, the number of birds in North America has declined by nearly 3 billion: a 29 percent loss of abundance."
