Last night's movie was Blade Runner ("More human than human, that is our motto"). God, that movie is so visually incredible. I see so many things that came after it in watching it. Had any films prior to that had that kind of look before? It's quintessential cyberpunk before anyone knew the term.

Theres something kinda wrong with #Hollywood when I feel like applauding #AngelStudios for putting all of its shows out on #BluRay, but it’s rare for a studio to do this.
Even #CBS / #Paramount, who is known rn for being the best at doing physical releases, usually just does #DVD releases, not #BluRay (although for their #StarTrek shows they’ve been making steelbooks, good on them for that!)

The slow death of physical media for movies is horrible for consumers -- unfortunately most consumers don't care because streaming is so convenient. We need to fight for physical media so that we can own movies.
After watching both the theatrical cut and the 'Ulysses Cut' of Waterworld again, I gotta say, the extended version with those extra 40 minutes really amps up the world-building. The 'Ulysses Cut' adds so much more depth to the story, and Dennis Hopper's role as the one-eyed bad guy is absolutely amazing. The whole journey is just so captivating, and the extended narrative makes it even more awesome.

I don’t think anyone sincerely thinks Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is a good #film, let alone a “masterpiece,” but if you make a “must-have” blu-ray edition with three commentary tracks, a bunch of interviews and making-of featurettes, and an attractive cover, its reputation will improve by a thousand percent and people will want to own it. I feel like that’s the whole boutique #bluray business model, and it works on films that are far worse. I’m tempted too.

Ah. Now I remember why I switched from #Amazon to #eBay initially.
Two weeks ago, I ordered 24 S08 on #BluRay, but they sent me the #DVD instead. The following week I ordered #SoundOfFreedom on #BluRay. Big mistake. It got delayed twice before “arriving”, the package being completely empty and having never been sealed.
I think if I have one more problem with #Amazon I’m switching to #eBay again and never looking back.
Trying to find a *good* Software that can play (ecrypted) Blurays on Windows. Software, that *doesn't* look sketchy.
It's impossible... Yes, VLC can play Blurays, but not encrypted ones. Yes, there are ways, but still.. doesn't really work. Also last time I had some bad stutters..
I have an external bluray disk reader! That's not the issue! The issue is the software...

A Canterbury Tale (Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell, 1973). Not to be confused with a similarly titled Pasolini film, this Powell and Pressburger effort is the most romantically British of British wartime films. With it's wheat fields and cathedrals it presents a vision of Dear Blighty straight out the world of a Sir John Betjemen poem. Glorious. Yet sadly unavailable on Blu-ray.

I think it is important to _own_ media. I find myself picking up lots of films on #DVD, because I will own them. I can rip them and I can watch them over and over for free, my own way. Importantly, a huge number of shows will simply disappear as a result of the streaming marketplace. They will live and be enjoyed by people while the steaming service lives. But then the #streaming service will die and no one will have a practical method to make money from the show, so its rights will get sold to someone who sits on them, and then they'll get archived in some digital vault somewhere inaccessible to fans and lost to the world.
I just bought my first blu-ray drive and #bluray disc (boy, do I sound behind the times) and I discovered that #Handbrake can't #rip those like it can rip DVDs. So while I "own" it, I can't work with it like I do all my DVDs. I sure as heck can't archive it and insulate it against the relentless tide of business models that try to take away my rights.
We hasten the loss of these shows as we all pivot to streaming. The more we move to a pay-per-view model, the more we move to a model where media is lost unless it is constantly rented and viewed.
There's stuff that simply isn't getting released on disc at all. Any #Netflix original, Amazon Prime Video original, etc. will NEVER be released physically because that grants access to the content without a subscription. It directly undermines the streaming service's value proposition. I am sad.
