Been catching up on a few days of news, and seeing a lot of people refer to the second #FullMoon of August as a blue supermoon. This is not what a #BlueMoon is.

A blue moon is NOT the second full moon in a month. A blue moon is the third full moon in a season that contains four full moons. If, as per the standard definition, northern Summer/southern Winter consists of June, July, and August, then the blue moon was the first full moon last August.

Absolutely incredible moonrise for the blue moon/supermoon combo tonight. I went out to Cape Saunders on the Otago Peninsula and boy was I glad I did! Here's a picture taken at 6:08:49 when technically the moon was at very low altitude (much less than a degree) and WOW OH WOW look at the refraction effects as the moon rises over the Ocean. #bluemoon #supermoon #moon #astronomy #refraction #NewZealand

The original plan was to do a composite of the city & the Moon. Normally, to make a single frame of a rising full Moon you shoot it the night before the full Moon because on the night of, the Moon rises after sunset & it's too bright. But, tonight there was a lot of smoke. So the dynamic range wasn't extreme & I was able to shoot both the Moon & the city in one frame. And bc of the smoke, I had to color correct the Moon & saturate the colors of the lights. Kind of a meh, shot.

I've found something else I'm no good at photographing: the moon.

The 1st image shows some details of the moon. Everything else is underexposed and utterly dark.

It’s just gone 1:30am, designated time for #SuperMoon #BlueMoon and I’ve got up to see it.

Interestingly it’s gone from ‘traditional’ view of the moon (around 10pm) to a very very bright light in the sky! iPhone can’t cope with it, wish I had a better camera.
