Dilsberg: Approximately the same legend as the one of Muggensturm is told about the Dilsberg, a mountain fortress above Neckargemünd. This castle, too, has allegedly repelled a hostile assault by merely hurling beehives down at the attackers, whose inhabitants savaged the besieging forces. In the year 1799, the French sought to take this fortress as well, but they were thrown back by the recuperating invalids stationed there as well as a mob of farmers from the Odenwald region. They suffered losses of more than 70 dead. People still show the so-called “Franzosenhügel” (“Frenchmen’s Hill”) where these corpses rest. Source: Schnezler, A. Badisches Sagen-Buch. Another #Castle ,#Conwy Castle this time. Another #Edward1st construction to control#Wales. Fascinating how 2 brothers captured the castle for #OwainGlyndŵr, tricked their way in then locked the doors. There is still the wall around the main part of the town. You can still climb most of the building and walls. Kings chambers in the castle has its own ditch and draw bridge. Just in case.

Conwy Castle, you can still get around most of the castle, up the towers and along the walls. It was a very rainy day.

We awoke to a day of promising adventures ahead of us. Our first full day here in the Loire Valley began with plans to visit the Château de Chambord. This Château turned out to be about an hour’s drive away from our hotel. The journey may normally take a bit less time but as it happened, the morning dawned with a dense fog that made the drive a bit more challenging. (I am happy to report that we made it safely with no incidents.)

Before any rains came in again we had a lovely morning exploring Goodrich Castle, a mediaeval castle standing on a bluff over the River Wye in Herefordshire. The castle was destroyed in the English civil war & is now a very scenic ruin.

It being Halloween & the end of half term & all, there was some family spooktacular going on, but it wasn’t too hideous & we enjoyed clambering around the mossy ruins.

The impressive ruins of Urquhart Castle on the shore of Loch Ness near Drumnadrochit. Dating back to the 1200s, it possibly stands on the site of a Pictish fort visited by St Columba in 597 and is an ideal location for Nessie spotters. Urquhart Castle. The image shows a view down a slope that has a concrete path and steps leading to the bottom. More paths at the lower level connect stone ruins on the lower left and right of the frame and a taller tower that has been cut away by the passage of time in the upper centre of the frame. Beyond the castle, the blue waters of the loch sweep round and there is distant land beyond the loch, The scene is in sunlight.
