#DYK British Summer Time was introduced to save on lighting costs? William Willett campaigned for the change after noticing that people were sleeping through daylight early in the morning, then lighting candles at night. Changing the time in summer made better use of daylight hours.

I mean, if you want to maximise daylight during working hours, you could just do business from 8 to 4 or from 10 to 6 for part of the year, instead of 9 to 5
But no, let's change the actual clock and throw people's sleep cycles* completely out of whack for a month, and let's not bother reckoning up the lost 'productivity' that brings with it, let alone the adverse health effects

Well the clocks have gone forward in the uk curtesy of William Willet (great-great-grandfather of Coldplay singer Chris Martin) who wanted longer golf games - thus substantiating my dislike of golf and my vague distrust of Coldplay.
All the clocks that were wrong in my house are now right, and all those that were right are now wrong. 😃
As it's summer time (at least on the clocks) here's a summer tune, even though it's still chilly.

Another irritation about #BST for me as a luddite #amateurRadio person is that #hamradio works internationally in #utc - which is generally not a problem.
Because I insist on keeping an old school paper logbook I have to remember to add - or is it subtract - an hour from whatever time the real world is using.

Mind you, it could be worse. Apparently in Lebanon the Prime Minister made a last-minute decree on Thursday that the clocks wouldn't go forward today. Except that half the country has ignored him, and everyone's computers and mobile phones have changed anyway.
My smartwatch was the only device which didn't change to BST automagically last night.
Working on the day we change the clocks is NOT fun!!

Standing on the prime meridian at Greenwich, thinking how utterly stupid it is to keep switching between GMT and BST each year.
I don't seem to be missing my one hour less of sleep.
That's good I suppose.
It's interesting that this one hour forward thing is known as BS time.
Does anyone know why we do it? It's supposedly because of farming or something but I don't see why farmers need darker mornings.
Part of me thinks it's all about making it darker earlier in the evening so people go to bed earlier so they will get up in time for their #capitalist servitude. The same reason pubs started closing at 11pm.
well the first dawn of British summer time has been .. and yes you guessed it .. its raining cats and dogs and Russian tank turrets ..spring is here and its still asleep ..

Good morning, by the way (or afternoon, night, evening wherever you are). The best thing about the weekend is that the clocks change here. Can we just leave it alone and stop doing this now? It's archaic.
Apparently when I was very small the UK trialed remaining on British Standard Time (GMT+1) for 3 years but eventually a free vote decided against keeping it in place.

Today is the last day of #BritishSummerTime or #BST for this year and the clocks will go back to #SolarTime or #GMT tomorrow. I always find this transition rather grim as suddenly as it’s suddenly getting dark in mid afternoon. But really, there shouldn’t be any need for #DST at all. We should keep solar time all year around and then the transition would be more gradual and bearable and we would still have the possibility of getting up when it’s light rather than before #sunrise.
Once again, it’s the palaver of putting clocks forward by an hour. A complete waste of time.
