The smoke is likely from the fires in Strathcona park to the west northwest at the end of the lake. The sky is dimly lit orange with a bright point of orange light on the horizon just above the mountain range. The sky is rippled light yellow and orange cloud and smoke.

The bow of the canoe is to the right. The sun is to the left still a point of orange light now reflected in the calm water. There are dark trees around the edge of the lake.

No canoe. Just a smoke whispy sky with the sun an orange spot. The lake is almost a perfect reflection of the sky and trees and mountain ridge line.

If you started out early with digital cameras, you've learned to shoot at the lowest ISO possible to avoid ugly digital grain. Cameras kept getting better, grain less of a problem. This was the first time I pushed my D4 and shot this at 16,000 ISO. The amazing thing about high ISOs is that they see a scene in a way our eyes don't. I did not see the dog, did not know the canoe was lime green, it was too dark when they paddled by.

The CY22 Recreational Boat Accident Database was released today by the US Coast Guard. The statistics are always sad for canoe and kayak deaths. In most cases, the people weren't wearing life jackets.

I haven't done a deep dive or analysis in several years because it's always the same story. Maybe it is time to try to reach people again.

I'll be looking over the database soon and will report out any new trends in canoe and kayak accidents. I suspect it'll be life vests.
