Deep inside a forest in Oregon’s Willamette Valley stands a dead “Tree of Life.” Its foliage, normally soft and green, is tough and brown or missing altogether. Nonetheless, the tree’s reddish bark, swooping branches and thick, conical base identify it as the Pacific Northwest’s iconic western red cedar.

excellent, excellent lecture: "Slaving Science: Natural Historical Collecting and the British Slave Trade" by Dr. Kate Murphy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM4qUleVO84

context: biological specimens of plants, insects, birds, skeletons, etc., were crucial to early western science. those early scientists were on an encyclopedic mission (wanting to know about all kinds of stuff from all over the world) & very few people got to travel, so receiving a specimen of, like, an ostrich egg from very far away could be a huge deal for an early scientist in england.

these specimens were often pulled together into collections owned by wealthy collectors, and many of these private collections formed the starting collections of large national institutions that are for-the-most-part still around, and still educating millions of people...like the british museum.

in fact, if you ever went to a museum of natural history & saw biological specimens, you've been a part of this history (in a small way).

herbaria were important places for the development of early *botanical* knowledge. i've actually been to an herbarium! at duke university, of all places. it was a wonderful place that smelled like tea, where thousands of dried plant samples were pressed between pages of huge books.

anyway, back when western scientists were developing taxonomies & basic understandings of plant biology (like the various parts of plants & their functions), herbaria were really important.

yea, it might suck to try & understand what's going on with a flattened, dried, little patch of some grass, but at least you could look at the actual *plant* & not just a drawing.

also, herbaria still provide value in botany because you can take small samples & do genetic analysis, or whatever other kind of analysis you want. the fact that they're historic specimens means that a scientist can do historic analysis as well. so these old samples are not just relics.

how these samples ended up in western herbaria is a very interesting question. there's a colonial romantic image of a "plant hunter" on a "collecting expedition". he's (it's almost always a 'he') single-minded, dedicated, unafraid, adventurous, and *doing it for science*. it has its appeal! that's why i call it the colonial romantic - it has a romance about it, but there's a nerdy purity too. i mean, it's indiana jones, right?

but that's not how it really happened (surprise!). if you know much about how things (and people) from around the world ended up in england (and its colonies, like america), you know that it was basically always a total nightmare.

these colonials were engaged in a project of moving people, plants, animals, and specimens all around the world, like pieces on a chess board.

so, a slave ship might be carrying enslaved people, but it might also be carrying live plant specimens, live animal specimens, seeds, nuts, dried plants, fossils, butterflies, & all kinds of other stuff.

and that's what this talk is about: how, exactly early science was related to the slave-trading industry of england, specifically.

on a personal note, i live in hawai'i, a place where you can see *literally in what grows on the land and in what people are here* the effects of that colonial project of moving around people, plants, and animals. so if i ever start to wonder "hey, how did tree x end up on the island?" maybe it was brought as part of a plantation project. and if you meet a third generation japanese or filipino person on the island, their grandparents might have been brought over as workers for a plantation, part of that exact same colonial project. so all of us are still very much living in the world created by this global colonial project of places like england, spain, portugal, etc.

every time i look into how colonial powers moved plants around, i see that that movement was intimately tied to the goals and material reality of slavery, colonialism, and imperialism.

it's a hard history to look at, but it is real.

Carex fraseriana, Fraser's Sedge. This really neat plant will have gorgeous puffy white blooms in the spring, but when we stumbled upon them - in an area one would perhaps expect to find American Hartstongue Fern, it was slightly confusing until a closer examination. It is endangered in some states, and tends to be uncommon, except where it likes to grow (cool, moist, rocky) and is left alone, then it covers the ground.

It was the only species in the genus Cymophyllus until it was re-transfered over to Carex; this little plant confuses many with what it is. Nature doesn't fit in boxes, and sometimes I dislike our desire to.

Shown is just a detail of its beautifully symmetric rounded canopy composed of carob's compound pinnate leaves. It's to the south of the house it's in front of so it provides evergreen shade to this old one-story house from the 1920s or 1930s, which was built for a colder climate than the one we have now.

Botanical Society of America (BSA) did a survey of members' social media use. There were only 246 responses (out of how many thousands?) and based on that they've put all their oomph into BlueSky.

Not just starting an account there but pooling invite codes to help people join BS. Disappointing. @plantscience #Botany #PlantScience

Highland sun orchid (Thelymitra alpina), Namadgi NP, ACT. Out fairly early this year - this species can usually be seen flowering well in Dec. but most plants had finished here by mid-Nov.

A lot of variations in the sun orchids at this location - with several other very similar T. nuda complex species (and possibly some hybrids) recorded here. The post anther lobes on this plant are a little less compressed than more typical forms growing nearby but still has the forward-pointing horn-like teeth on the apical margin often found on T. alpina.

Copper beard orchid (Calochilus campestris) variations at Genoa (left) and Mallacoota (right). Both forms were growing on roadside verges and wide open on a coolish, cloudy day.

Many plants at Mallacoota are very similar to the Genoa form with impressive 'moustaches' while the plants with longer/bushier beards probably have the best 'eyes' and most aggressive/annoyed facial expressions ;)

Dipodium punctatum (purple hyacinth orchid) at Corunna, NSW. This is usually the least common of the 3 x local Dipodium spp. and often the last to flower. Out pretty early here in mid-Nov - last year I didn't see them until early Jan! First Dipodium I've seen out so far this although plenty of flowering stems up despite the very dry conditions.

Thelymitra atronitida (black-hooded sun orchid) with an unusual deeply notched post anther lobe near Mallacoota, VIC. Have seen similar forms described as possible hybrids (or peloric) but not sure if this is the same - or just a variation of the typical form.

Ziziphus jujuba (Jujube) harvest. Sadly, there's a lot more fruit on the ground going to waste. The fruit can be delicious both fresh and dried.

#FruitToot #Botany #DavisCA

Zig-zag branches of jujube, with sharp thorns here and there. Many golfball-sized brown fruits are still hanging amongs the yellow-green leaves. The leaves will fall off in another week or three.

California has tons of imported species so we do get something of an autumn display here. This is Pistacia chinensis. #Botany #Autumn #DavisCA

Pinnately compound leaves with lanceolate leaflets. The leaves are getting ready to fall off so the leaflets here have shades of burgundy-red, orange-red, and yellow over green. There are racemes of small round red and green fruits.

Interesting pinker form of Thelymitra atronitida (black-hooded sun orchid) near Genoa, VIC. The column collar is also slightly lighter/browner than the black 'hood' on the more typical blue-flowering forms. Just two plants at this location - one pink and one blue.

Carob trees bloom around the same time this year's pod crop is harvesting. This is one of Davis' carobs that's in bloom right now. Carobs are mostly dioecious ("two houses" from Greek), which means that some trees have male flowers and some have female flowers. A small % of trees have perfect flowers - meaning both male and female reproductive parts.

The flowers in the photo are not fully open yet.

View into the branches on an overcast but brightly lit day. Compound leaves with slightly glossy elliptical leaflets emerge from branches. Also emerging directly from branches are reddish racemes of flowers that are not yet fully formed.

Oldest raceme on my carob (which is supposedly 'Santa Fe'). Not sure I'm going to get successful self-pollination. While Oct and Nov have so far been on the warm side, I'm still not seeing enough pollinators in this semi-industrial area I live in.

Fingers crossed I get some pods! I'd feel better if it had an earlier season, as some other carobs do. #Flowers #Carob #CeratoniaSiliqua #Botany

10x magnification through a loupe of a carob raceme. Large depth of field so only some parts are in focus. In the center is a pistil that seems to be turning from white to green. If that's the correct perception, it may have been successfully pollinated and the pistil will enlarge into an unripe carob pod. Around it are stamens of various age. Some are withered and dark, some are yellow but darkening around the edges. Some are fat and reddish-gold.

One of the things I was able to do on the birdsite that there just isn't much opportunity to here is find out "current events" in carob by doing a search every week or so.

If you ever see a carob toot, please forward it to me, especially if it's not a tired carob hippie joke, but actual research or market or real life info re Ceratonia siliqua/#Carob

Please boost to get my request out there. Thanks so much! @plantscience

Progress photo of the oldest #Carob flower raceme on my tree. It's hermaphrodite when most carobs have either male or female flowers. Technically, this can self-pollinate, but it'll be interesting seeing if it will do it under the current conditions.

Some stamens are already past their prime. Some are fully ripe, others still on the way. Same with the pistils. If you look closely, you can see the seam on the pistil that would show up in the ripe fruit as well. @plantscience
