The most chronically online #bookish take I’ve seen recently is that you shouldn’t give a #book a bad review or DNF it publically because those actions hurt authors’ feelings

I’m surprised that this sentiment gained as much traction as it did, seems like common sense that reviews and DNF shelves are for the #readers not the #authors

This #quote is a perfect example of why I love revisiting old #book highlights daily, when I read this originally I wasn’t yet aware of the concept of #CarDependency

#Cars are like #SocialMedia. In theory they should make us more connected, but in practice they isolate us from our communities

If you don’t already, I highly recommend revisiting old #highlights / #annotations with fresh eyes :)

The reason most Amish are prohibited from owning cars, for example, but are allowed to drive in motor vehicles driven by other people, has to do with the impact of owning an automobile on the social fabric of the community. As Kelly explains: “When cars first appeared at the turn of the last century, the Amish noticed that drivers would leave the community to go picnicking or sightseeing in other towns, instead of visiting family or the sick on Sundays, or patronizing local shops on Saturday.”

I’ve found that among fellow #readers it’s a common experiences to have a few #books on the shelf that you just can’t get into no matter how much you may want to

For me, these are:

Dune
Snowcrash
Wheel of Time (1-14)

I’ve heard such great things about all three, but ever time I start one it’s like wading through molasses

Back before I learned when to DNF a book, I would force myself to read to the end just in case it got good in the last 20%

As an example, I’ve always regretted pushing myself to finish the Six of Crows / Crooked Kingdom duology by Leigh Bardugo

I felt that, because I’d spent Audible credits on them, it would be a waste not to. In the end, they weren’t worth the hours of nonstop cringing
