My heart. #FTD, and other forms of #dementia, are so cruel, "merciless," to quote from this devastating article. May I therefore propose to observe this day in global solidarity with all #caregivers who have to contend with #dementia patients in their daily lives and also with all researchers still working diligently to expand science's understanding of this disease so as to find better treatment and diagnostic tools for all. #Dementia care & the societal challenges of #aging communities are our contemporary conundrum. It is sad that #caregivers (both amateurs & professionals) are not afforded sufficient resources nor support. 1 in 10 Japanese are now in their 80's or older - so will many other countries be aging.
Thru more sharing, surely, better sociopolitical frameworks & policies supporting empathetic #agedcare & resources for the associated caregivers ought to become top #election issues?

I've definitely moved into the #guilt phase of #grief this weekend.

As in "it's so wrong that she's now in assisted living and I get to continue with my life".

I know I'll get through it. But it's lousy.

My partner moved into the memory care/assisted living place today (from rehab).

Fully expecting the first period may be rough but hopefully it's a good environment for her.

I have to resist trying to be over there all the time.

This should have been more obvious to me, but finally sinking in that I need to move to a new role in her life.

I'm no longer the hands-on caregiver. I need to learn to trust others to take good care of her day-to-day.

It's hard.

I was invited by a local county judge to present my caregiver perspective at a regular monthly meeting of the Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice Advisory Committee of Travis County, Texas. The group's goal is reducing the entanglement of persons with mental illness in the criminal justice system. My wife joined me in presenting, yesterday, and we both thought it went great! We spoke about our personal experiences as parents and caregivers for an adult living with schizophrenia and shared data from author Seth Stoughton, the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), and the CAHOOTS program in support of improving the response to those in crisis. The committee members were engaged and we received enthusiastic applause at the end of our presentation. I hope we made a lasting difference. Our five wrap-up suggestions:

1. Reduce the contact persons with serious mental illness have with the justice system:
a. Certified Peer Support Specialists could be hired to conduct frequent telehealth wellness checks and paid a stipend by the minute for the time they spend on their cell phones with clients.
b. Caregivers could benefit from de-escalation training and access to help from outside the justice system, perhaps from a network of family and friends who undergo training to become Certified Family Peer Specialists.

2. Pledge that first-responders will acquire skills for an unarmed response to those without a gun. A mutual “no guns” agreement would require that no gun is available to a person with serious mental illness for there to be a private response. This would increase the safety of all stakeholders. Such a program is one that caregivers could get excited about.

3. Minimize coercion by making hospitality a leading feature of the diversion center. Make it a “living room” where persons want to go for help. Make it a place all stakeholders will encourage persons with mental illnesses to go for help. We don’t want any stakeholders to discourage use of the diversion center.

4. For those who hesitate to accept treatment, offer financial incentives for psychotic and homeless persons to try a long-acting injectable antipsychotic, like the incentives offered to blood plasma donors and in clinical trials of new medications—if they are competent to reject treatment, they are competent to accept treatment with an incentive.

5. Don’t forget the <1% with unstable psychotic disorders who have lost reality contact and are homeless. Unless they are already known to be non-responders to prior treatment, consider a brief involuntary commitment at a facility separate from the diversion center and with the approval of collaborating judges and physicians. Develop new ways to improve the lives of treatment non-responders.

"No support was offered, no treatment plan, no signposting, no leaflets. Texas has remained second-to-last in funding in for our most needy citizens since that metric has been tracked.

Wages for community-based caregivers for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities remain pegged at $10.60/hour, below the starting pay for most fast food workers. It was just the case of a married couple that felt sexual disconnection, like so many out there...

Instead, Sari van Anders and friends from #QueensUniversity turned it in an amazing paper targeting the root causes that frame the role of women in our society as oppressed household laborers and #caregivers.

(just a few out-of-context inputs on neoliberism for my taste, but a must read for every #feminist interested in creating new political discourse)

It's a very difficult & too-often overlooked topic: care for the sustainability of #caregivers. The multiple issues, of familial, emotional, societal, rational, & economic nature, often intermingle & are unique for every family/individual. However tt is not an excuse for government & society not to lend their support. Researchers project #dementia & #alzheimers to continue rising as most countries continue their #ageing trajectories.

@constantorbit woukd like to read it but a paywall. Is there a gift link? What I’m wondering is: do families with one or more members who have #ChronicIllness or #Disability or #Caregivers have more of these life changes that average? It always seems like we run into far more and faster episodes.

What can make the conditions for #caregivers better? Alva Rodriguez says, "$25 per hour can't solve everything. But it would make this job, one of the toughest and worst-paying you will find, a little bit better."

CMS To Publicly Release All Ownership Info Of Home Health and Hospice Agencies

This is good news for transparency. As a homebound disabled person, I often leave a terrible company for another terrible company only to learn they are owned by the same terrible people.

Sometimes a shotty service closes down and another pops up.

I should note, my issues aren't with the end providers like #nurses, aides, etc. They are victims, too.

@calimari Not a scientist but very interested in the important research work you're doing. If you have the time and don't mind answering a question... Is there a method for sanitizing medicine bottles so pharmacies can reuse them? A #caregivers group I belong to has been having a conversation about how this type of plastic can be reused or eliminated and what kind of public awareness campaign we might be able to create in a push for change. My Google search came up with nothing useful.

Someone posted this "inspiration" in an online #caregivers support group and I'm giving it a big old NOPE.

If you're a #caregiver, I encourage you to **not** give your all. Please, be selfish. Find a way to put yourself first some times. An engine cannot run on empty. Making yourself a martyr is only going to get yourself in your own grave faster than you expect.

Seriously, reserve some of your energy to take care of yourself. You are worth it.

Foolish "wisdom" meme that reads: “To be a caregiver is to give all you have for the one you love. It takes a special person to step into this role.”

I’ve been thinking, for a while, about #caregivers.

I struggle with a lot of things in daily life due to being #disabled with #MEcfs. Some things, I think a #caregiver could help with; some things, not so much. Helping me clean my apartment would be a big help, for example.

I’m in the process of a #DisabilityBenefits claim in the US. Does anyone know whether that - if I get approved - would come along with the option for a caregiver from the government or something?
