It's kind of funny to see some brands struggle on Mastodon. It's clearly a low priority for some of these companies.

They forget to post, and then decide to make up for it by vomiting out their content in a long unbroken stream, doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing.

When I see a wall of brand posts in my feed, my first instinct is to mute and/or block.

If you are posting on behalf of your company, see @verge and @arstechnica how to do it right.

A #TradeMark is part of a company's assets. A lot of effort and money is invested in creating such #Brands and associating good things with product or service a brand represents

As #Twitter falters, #brands shouldn't overlook #threads as a viable alternative.

It's a safer space with a predictable meta-run governance layer where brands can experiment risk-free for now. Brands can easily cross-promote from #Instagram while engagement is low.

If(when) Twitter declines further, Threads could become the prime short-form, brand-safe platform, especially with its eventual #fediverse integration. Thoughts?

tbh even #brands should love the fediverse because it solves a KILLER problem with self/professional promo:

If you automate posting to multiple sites, saves you some work. But if you never ~engage~ with a site's users directly, they'll usually leave.

By being able to reply to comments from other servers and even other protocols that integrate #activitypub, that problem's gone.

You don't even need to crosspost. Imagine following FB users on Twitter. ...now imagine 2 less bad sites, there u go

A four panel comic entitled "the life of a meme." Panel one: a group of small blue people surround one small blue person who has a pineapple on their head. The group is smiling and clapping. Panel two: a crowd of blue people are taking wearing pineapples on their heads, taking selfies, and wearing t-shirts with pineapples on them, smiling and having a nice time. Panel three: a group of blue people with pineapples on their heads surround a large red character labelled "brand" who also has a pineapple on their head. The blue people look suspicious, annoyed, and sad. Panel four: Three large red characters, each labelled "brand," stand by each other smiling with pineapples on their heads. They are surrounded by pineapples on the floor as many small blue people walk away with annoyed expressions, tossing their pineapples to the ground. Artist credit: @alexkrokus

@UncleGooberleg Yeah. I figured as much, but I'm curious about #brands that handle such issues. In the past, the #SocialMedia platform just died altogether or specialized such that brands stopped using it. I think those platforms prayed that a given brand might come back and hence did not delete accounts. #Twitter is now being actively antagonistic to its users, so now I feel the need to be defensive.

Honestly, Threads is exactly the thing that almost all people want out of a social app: A place to #Engage #with #Brands and post replies to quasi-celebrities. Not for me, but I’m happy for them.

I’m looking forward to when they federate so I can follow a few people I actually know and the handful of shitposters that I still miss from Twitter.

No matter how you feel about Threads federating, I think we can all agree that it’s absolutely hilarious how mad Elon Musk must be right now.

‘Trends have lost all meaning’ /

Brands’ fascination with social-media fads has devalued the rigorous practice of trend forecasting. Brands should remember some simple laws of physics to get back on track.

Trends once meant meaningful social change: an emerging and defining collective thought, behaviour, value, or attitude. A shift in society.

I want to see what a view looks like where it's companies posting here. I'll need to give it a few days to fill up but it'll be interesting to see what the posts cover, and if the "brands" boost posts from people.

New from @taylorlorenz: An analysis by the Center for Countering Digital Hate estimates that the reinstatement of 10 previously-banned high profile Twitter accounts is producing enough engagement on the platform to generate $19 million in annual advertising revenue.

They found numerous advertisements from major brands appearing alongside controversial tweets from these extremist influencers.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/02/09/twitter-ads-revenue-suspended-account/

#Twitter #Advertising #Brands #CCDH #Hate #Extremism #Moderation #ContentModeration #Tech #News #WaPost #WashingtonPost #TaylorLorenz

Screenshot of text from article:

The CCDH uncovered multiple examples of advertisements from major national brands, including Amazon, Apple TV, the NFL and Fiverr, that appeared next to content from the 10 extremist influencers. In one instance, an ad for Wendy’s appeared next to a tweet by Stew Peters, an anti-vaccine influencer with 168,000 followers, where he referred to the vaccine as a “BioWeapon” and claimed people have been “murdered” by it.

In another example, an ad for the streaming service Peacock appeared next to a tweet from Anthime Gionet, an influencer known as Baked Alaska, who was recently sentenced for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. The ad appeared next to a tweet where Gionet asked his followers whether he should “say the n-word.”

Brand advertisements also appeared next to tweets about election fraud, vaccine conspiracy theories, false statements about Ukraine and bio weapons, and tweets denigrating women in business, CCDH said.

I don’t think I really grasped what it would be like having a feed completely empty of #ads. I really like that it’s just people posting about things that matter to them. I don’t even know if I can remember the last time social media felt like that.

I do, but mostly for #BeerAdvocate.

Personally, I basically retweet for BA, but I'm finding that #Twitter is becoming increasingly less useful. Same with #Facebook and #Instagram. Engagement is down, followers continue to drop, and prompts to boost ($$$) are up.

And I don't like the idea of #beer (or any) #brands broadcasting on #Mastodon (as very few will ever engage), so I'm currently not considering it for BA.

I'll revisit in the new year.

Q as a (former) marketer: What will happen when #brands inevitably flock to @Mastodon?

They will have a:

1. Broadcast Mindset
They post #marketing bafflegab, get no traction, realize they can't buy eyeballs, wonder what all this (waves arms) is good for, and leave.

2. Learning Mindset
They engage conversationally with people with needs they're trying to meet. They use this input for development and growth. They view this input as solid gold.

Your thoughts?
