#OTD in 1775 this amazingly detailed #map of #NewYork was published. It can be seen in its full glory at the #ClementsLibrary and you can read more about it in my blog at

The title panel from the map read, "A Map of the Province of New York with part of Pennsylvania and New England from an actual survey by Captain Montresor, Engineer, 1775
Close up image of a section of the map showing New York City and the lower Hudson River with beautifully-detailed elevations showing the mountains.
Another closeup detail of the map showing Long Island sound, and the coast of Connecticut, then known as the 'Devil's Belt' for its unpredictable winds and tides.
Another closeup detail of the map, this one showing the Mohawk River Valley, a hotly-contested area during the Revolution.

New article alert, and it's even published fully open access thanks to a nifty agreement our library has with the publisher.

I do a deep dive into the earliest comprehensive European survey of the land around timtumili minanya – the Derwent River in lutruwita (Tasmania). This map was deeply influential on the shape the southern colony would take, but it was never (as far as I have been able to tell) copied in full or taken beyond the island. It is a curiosity, but more than that, it is a reminder of the importance of the most innocuous-looking documents.

3a. For the first visualization:
- Apply a graduated symbology or "data-defined" symbology using the pop_sum field.

3b. For the second visualization:
- Use geometry generators and the "scale" expression with pop_sum and max(pop_sum) to create the bar/column graph.

The data used are a population raster (30 second/1km grid) from WorldPop and Philippine admin boundary map from GADM.

The first map visualizes the population per 30 second of latitude (or longitude) using color while the second visualizes the population as a bar/column chart.

The process was once again fairly straightforward.

Totally mind blowing!

The Chatham House Resource Trade Database (CHRTD) is a repository of bilateral trade in natural resources between more than 200 countries and territories.
The database includes the monetary values and masses of trade in over 1,350 different types of natural resources and resource products.

In the middle, a bar graph showing the top 5 trade flows (Brazil to China, US to China, Mexico to US, Netherlands to Germany and Canada to US); On th right, a list of the fastest growing trade relations.

Made a little map today. Haven't done one for a while and it was a lot of fun. Made almost entirely in #Inkscape though I did take it into #Gimp at the end to add a texture layer.

There's no story behind the map, it was just for the fun of it. Drawing is not my forte, ahem, but I love making maps in Inkscape where I can tweak to my heart's content.

Just realised that I forgot to add a compass. And a scale. Oh well, bit late now. 🤷‍♀️

- Made a population layer (based on 2020 Census) composed of provinces and NCR cities/municipality.

- Used QGIS' "Order by expression" algorithm to sort the layer features based on their centroid latitude (x(centroid($geometry)).

- Made a script that would divide the sorted features into groups whose population sum was approximately the same (or close to it).

Yesterday, while feeling somewhat braindead, I started a public Zotero library of digitised historic map collections.

It's mostly Australian at the moment, and mostly the stuff I am always sending my family history students to, plus a few other places I use regularly for my own research, but I have grand intentions of adding to it over time – I keep a 'resources' folder in my own Zotero after all.

Feel free to shout your thoughts and additions at me here!

Hey, #mapping fedi, what do you recommend as a web-based SaaS tool (ideally one with a free tier; but not hung up on open-source in this case) for taking a URL to a CSV and displaying the points defined therein on a map, and dynamically updating when the source CSV changes (on a full page refresh is fine, rather than via AJAX)? Plenty of services let you *upload* a CSV, but don't let you link to an external CSV URL.
Use case: I have a CSV and just want to say "give me a map of these rows, please, and update the map when the CSV file changes". The mapping part should be simple, and doable by someone not super familiar with mapping tools.
