Scatter!

Huh ... I thought I posted this hours ago. I forgot to click "Publish." Oh well, better late than never. Or is it late when I set my own loose schedule? ;)

There are usually several birds in my backyard in the morning. Titmice, chickadees, cardinals, doves, etc. This broad winged hawk (Buteo platypterus) flew over the yard this morning, it made a couple passes and there wasn't another bird in sight. The second this hawk was gone, it was party time again.

"Late Pleistocene fossils of Broad-winged Hawks, up to 400,000 years old, have been unearthed in Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Virginia, and Puerto Rico." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #BroadWingedHawk

This hawk is flying from bottom left to upper right against a light blue sky. The hawk's body is an elongated oval, like a long narrow football. Its dark beak is short with a pronounced hook on the end. Eyes are dark, I can't discern the color. Its head is covered in brown feathers. The wings are spread out as if gliding, the undersides are mostly light tan but there are patterns of dark brown that decorate the wings and body. The tips of the flight feathers are dark brown. The hawks' legs and feet are folded back against its tail with is slightly spread to maybe 10 of 15 degrees. The tail is decorated with light tan and dark brown stripes, the tip is dark brown.

"Broad-winged Hawks are small, compact raptors with chunky bodies and large heads. In flight, their broad wings come to a distinct point. The tail is short and square. Adult Broad-winged Hawks have reddish-brown heads, barred underparts, and broad black and white bands on the tail. The pale undersides of the wings are bordered in dark brown. Juveniles are lighter brown with coarse streaking on the underparts, particularly on the sides of the breast; the tail is narrowly banded. In the West, rare dark-morph adults are completely dark sooty brown with a banded tail." - allaboutbirds.org

We decided to start walking a bit earlier this time, due to not really seeing many birds out recently (perhaps because more and more people are outside) and we saw more of them than usual :-)

Woodpecker calling activity was unusually higher; it felt like we could hear them everywhere we went.

Some other highlights not included in the attached pictures are a male European bullfinch from far away that was cleaning itself, as well as a European green woodpecker that hung onto a tree long enough for me to take several (not so good) pictures. @mjohanning's pictures ended up being decent though, check them out! Funnily enough, we were talking about said birds before actually encountering them. Is this witchcraft...?

After having eluded me for months I was finally able to photograph a Green Woodpecker again! Always a delight to see them :-)

I believe this to be a male due to the red stripe below the eye.

Delightful and irrepressible, hummingbirds never fail to enchant as they dart about my garden like flying jewels, wings whirring as they buzz past. I'm successful in tempting them to nest nearby by placing multiple feeders around my yard, but I have yet to achieve the holy grail - getting them to eat from a handheld feeder.

Good morning, St. Louis.

Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are one of the more frequent visitors to our back yard. Indeed, there is a nest outside our front door. They are beautiful birds, nevertheless, I'm still a Dodgers fan.

"A perennial favorite among people, the Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven states." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #NorthernCardinal

This cardinal is perched in a loose thicket of small limbs. His body faces the camera and his head turns right revealing the right side. The bird's body, head, beak, and feet are a bright orangish red. His crest sticks up high on the top of his head like a shark fin. He has black eyes and a black mask that surrounds his red beak. His beak is open and there is something captured at its tip, I seed maybe.

"The Northern Cardinal is a fairly large, long-tailed songbird with a short, very thick bill and a prominent crest. Cardinals often sit with a hunched-over posture and with the tail pointed straight down. Male cardinals are brilliant red all over, with a reddish bill and black face immediately around the bill. Females are pale brown overall with warm reddish tinges in the wings, tail, and crest. They have the same black face and red-orange bill." - allaboutbirds.org

Hello Toronto

Well, I'm a Dodgers fan, but I know there are lots of blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) fans out there. The only baseball teams I can think of named after birds are the Blue Jays and the Orioles ... oh there are the Cardinals. I'll post a cardinal tomorrow.

"The Blue Jay frequently mimics the calls of hawks, especially the Red-shouldered Hawk. These calls may provide information to other jays that a hawk is around or may be used to deceive other species into believing a hawk is present." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #BlueJay

This blue jay is sitting on an oak tree branch looking left. There is and oak leaf to the left and out of focus trees behind. Its body i oriented slightly away and to the left.

The jay's blue crest is up and looks a bit the sail on a boat. Feathers around the eyes and under the black beak are light gray. There is a black mark just above the beak that extends to its black eye. Another black mark runs from the back of the head down its neck to the shoulders. Its back, wings, and tail are varying shades of blue, the flight and tail feather being a richer blue than the back. Its flight feathers are marked with black and white markings as if somebody decided to paint a design on to them - quite striking. The long tail, which is folded and narrow in this photo, has seven thin black stipes across the top and regular intervals ending in a black tip. The jays underbody is varying shades of light gray and white fine soft feathers ending a the birds knees which are close to the body; from there, gray legs reach to gray feet wrapped around the branch.

"Large, crested songbird with broad, rounded tail. Blue Jays are smaller than crows, larger than robins. White or light gray underneath, various shades of blue, black, and white above." - allaboutbirds.org

Autumn Baltimore Oriole. I painted this using alcohol inks, which I don't think get nearly enough credit in the art world. The medium is very difficult to control and fumes need to be managed. For me, these issues are offset by the vibrancy, sense of illumination and freshness that can be achieved.

Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea)

These birds came around early spring. They stayed for a couple weeks. Baltimore Orioles were also here, so it was a colorful time and the feeders.

"Indigo Buntings migrate at night, using the stars for guidance. Researchers demonstrated this process in the late 1960s by studying captive Indigo Buntings in a planetarium and then under the natural night sky. The birds possess an internal clock that enables them to continually adjust their angle of orientation to a star—even as that star moves through the night sky." - allaboutbirds.org

This bird perches on a small branch among other branches in a tree. His background is out of focus green forest.

The bunting faces front and to the left. He is blue all over; his short beak is black as is his eye there is a small black mark around his beak that extends to the eyes. The underside of his tail is gray as are his feet.

"Indigo Buntings are small (roughly sparrow-sized), stocky birds with short tails and short, thick, conical bills. In flight, the birds appear plump with short, rounded tails. A breeding male Indigo Bunting is blue all over, with slightly richer blue on his head and a shiny, silver-gray bill. Females are basically brown, with faint streaking on the breast, a whitish throat, and sometimes a touch of blue on the wings, tail, or rump. Immature males are patchy blue and brown." - allaboutbirds.org

I was playing a game and heard a lot of loud cawing outside that sounded a bit "off", i.e. not like the cawing of the regular crows.

Therefore, I decided to look outside and saw this rook perched on a cable right next to my window!

Its beak is probably slightly open because of the heat. If I remember correctly, this is how bird's try to dissipate heat (their form of "panting", I guess) since they cannot sweat.

Sitting in the backyard watching all the birds fly by 🎵🎶

People who were around in the 1960s might get the above jingle. This is a green heron (Butorides virescens). I don't recall ever seeing one before, I know I haven't photographed one until now. It isn't the greatest photo because it was way of to the west and starting to fly away from me by the time, I acquired the bird.

"From a distance, the Green Heron is a dark, stocky bird hunched on slender yellow legs at the water’s edge, often hidden behind a tangle of leaves. Seen up close, it is a striking bird with a velvet-green back, rich chestnut body, and a dark cap often raised into a short crest. These small herons crouch patiently to surprise fish with a snatch of their daggerlike bill. They sometimes lure in fish using small items such as twigs or insects as bait." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #GreenHeron

This heron is flying away from the camera to the left. Its left side is visible, and the left wing takes up a large portion of the center of the frame. Only the tip of the right wing is visible, the rest is hidden by the bird's body. The bird has a long pointed black bead and a large yellow eye. Its head and upper chest are brown, thought the area immediately under the beak is lighter. In the brown area of the chest, there is a white mark that runs the length of where the brown feathers are. The wings and the lower part of the body are a gray green. Its relatively short legs and feet are yellow and lay back against its short, almost nonexistent, tail.

"Compared with most herons, Green Herons are short and stocky, with relatively short legs and thick necks that are often drawn up against their bodies. They have broad, rounded wings and a long, daggerlike bill. They sometimes raise their crown feathers into a short crest. From a distance Green Herons look all dark. In better light they are deep green on the back with a rich chestnut breast and neck. The wings are dark gray. Juveniles are browner, with pale streaking on the neck and spots on the wings." - allaboutbirds.org

A view from below.

These cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) were among a bunch that would perch in this oak tree every afternoon this past winter.

"A treat to find in your binocular viewfield, the Cedar Waxwing is a silky, shiny collection of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, rakish black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on the wing feathers. In fall these birds gather by the hundreds to eat berries, filling the air with their high, thin, whistles. In summer you’re as likely to find them flitting about over rivers in pursuit of flying insects, where they show off dazzling aeronautics for a forest bird." - allaboutbirds.org

The wings are broad and pointed, like a starling’s. The tail is fairly short and square-tipped. Cedar Waxwings are pale brown on the head and chest fading to soft gray on the wings. The belly is pale yellow, and the tail is gray with a bright yellow tip. The face has a narrow black mask neatly outlined in white. Pleasent Surprise

This bird flew by yesterday. I thought it was a great egret. But after reviewing the photograph, discovered that it is a cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis). I've seen lots of these around, especially in pastures as we drive through the countryside. This is the first time I've photographed one.

"The short, thick-necked Cattle Egret spends most of its time in fields rather than streams. It forages at the feet of grazing cattle, head bobbing with each step, or rides on their backs to pick at ticks. This stocky white heron has yellow plumes on its head and neck during breeding season. Originally from Africa, it found its way to North America in 1953 and quickly spread across the continent. Elsewhere in the world, it forages alongside camels, ostriches, rhinos, and tortoises—as well as farmers’ tractors." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #CattleEgret

This egret is flying from lower left to upper right in the frame, the background is blue sky.

The egret's head is set close to the body with almost no neck. Though the front of the breast looks like a neckbone similar to long necked egrets exists, I'll need to research that. The yellow bill is shorter that the great egret's bill. The bird has bulging pale yellow eyes on each side of its head. To me, the eyes look like the button eyes of a doll. The white wings are spread in an "M" shape and are a bit translucent in the light, silhouettes of the wing's bones are visible. Like the rest of the bird the underbody is white, but its had a dark yellow patch of feathers in the center of its breast. The color yellow fades towards the back of the bird. Legs and feet angle straight back and are shrouded in shadow.

"Compared with other herons, Cattle Egrets are noticeably small and compact. They have relatively short legs and a short thick neck. The straight, daggerlike bill is shorter and thicker than other herons. They have medium-length, broad, rounded wings. Adult Cattle Egrets are all white with a yellow bill and legs. In breeding plumage they have golden plumes on their head, chest, and back. Juveniles have dark legs and bill." - allaboutbirds.org

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata)

These birds are around frequently, but they are a bit shyer than some of the other birds. I see them often dropping to the ground, out of the oak tree in the backyard grabbing what they want and flying back into the tree. I suppose it's what other birds do as well, the blue jays are just larger, and blue, easier to notice.

"One of the loudest and most colorful birds of eastern back yards and woodlots, the Blue Jay is unmistakable. Intelligent and adaptable, it may feed on almost anything, and it is quick to take advantage of bird feeders. Besides their raucous jay! jay! calls, Blue Jays make a variety of musical sounds, and they can do a remarkable imitation of the scream of a Red-shouldered Hawk. Not always conspicuous, they slip furtively through the trees when tending their own nest or going to rob the nest of another bird." - https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/blue-jay

This blue jay is facing left standing on the sloped corner of the roof of a wooden bird feeder. Its left side faces the camera, and its head is turned a tad away. There is a black mark that runs across the front of the eyes just above the beak and another that crosses the back of the neck and down the sides. The top of the head, neck, back, wings, and tail are mostly blue. The folded flight feathers are decorated with black and white markings. The folded long blue tail has thin black stripes across the tail at regular intervals. Its gray right foot sits high on the roof and the left below.

She is at an excavated hole it the tree that is just under a large limb that extends off to the left from the trunk. There are several instances of yellow fungus (mushrooms) growing from the tree. The woodpeckers black beak is parted and pointing toward the hole. Her right brown eys is visible. The red cap on the back of her head reached to her shoulders, her face and cheeks are mostly white. Her back and wings are the typical black and white feathers. Her front is a reddish blush color.

Surveying the realm.

Northern Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) are very protective of their territory. Here is one at op a small pine tree looking over land, probably hunting.

"Look for Northern Mockingbirds sitting high on tall shrubs, poles, or utility lines. Around your yard, you can also look for them running or hopping along your mowed lawn. You may be able to first identify the presence of a Northern Mockingbird by listening for its song which usually mimics numerous other birds at once." - allaboutbirds.org

This mockingbird sits atop the new growth of a small pine tree. The new growth looks rather like corn cobbs or wheat. The bird is facing right, and its head is cocked slightly downward. It has a medium length black beak that is curved on top and flat on the bottom. Its brown right eye is encased in shadow, but if zoomed in close enough the color is visible. The bird's feathers are mostly light brown, some might call it a gray brown; its wings and flight feathers are just a little darker. Its long grayish tail is cocked slightly upward in relation to its body. Silhouetted legs and feet hang on the to tree.

"A medium-sized songbird, a bit slenderer than a thrush and with a longer tail. Mockingbirds have small heads, a long, thin bill with a hint of a downward curve, and long legs. Their wings are short, rounded, and broad, making the tail seem particularly long in flight. Mockingbirds are overall gray-brown, paler on the breast and belly, with two white wing bars on each wing. A white patch in each wing is often visible on perched birds, and in flight these become large white flashes. The white outer tail feathers are also flashy in flight." - allaboutbirds.org

The three local swan chicks.

The other day, annoyingly having left my camera at home, I saw one riding on the back of its parent, but the other two were nowhere to be seen – until the parent shook its wings and they all fell out!

An Egyptian gosling from a few weeks back – it's much bigger now, but I'm so slow to edit my way through the shots I've been taking this spring. More soon!

Not my favourite photo, but one of my favourite birds — the Great Spotted Woodpecker!

This is a male one as can be seen by the red patch at the back of his head. Females' heads are completely black.

They have a very cute "kik" type of call.
