Times Up! is always a blast with my group. We like to extend it a little more with the forth round normally, this time either we use only one hand to show the word, or with one pose (no moving allowed) last night we played with the second.
It is always fun.

#boardgames night tonight saw another long round of Argent: The Consortium, this time at 4 instead of 3. It's very much an L99 every-idea-ever-in-the-box game. I won by doing my usual mix of chasing supporters and influence first, and then using marks to figure out which direction I should hedge for colors.

It feels increasingly like the hidden voters mechanic isn't really adding anything; for the sake of competition, it'd be better just to have them all face-up. low-7's / 10

New board games I played this week:

7 Wonders Architect - Build your wonder and try to get the most points. Taking resources from the different decks was interesting, but led to many stalemates when unwanted cards came up.

Deadwood 1876 - Try to have the most gold and win the final showdown. A little too random and chaotic for my tastes. Stealing from each other blindly felt very aimless.

#VividMemories was a rather nice new appearance at #BoardGames night. One of my friend’s #UKGamesExpo acquisitions.

You draft the fragments and try to arrange them to match patterns on the memory tiles and make paths across the board. It’s a very thinky puzzle. My accidental strategy of not managing to score very much until the last round paid off.

Really nice artwork! The theme of childhood memories makes for some lovely images.

Nice board game components. Tactile little coloured plastic tiles with symbols to help distinguish the colours. Chunky cardboard components.

I had the chance to play #TwilightImperium again on Saturday. I was playing as The Nekro Virus, a robotic faction that can't research technologies, instead copying them when you destroy an enemy ship in combat. I'm fairly conflict-averse in games like this, which should run against this faction's strengths, but knowing that fighting me makes me stronger worked as a deterrent, too. Unfortunately, while I did get 10 points, I wasn't the first one to 10. Fun game, though! #BoardGame #BoardGames

Undaunted: Normandy
One of the highlights of #UKGamesExpo was being taught Undaunted by @Simpike.
If you played Up Front or Advanced Squad Leader in the 80s then Undaunted might seem weak, but I really enjoyed it. If you have played Memoir '44 then it's not so different but a little more complex and deeper.
My only reservation is that Scenario 2 was a fixed, solvable puzzle. It's a minor reservation as there are tons of scenarios and campaigns so there is plenty of replay value.

Just got in a quick round of Wayfarers of the South Tigris online. I got crushed 98 to 61 but it was a first game and, well, I feel like I might have done better in a physical space. The narrowness of the viewport, compounded by having to sit on the "short edge" of the table, made it harder to appreciate the breadth of my options quickly.

Still, not bad. Mostly a bunch of tableau management and typical Euro racing and blocking. 7.1/10

Supposed to be an entry-level 18xx, but it still took over 3 hours with 3 players and I got murdered by regular 18xx players. I also knew I had lost at the 90 minute mark.

Just arrived 2040 An American Insurgency #boardgame published by #compassgames
It’s a 2-player CDG with rebels v. the federals in the future USA. The two scenarios have the rebels as the rural mid-west & south or as the coastal urban populace. Red cards are rebels, blue for federals. Familiarity with CDGs or Twilight Struggle #boardgames would make the players feel comfortable.
It’s interesting the designer has taken a generic rebels v government political position. That’s probably wise.

Kanagawa is another beautiful game that we hardly ever play. It's fine with two, but the drafting mechanism would undoubtedly be most fun with four. It's very luck-based, mitigated somewhat by being allowed to know the backs, and thus categories, of the lesson cards that will be coming out.

Another round of Dominant Species: Marine at #boardgames night, this time placing 3/4 while the leader rode the same vent scoring engine I used last game. RNG conspired to kick the shit out of one particular player, who's kind of getting turned off by it. I learned afterward that there's a minor rule we've been playing wrong but I don't think it would have mattered.

Also, learned Skymines, technically new game 31/100 but also it's mostly a reskin of Mombasa (2015) without the colonalism. 7.2/10

In the background, half-cylinders mark the construction of habitats by various companies on the moon; the yellow company appears to have a dominating position, while the blue company hasn't left home yet. I'd love to play my card game, Peeve Wars, with a friend across the country while live streaming.

Is there a way to somehow do that?

For example, I thought of having my husband make two identically ordered decks, and then I could mail the other player one, and we could use our duplicate decks to play together (with some "promise not to look" activity), but then I realized you usually have to shuffle the discard pile and my scheme fell apart!

Been mulling over an idea for a while but trapped myself into building a browser based version thinking I could rapidly prototype and got stuck in the mud rewriting the game engine over and over to try different game rules.

Now I've drawn the game board on a side from cardboard box, hand-drawn some game tiles, and nabbed some pieces from Risk. We've learnt so much more in just an hour or so of playing through several variations than I did from a few days of CSS and JavaScript.

#BoardGames

The game board is a 10 by 10 grid of squares drawn on a large piece of cardboard. Smaller pieces of card are used as tiles placed onto the grid and are marked with instructions to be followed when landed on. One playing piece is four rows from the start, while another is only on the second row. There is a small pile of card tiles facing down next to the board. A player's hand is moving to pick up the game dice to begin their turn.

I played the Bloodborne card/board game for the first time last weekend. It's good, with a lot more emergent complexity that you'd expect.

And most importantly it captures the feeling of playing Bloodborne really well, that tension of maybe losing all your accumulated points if you die but maaaaybe you can still manage to beat the next monster before the other players do and secure that sweet loot.

It's a nice mix of cooperation and competition. You clear a dungeon of monsters together but ultimately you need to get the edge on your fellow Hunters to win. And you can absolutely lie to them.

Jaipur could perhaps be thought of as a stepping stone to Splendor. It's quick to set up and an entire game will take less than 30 minutes. The swap-to-make-sets game play is super simple. But probably too simple? My dad could handle it, but there are plenty of other two-players that @peterdrake and I would choose before this one. If the cards weren't so beautiful, and the box so small, I don't know if it would have survived our occasional cullings.

I’ve solved Andy Hopwood’s board game Mijnlieff: with perfect play, it’s a win for the second player. See https://iamkate.com/games/mijnlieff/ for more details, or https://github.com/KateRoseMorley/mijnlieff-solver for the code.

Solving Mijnlieff was one of my motivations for learning Rust, as my initial JavaScript attempt would have taken many days to run (based on running a partial analysis). The Rust version takes under a minute to analyse just over a billion games on my 2022 MacBook Air.

Got my first 3D printer with an automated color system, so I started adapting my Dynamod Dungeon Tiles models to take advantage of it. These doors are not painted but printed in place with three different filament colors!

@Sheril Right - and there's a nice article about Magie, by game designer David Parlett, in the Board Game Studies journal: Parlett, David. "Lizzie Magie: America’s First Lady of Games" Board Game Studies Journal, vol.13, no.1, 2019, pp.99-109. https://doi.org/10.2478/bgs-2019-0005
