Our hotel near the Arenal volcano has the most amazing gardens, full of wildlife. I got up at 5:30 am to take photos before breakfast.
Here are some of the birds and butterflies from this garden (one of them is neither a bird nor a butterfly; I'll let you find it).

Witnessed waves of butterflies flitting through the farm yesterday, ~50 over 2 acres at any given moment.

Tried to capture on camera but they were riding the winds downhill and my skills were no match to their ungraceful (but safe from predators) flight.

They were light yellow/white. I've seen them before in much greater numbers and managed to photograph then. #iNaturalist community says it's the Common Albatross.

Earlier this spring I purchased a milkweed plant for the front #garden and it’s done well, though to my knowledge it had so far failed to attract any Monarch #butterflies. But yesterday was the day, a single Monarch appeared. Then this morning I read that due to habitat destruction and other causes the overwintering population in Mexico was down by 22% this year, so there will be far fewer of them migrating through here, a real tragedy.

Among the threats to the Monarch butterfly are invasive Swallow-worts. These vines are close enough cousins to Milkweeds that #butterflies lay eggs on them. Unfortunately, the caterpillars can't eat them.
Researchers are hoping to use a moth, Hypena opulenta, that can only eat swallow-worts as biological control.

On 7/13, Marianna Szucs from Michigan State University will describe the efforts to establish this moth.

Swarm of zebra swallowtails 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

Eurytides marcellus

#InsektenSamstag #insects #nature #wildlife #butterflies #hiking

A cluster of zebra swallowtails laps up minerals on a gravel path. Most of them are in profile and are fluttering their wings slightly. The outer edges of the wings are black. When the wings are raised, the stripes are horizontal/parallel to the ground. The wings have a red and blue eyelets at the base of the wings. When the wings are closed it looks like red and blue dots. They appear more like eyes when the wings are open. The butterfly in the foreground is flapping it’s wings more rapidly.

First baby monarch caterpillars of the season! 🥰

A close up of a milkweed plant and two tiny monarch butterfly caterpillars. The milkweed plant is a total spike of thin velvety green leaves, and a dense inflorescence at the top. The inflorescence here has not opened and they are just green buds.

There are two very small caterpillars nibbling on the leaves. One is on a leaf at the top adjacent to the inflorescence and you can see it’s black soft bulbous antennae. The other caterpillar is on a leaf further down and it’s head is nibbling over the end of a leaf. The caterpillars are so tiny you can barely distinguish the yellow and white stripes between the black stripes. Very cute.

Let #dandelions grow. #Bees, #beetles and #birds need them

May, 2015

"As I write, thousands of hectares of such #wildflower habitat are being destroyed under the blades of our #lawn mowers, and the bees, pollen #beetles butterflies and #moths are going hungry. As a weed, it’s one of the most unpopular of the bunch: dandelion tap roots are notoriously hard to dig out, the plants have an almost unrivalled knack of propagating themselves, including in walls and cracks in paving where nothing else would live, and – to add insult to injury – they are often the first flower we see in spring and the last in autumn. The dandelion is bold and brash and unrelenting. But that is why it is brilliant. It’s virtually everywhere and nearly always in flower; it’s the #pollinator’s best friend.

"#Bumblebees, solitary bees and #honeybees all visit dandelions for food, along with hoverflies, beetles, and #butterflies such as the peacock and holly blue. #Goldfinches and house #sparrows eat the seed. Yet most of us gardeners miss out on the spectacle of watching wildlife feast on our dandelions, because we wage such a war against them as weeds."

Thank you @alexwild for an incredible tour today of the UT Austin Entomology department! We got to see a whole room chock full of cave invertebrates, some incredible biomimicry specimens, a real ant parasitized by fungus 🤯, and the world's largest species of insect. If you're in #austin please consider trading volunteer hours for one of these epic shirts 😅 #entomology #texas #bugs #insects #beetles #butterflies #nature

Example of mimicry in butterflies: the top two butterflies seem identical, and the bottom two seem identical, but actually the very top and very bottom species are the same, and the two middle butterflies are the same species.
A bullet and killed by ophiocordyceps, with a tiny mushroom fruiting body emerging from it's head
Alex holds up a "Texas longhorns" shirt with a longhorn beetle instead of a cows head as the logo. Butterfly specimens in the foreground
A specimen box of beetles including one that is almost the size of a human hand

Here's a book a lot of people here might like, I think, so please boost.

Paraphrased:

'A children’s author and poet who'd become a keen amateur photographer became obsessed by the idea of photographing all 58 native butterfly species in Britain, and he travelled all over the country to do just that.'

i wouldn't say this is my most exciting picture in the world, no cute birds or anything, but i really like it as a desktop wallpaper. i mean its what my current wallpaper is lol. i put it up on ko-fi as a pay-what-you-want download. it's yours to have for whatever price you want! i'm currently unemployed so would love to make a little money from my photographs but only if you have the means, you downloading it at all would mean a lot to me

It rained overnight last night, and one of the Monarch Butterfly cocoons on an Acer held onto the raindrops.

These cocoons are such amazing constructions...

Closeup of a bright green cocoon covered in raindrops hanging from a red stem of a maple tree. Where the cocoon is attached there's a pitch black substance that surrounds the join. The bottom of the cocoon is out of focus
Closeup of the same cocoon seen side on. This time it's all in focus, with the water drops standing out all over it. The red stem of the maple bends down slightly toward the ground, as if the cocoon were weighing it down.

A Common Mormon (Papilio polytes) spotted outside the Wallace Education Centre at Dairy Farm Nature Park, Singapore, on 8 Feb 2023. It was so busy feeding (puddling) and keeping still that I could take my time getting this low angle profile shot of it.

The Common Mormon is a common butterfly but is usually in motion, so this was an opportunity to get nice shots.

A medium sized butterfly that is mostly black, with a series of white stripes near the edge, and small colourful spots on the edge of the hindwing. It is keeping still while feeding from wet soil with its proboscis.

For those of us in cold winter mode, here's a little pick me up! One of the most beautiful butterflies is the Eastern (Canadian) #TigerSwallowtail or Papilio glaucus. The male flaunts yellow and black stripes like that of a tiger, is very large and colorful and has a wingspan of 3 - 5 inches.
