There’s this notion that a business’s management owes ultimate loyalty to shareholders. Interestingly not customers. But a #business that has shareholders and no #customers will not last (or return value to shareholders). But a business with customers can do just fine without #shareholders. It’s like #capitalism requires this strange inverted loyalty scheme that harms a business, not helps.

Governments making people think #climatechange is the only threat only helps #capitalism to wreak more havoc. People are persuaded to think they could keep their economic #prosperity, just by doing everything "green." This is a lie. Sc #GreenEnergy alone would need way too much raw materials than the earth could give us; and their extraction means more #ChemicalPollution than we already have. Now add all other material goods people are not willing to give up.

Greta Thunberg (@gretathunberg), sounding a bit cynical...

"Every once in a while, our leaders make a few pledges and set a variety of vague, non-binding, often distant targets. Then, as soon as they have failed to reach them, they immediately set some new ones. And on it goes.

"It may seem absurd, but it most definitely works — if your aim is to maintain business as usual, economic growth, and high popularity ratings.

"Since the level of public interest in and awareness of these failed climate and biodiversity pledges is close to non-existent, and since the media long for positive news as part of their policy of both-sides reporting — It can't be all gloom and doom! — the overall message that is conveyed, if any, is that action is being taken. It may not always go all that well, but hey, they are actually trying really hard and there definitely has been a lot of progress made — so stop being so negative all the time!"

The #American model of #capitalism (free-markets & corporate welfare), doesn't look much like #China's (state capitalism, controlled markets), but in #healthcare there are now similar problems.

China's state #health system is based on a contributory model (albeit maintained by the state), and in the face of the #costofliving crisis in China & escalating prices/costs, people are opting out, leaving them uncovered & having to save for a health disaster - with a major effect on 'effective demand'!

India has lifted 135 million people out of poverty in the past five years and remains the world’s “fastest-growing” major economy, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the country’s parliament on Thursday.

In 2022, around 15% of the Indian population was living in poverty, compared to 24.8% in 2015-16.

If the Finance Ministers assessment is correct then this is great achievement by India, well done! Good progress that I hope India manage to continue on developing. Of course, better does not mean better for everyone at the same time but the improvement is a much needed and valuable for its people.

(Sidenote - Just a shame that our Western capitalism haters can't rejoice in this development.)

The bad news: It’s owned by a private company that will charge $2.2M for a course of treatment.

Pharmaceutical research should be publicly-funded, and its results should go directly into public domain, where private providers can compete on price for manufacture and distribution. For a fraction of the money we spend on missiles and remote military bases, we can save so many lives instead.

The software engineering behind #callofduty is the most stupid thing I've ever experienced, you can't make that shit up. 😂

I own MW2 and decided to play it once again. But I can not play it until I download a 30GB Update for MW3, which I don't even have and don't intend to buy at all.

All because they made MW3 the launcher for any call of duty. You can't open #MW2 without opening MW3 first. So you are forced to install MW3 and all its updates (i.e. battle pass bs) just for it to function as the most bloated launcher you could ever imagine.

Even funnier, if you are playing Warzone and want to switch over to MW2 Multiplayer, you have to switch from Warzone to MW3, and then from there, launch MW2.

Imagine being the engineers having to implement this bullshit.

I choose to believe that this all is just so that some execs at #Activision can show cool powerpoint slides with high download and launch counts for their latest game. A clear example that #capitalism breeds #innovation and maximizes #efficiency or some shit like that.

Also, I know, it's call of duty, we all have our vices. 🙄

Our Mastodon friend Steve Genco (@sjgenco) offers some excellent ideas on how we might move *forward* into a better world. ...
____________________

Here are the assumptions to start from. If you don’t agree, there is no point in reading any further. You are not operating in the same universe of evidence and facts that I am.

⚠️ It’s going to get hotter, at least 2.0°C above preindustrial temps, possibly 3.0°C or more.
⚠️ The weather is going to get more unpredictable and extreme.
⚠️ Natural disasters are going to arrive at greater and greater frequency.
⚠️ Economic inequality (income and wealth) is going to get worse.
⚠️ We will continue depleting the natural world.
⚠️ The effects of climate change will be unevenly distributed around the planet.
⚠️ Fossil fuels will become financially and energetically unprofitable, ending our temporary Age of Oil sometime in the middle of this century.

What our leaders’ current vision of the future does not include — indeed, what it loudly denies — is the reality of over-consumption and overshoot in the wealthy Global North. In other words, the dominant mental model that rules our imaginations today denies that our rapacious capitalist appropriation of the planet’s natural resources is unsustainable. It denies that overshoot is real, and that it can only end in resource depletion, product and food shortages, out-of-control inflation, rationing, and eventually, a total collapse of our carbon-powered consumption and waste-driven world economy.

Clearly, a vision/mental model that denies the reality of the damage it inflicts on our planet can provide no viable first steps for how to move beyond the pain it produces. Indeed, it denies that any such steps are necessary. Instead, it offers Business As Usual with some tinkering around the edges — a few EVs here, a wind farm there, “green growth”, and promises to clean it all up with magical carbon capture technologies sometime later in the century.

Most politicians operating in the Global North today could never embrace an alternative to economic growth. Even the most passionate climate-focused politicians, like Jay Inslee, Governor of Washington State, are still wedded to the idea that any pro-environmental policies must allow for — indeed, stimulate — the continuation of economic growth.

This is a fundamental assumption underlying the “Green New Deal” concept promoted by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others. It also underlies every other “Green Growth” initiative. “Growth” is even in the name.
____________________

That's just a short excerpt from Part 1, the first of two long articles laying out Steve's proposals. I'll provide excerpts from Part 2 in my next post (https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/111545515488399652).

I really hope you will take the time to read and think about what Steve is suggesting. Those of us who can see that our modern industrial society is in danger of collapse are often criticized for not offering any solutions. That's not true, of course. We have many important and constructive ideas. Let's spread the word.

Society (government) organizes everything. Property, resources, money, everything. A government might decide some people are allowed more, or exclusive, use of property, but that's a decision by the govt, not some kind of law passed on from God.

U.S. corporate media is happy to sing this song:

🎶 "Keep driving, keep flying, keep shopping, keep buying!
We've got this, everything's fine." 🎶
______________________

The CEO of Exxon, Darren Woods, celebrates the potential of carbon capture to dramatically reduce global emissions. Saudi Aramco says in its podcast that the fossil fuel industry is innovating new climate solutions. BP’s podcast proclaims more of the same.

These sound like examples pulled from the public-relations departments of the fossil fuel industry — but they were produced and promoted by Bloomberg, Reuters, and The New York Times, respectively. Over decades, these media companies built trust with readers; now they are wrapping their hard-won credibility around fossil fuel companies, confusing readers and protecting corporate interests.

Many of the world’s most trusted English-language news publications help fossil fuel companies mislead readers about topics like the promise of carbon capture, the potential of “renewable biogas,” and how much the industry contributes to the energy transition.

Now with the UN climate talks in the United Arab Emirates, oil and gas companies are sponsoring even more advertorials, newsletters, and events with media partners than usual, and they are primarily designed to portray the industry as the gatekeeper to climate solutions.

Big Oil, the U.S. government, and other petrostates like the UAE, want you to believe there is an easy solution to global warming, that capitalist technology can wave a magic wand and make all our problems go away. But it's a lie.
__________________________

In the crescendo of hype and greenwashing coming our way from COP28, we’re hearing a lot about industrial carbon capture technologies that attempt to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The world’s largest oil companies, along with host country the United Arab Emirates and even programs in the U.S. Department of Energy, are working hard to push this stuff.

Don’t be fooled. It’s mostly a distraction from what we really need to do right now: phase out fossil fuels and deploy more effective climate solutions. Counting on these technologies today is a bad idea.

First, industrial carbon capture projects are far too small to matter. Even after decades of investment, research, and development, today’s largest carbon capture projects only remove a few seconds’ worth of our yearly greenhouse gas emissions. The plan the U.S. Department of Energy is supporting will only be able to capture one million metric tons of CO2 every year, while last year the world emitted 40.5 *billion* tons.

Second, they are far too expensive, costing thousands of dollars for every ton of CO2 removed. Other climate solutions, including improving energy efficiency, deploying renewable energy sources and addressing emissions in agriculture and industrial sectors, are far more cost-effective.

Third, these industrial carbon removal techniques also consume excessive amounts of energy, which present enormous challenges to scalability. If we power carbon capture projects with CO2-spewing fossil fuels, the projects lose much of their proposed climate benefit, and powering them with renewable or nuclear energy sources would provide far less climate benefit than using that energy to directly displace fossil fuels.

More fundamentally, the biggest problem with industrial carbon capture schemes is that they are largely a ploy by Big Oil to delay action in phasing out fossil fuels.

These projects give fossil fuel companies a greenwashing boost, cloaking pollution underneath fake environmental responsibility, helping them claim that they are taking serious climate action, all the while continuing to build out additional fossil fuel infrastructure and rake in trillions in profits.

Carbon capture isn’t a serious climate solution.

The super-rich are killing us. Not just figuratively, but literally.
________________________

Climate change is overwhelmingly a problem of wealthy people. The wealthiest 1% of humanity produce over 1,000 times the emissions of the poorest 1%. In fact, these 77 million people are responsible for more climate-changing emissions than the poorest 66% (5 billion people) of humanity.

Since 1990, the personal emissions of the world’s wealthiest have exploded. They are now 77 times larger than the level that would be compatible with a 1.5°C warming limit.

Who are these super-polluters? The richest 1% are billionaires, millionaires and people earning over US$140,000 (£110,000). The threshold to join the rarefied club of the top 10% is US$41,000 (£32,000), including most of the middle class in wealthier countries.

But the super-rich are responsible for climate change well beyond consumption-based emissions. The super-rich, by and large, run major companies, direct investments and shape national and international laws. They have an oversized and controlling impact on our media and public opinion, including through advertising and ownership of media outlets. And they directly shape policy through lobbying and paid-for influence.

While their money and power make them overwhelmingly responsible for climate change, they are also insulated from the worst impacts. They are less affected by increased food prices and climate disasters, can afford insurance and to move from one place to another, and have greater resources to draw on in times of crisis.

It is the poorest – those least responsible for climate changing emissions – who suffer the most. They suffer higher losses, live in the most impacted regions, and have little to no access to savings, public support or welfare when crisis strikes. They are also least able to exercise their rights as they are the least powerful and less well represented politically.

It would take approximately 1,500 years for someone in the bottom 99% to produce as much carbon as a single billionaire does in a year.

The choice is very simple. Either we can have a livable biosphere or we can have billionaires. But we can't have both.

If we are to have any hope of preserving some form of modern human civilization beyond the next few decades, we *must* quickly and decisively reduce our fossil fuel emissions.

But that is not happening. And if we stay on our present course, it will never happen.

Sure, you can celebrate the rapid growth of renewable energy — but remember, what we are seeing now is "Green Growth," controlled by capitalists for their benefit and NOT for the good of our environment.

Check this out...
______________________

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that global energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions will increase through 2050. Global population growth, increased regional manufacturing, and higher living standards will push growth in energy consumption beyond advances in energy efficiency, according to EIA’s projections in its International Energy Outlook 2023.

EIA projects that global energy-related CO2 emissions will increase through 2050 in most of the cases modeled. Although EIA expects zero-carbon technology — renewables and nuclear — will meet the bulk of new energy demand through 2050, that growth is not sufficient to decrease global energy-related CO2 emissions in most cases under current laws and regulations, according to EIA’s projections.

Shame, shame, shame on the organizers of #COP28...
____________________________

At least 2,456 fossil fuel lobbyists have been granted access to the COP28 summit in Dubai, signalling an unprecedented presence at crucial climate talks from representatives of some of the world’s biggest polluters, according to a new analysis from the Kick Big Polluters Out (KBPO) coalition.

Alexia Leclercq of Start:Empowerment says, “Do you really think Shell or Chevron or ExxonMobil are sending lobbyists to passively observe these talks? To advance climate solutions for the benefit of communities whose air and water they pollute? To put people and the planet over profit and their greedy dollars? Big Polluters’ poisonous presence has bogged us down for years, keeping us from advancing the pathways needed to keep fossil fuels in the ground. They are the reason COP28 is clouded in a fog of climate denial, not climate reality.”

In a year when global temperatures and greenhouse gas emissions shattered records, there has been an explosion of fossil fuel lobbyists heading to UN talks, with nearly four times more than were granted access last year.

“2023 was a year like no other. Record temperatures, record levels of emissions, and now we see a record attendance from Big Polluters at UN climate talks. The window to preserve a liveable planet is rapidly closing. At the same time, ever greater numbers of Big Polluters are allowed to roam around this summit,” said Muhammed Lamin Saidykhan of Climate Action Network International.

The capitalist corporate media will be full of greenwashed good news about all the progress being made at COP28. Remember, they have a vested interest in supporting the status quo and continuing with Business As Usual for as long as possible.

So when you hear glowing reports about $427 million in pledges being made from various nations to the UN's "loss and damage fund," bear in mind that this amount is FAR from what is actually required.

Back in 2020, leading nations all agreed to jointly contribute $100 billion to assist in this effort. But that never happened.

According to the Adaptation Finance Gap Update report, these rich nations *should* now be spending at least $215 billion to $387 billion per year to help developing countries adapt to climate change.

$387 BILLION. Not $427 million.

If you do the math, that's about one-tenth of one percent of what is needed. Such generosity. 🙄

As for the United States? My country, the strongest and wealthiest in the world, has pledged $17.5 million, or about 0.002% of its defense budget. 😡

Hey, #Fediverse / #Mastodon

Is this the future of social media? It certainly is better than Silicon Valley/commercial-surveillance disinformation platforms by orders of magnitude, yes...

...but personally, I have a different view.

I recommend reading the "Public Service Internet" manifesto. It was a privilege to read it. This is one of my greater research interests as well.

https://www.uwestminsterpress.co.uk/site/books/e/10.16997/book60/

Tl;dr: an internet infrastructure of the people, by the people, and for the people — including democratic *governance*, user representation (suffrage), and citizen co-ownership of resources. NOT government-owned.

Of course there are some bits I disagree with too.

One could argue Mastodon/Fediverse is like that... but not truly (I like the place though). Here's why →

I’m proud to live in the USICEAR:

🇺🇸 The United States of Increasing Carbon Emissions and Avoiding Responsibility 🇺🇸
__________________

As the world convenes in the United Arab Emirates for the next round of the endless climate slog, much attention will be paid to the pledges of individual nations to cut their emissions. This has been the basic scorecard of climate talks almost since the start. But it’s a wildly incomplete scorecard, in ways that are becoming ever clearer as we enter the endgame of the energy transition. We’ve been measuring it wrong.

That’s because a country’s *exports* of fossil fuel don’t count against its total. But it’s those exports that are driving fossil fuel expansion around the world, coming as they do from some of the most diplomatically powerful and wealthy nations on Earth.

To give the most obvious, and largest, example: the United States is, fitfully, cutting back on its carbon emissions; its envoys will be able to report, honestly, that the Inflation Reduction Act should soon actually be trimming our domestic use of oil, gas, and coal, as we subsidize heat pumps and build out EV charging networks.

But at the very same moment, U.S. production of fossil fuels is booming. That means, of course, that much of that supply is headed overseas.

And the numbers are truly staggering. If the liquefied natural gas (LNG) buildout continues as planned, for instance, by 2030 U.S. LNG exports will be responsible for more greenhouse gases than every house, car, and factory in the European Union. The emissions, under the U.N. accounting system, will show up on the scorecards of the EU and the dozens of mostly Asian nations that will buy the gas. But if you could see them in the atmosphere, they would be red, white, and blue.

Is the United States leading the effort to slow climate change? Nope.
_____________________________

As world leaders convene at COP28 in Dubai this week, the US is undermining efforts to set stringent standards for a new global carbon market that would allow polluters to help fund carbon-reduction efforts to compensate for their emissions.

According to an executive working group in the Council of the European Union, the US is backing a largely unregulated voluntary system of trading emission offsets, even though such voluntary schemes have been plagued by questionable climate benefits, harms to indigenous communities, and outright corruption.

Experts say the US is going this route, rather than backing a more stringent UN-regulated carbon market favored by the EU and other stakeholders, because the Biden administration is hoping private-sector climate solutions and corporate responsibility will help gloss over the fact that the country is continuing to break records for fossil fuel production, and is the biggest laggard in terms of paying its fair share of finance for the emissions it has wrought on the world.

Climate emergency? Bah!

🛢️ What we need is more carbon emissions, more industry, more jet planes and more SUVs — along with much more money for the richest among us. 💵
____________________________

Electricity generation in China and India, and oil and gas production in the US, have produced the biggest increases in global greenhouse gas emissions since 2015, when the Paris climate agreement was signed, new data has shown.

Emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, have also risen, despite more than 100 countries signing up to a pledge to reduce the gas, according to data published by the Climate Trace project. Coal mines from China were responsible for a large proportion of the increase in methane emissions between 2021 and 2022.

The data shows that countries and companies are failing to report their emissions accurately, despite obligations to do so under the Paris agreement.

Emissions from aviation have bounced back strongly since the Covid lockdowns: carbon from international flights rose by 74% between 2021 and 2022, and from domestic flights by 18% over the same period. Road transport emissions also increased by 3.5% – probably a result of the rise in SUV sales.

How much can you trust the US to be an actual leader in aggressively phasing out fossil fuels and quickly reducing global carbon emissions? Is the United States part of the solution or part of the problem?

John Kerry, former US Senator and former Secretary of State, now serves as President Joe Biden’s climate envoy. In that capacity, Kerry has strongly defended the appointment of United Arab Emirates oil chief Sultan Al Jaber to preside over the COP28 climate summit. (See https://www.politico.com/news/2023/11/30/john-kerry-sultan-al-jaber-cop28-00123610)

And how is that working out? Not so well…
__________________________

The president of COP28, Sultan Al Jaber, has claimed there is “no science” indicating that a phase-out of fossil fuels is needed to restrict global heating to 1.5C. He said a phase-out of fossil fuels would not allow sustainable development “unless you want to take the world back into caves.”

Al Jaber also said, “I accepted to come to this meeting to have a sober and mature conversation. I’m not in any way signing up to any discussion that is alarmist. There is no science out there or no scenario out there that says that the phase-out of fossil fuel is what’s going to achieve 1.5C.”

Dr Friederike Otto, of Imperial College London, UK, said, “The science of climate change has been clear for decades: we need to stop burning fossil fuels. A failure to phase out fossil fuels at COP28 will put several millions more vulnerable people in the firing line of climate change. This would be a terrible legacy for COP28.”

Al Jaber’s comments were “incredibly concerning” and “verging on climate denial,” scientists responded. UN secretary general António Guterres said, “The science is clear. The 1.5C limit is only possible if we ultimately stop burning all fossil fuels. Not reduce, not abate. Phase out, with a clear timeframe.”
__________________________

The US government supports Al Jaber because the Biden administration is eager to move ahead with even more oil drilling and much more shipping of fossil fuels all around the world. Why? Because it’s good for business! It will make billions in profits for the CEOs and the Wall Street financiers who actually run our country. 💵 🇺🇸 💵

I ask you, what could go wrong?
_______________________________

Alongside highly publicized attendees like King Charles III and Bill Gates, here are a few of the fossil fuel lobbyists at COP28 who purport to be helping save the world from climate change:

🛢️ A team of 18 people from ExxonMobil, which lied about climate change for decades, including chairman and CEO Darren Woods, who said this month that climate solutions “have been too focused on reducing supply.”

🛢️ A team of 14 people from Shell, including CEO Wael Sawan, who said this summer that the world still "desperately needs oil and gas.” The team also includes chief climate change adviser David Hone, who has notoriously bragged that Shell’s influence at previous COPs was responsible for changing the 2015 Paris Agreement to include carbon credits as a legitimate emissions reduction strategy.

🛢️ A team of 12 people from TotalEnergies, including chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné, who said this summer that “our society requires oil and gas.”

🛢️ A team of seven from Chevron, whose CEO Mike Wirth recently said that building a new energy system without oil and gas companies is “just not a realistic way to see things.”

🛢️ A team of 18 people from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), not including CEO Sultan Al Jaber, who is also the president of COP28.

🛢️ A whopping 112 people from the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), a group founded by polluters like Exxon and Chevron, which has been given at least 2769 passes to attend the climate talks since 2003.

🛢️ A team of four people from the American Petroleum Institute, the oil and gas industry’s most powerful lobbying group, which has spent over $127 million on lobbying since 1998.
