#CaptureOne has been a slow start, trying to wrap my head around working with layers and masking. There’s no AI masking as of yet, apparently it’s coming soon. Anyone going in thinking they’ll just continue where they left off in Lightroom will hit a wall, so don’t do it if you’re on a deadline.
For the last couple of days I’ve been testing #CaptureOne, hoping to replace #Adobe completely. Why? I’m sure anyone who’s ever worked with #Lightroom professionally knows why. I have some high end production jobs I need to do, and LR went completely bonkers, on a powerful machine built for jobs such as this, mind you.
#captureone is such frustrating software. Not because it's bad but because you constantly have to pay for "major" updates that really should've been minor updates. Especially for the price. It's also really glitchy for the price.
I think I'm just going to move my whole workflow to #affinityphoto instead. I need the stability and the UX is better.

Adobe is out here running an ad showing off how you can use their #AI autofill to make your friends believe you have fake cats in your apartment. It’s maybe harmless, but it seems like a wildly bad idea to advertise to people how their powerful AI tools can be used in deceitful/subversive ways — even if just “for the meme. Every time I feel like I’m missing out on something by not using Lightroom, #adobe manages to do something unsightly — I’ll stick with #captureone !

I have the feeling that #CaptureOne performances degrade over time. I’m not sure if this is planned obsolescence or some other weird interaction but I’m not happy with it, so I started testing #Lightroom again. I’m impressed by some of the cataloging functionality and its powerful masking, yet some other editing functionality is not as advanced as C1, for example colouring is leagues ahead in C1. Eventually, you can get to the same results with either, but I think I’ll stick with C1 for now…
On the trail in some beautiful light yesterday. So nice to see everything green now. Starting to get too hot for me though. I’m much more inclined to hike in the spring or fall.

A bit surprised and disappointed that the Capture One Pro 23 (trial version) I’m using makes my Apple ProRAW shots a lot worse. It looks OK in Apple Photos but C1 somewhat makes the edges very soft making the images unusable.
Has anyone experienced this? Is this just due to the trial version I’m using?

I went out with the Fujifilm X-T4 for a planned 3.5 or so mile hike (ended up being 7 miles because of “Hmm I wonder where that thing that almost looks like a trail goes?”)

I went out for a hike with the D850 and 20mm f/2.8 D lens this morning. I went on some more of the more rocky scramble trails this time around and just tried to find any angles that caught my eye.
I have the feeling that having "computer knowledge" has becoming super exotic again, like in the 90s and before. And I have the feeling that this hurts the reputation of more and more pro software applications that were designed to be used only by pros and then got into the mainstream because of ... capitalism.
I see this in support forums, many people really don't get software, the use case and where problems derive from. Then they blame the application.
I notice this, especially when anything GPU compute is involved, that people have problems which are mostly come from user error which are based on some very true fundamentals no one seems to know any more. Like there is a limit on GPU memory or that there is also a cache which sometimes needs to get purged. Then people are religious that their Macs work different and this PC stuff doesn't apply to their beloved tool. This is also fuelled by all these review idiots on YT telling your M1 can do everything has unlimited resources and when slowing down you won't notice, and it works totally different with resources - this is somehow glued to the brains.
People really don't get GPU stuff that there are limits and that 12122212 browser tabs have an impact on performance.

I completed my migration to #darktable this weekend. I’ve been running it in parallel with #CaptureOnePro for about a month. #CaptureOne recently made unfriendly changes to their perpetual listening model that further incentivizes their subscription.
The writing is on the wall, so I spent some time evaluating #darktable. It's a fantastic #opensource program that I could spend all day recommending. It prepares me for the bigger migration… dumping #Apple for #Linux.

Between the two I liked DxO PhotoLab the most, but it doesn’t know how to edit images from the latest iPhone models, nor can it edit HDR merges (DNG files) created by Lightroom.
