People don't like the intense marine layer in May and June here in Southern California, but we have July, August, September and October ahead of us and with El Niño, those months are sure going to be hot.
Today, some light drizzle added some water to our rain barrels, my morning run 🏃♂️ in sub-70℉ (under 20℃) temperatures was very enjoyable, and the light is nice and even for close-up and intimate landscape photography all day. 😊
North Pacific (35-60N) average sea surface temperatures have been rising since ~1980 and are uncorrelated with #ENSO. If, as expected, El Niño develops/persists through the coming Northern Hemisphere winter, storms will interact with #sst significantly higher than previous El Niños. More water vapor available through evaporation and the potential for stronger storms. Atmospheric rivers anyone? #akwx #bcwx #wawx #orwx #cawx #ExtremeWeather @Climatologist49

It's a beautiful morning at #ForkedMeadow #California where the temperature is currently 40f. Overnight it went down to 36f but we haven't seen freezing conditions in several weeks now. Yesterday's high was 72f. There is still snow in spots in the woods but otherwise it's pretty melted out at 6000ft. Spring is springing!

The good news is that we aren't going to have a late May snow storm... The bad news is we'll see plenty of rain showers and thunderstorms during the extended weekend ⛈🙄.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for the Mojave Desert Slopes from 7 PM PDT this evening until 1 AM PDT early Saturday morning. Blowing dust will reduce visibilities at times. Travel will be difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles. Highways affected include, but are not limited to Highway 14, Highway 178 below Walker Pass, and Highway 58 below Tehachapi Pass, including the town of Mojave.

The marine layer apparently stuck here in SoCal next week, still. NWS LOX: "A strong onshore flow pattern will keep a persistent and deep marine layer in place through next week. Night through morning low clouds and fog will with some afternoon clearing will continue as well. Drizzle or very light rain is possible each morning across coast and valleys. An active spring thunderstorm pattern will continue in California's mountains, along with relatively mild temperatures. As occurred yesterday, a few of these scattered storms could make it into the foothills or fringes of the northern/eastern Central Valley. #CAwx https://t.co/dSFa0j5h0u
Current weather patterns in SF are stuck with Karl the Fog…Happy cool Friday.
If you get the fog to clear & in the sun, it's not bad but all locations are running well below average on temps. AM Drizzle too.
Not much clearing on the coast. It was warmer in SF yesterday (61) than Santa Cruz (60). Rare for May 24th.

Persistence! Here are the maximum forecast temperatures for select cities across the Bay Area and Central Coast heading into the Memorial Day Weekend. #CAwx #BayAreaWX

With the strong winds in Imperial County later this afternoon and evening, blowing dust is likely and could locally lower surface visibility. Please drive with care in western Imperial County if you encounter any visibility restrictions. #cawx

Patchy drizzle once again reported this morning (past 6 hours), especially in locations around Santa Cruz. Even picking up reports at Mt. Toro and Fremont Peak as well as portions of the East Bay hills. Any drizzle in your location? #CAwx #BayAreaWX

In honor of Safe Boating Week, we met with @USCG and SFFD partners earlier today to spread boat safety awareness. Main takeaways include: always wear a life jacket and check weather and sea conditions before going out on the water. See http://weather.gov/safety/safeboating-week for more. #CAwx

#MayGray is very stubborn and well inland today. However, there are indications of "reverse-clearing" where clouds erode first near the beaches. Some coastal sections will see sun at times this afternoon! Woohoo!! #CAwx #LAweather

Drizzle-fest 2.0 - just like Tuesday, moist upslope over the Santa Cruz Mts is leading to patchy drizzle. #cawx

Numerous partners were recognized today @MontereyCountyInfo BoS meeting for supporting our communities impacted by the winter storms. We were honored to stand alongside our partners. We also recognize the depths of the impacts and work still to be done. #CAwx @MontereyCoDEM

Persistent May Gray will keep high temperatures anywhere from 3 to 10 degrees cooler than seasonal normal in the coasts and valleys today.
Meanwhile, the mountains and deserts are wondering "what May Gray?" as highs top out 3 to 6 degrees warmer than normal!

Quite the marine layer y'all got down there on the coast! It's even foggy in L.A.!

#LakeTulare on May 21, 2023 via Sentinel-2 #satellite. The white color you see on the non-flooded fields are blooming cherry trees; it appears the biggest impact of this flooding is going to be loss of cherry trees and cherry crops. #CAwx

An upper level trough impacting the West Coast will result in cooler temperatures for your Tuesday afternoon. Look for upper 50s to lower 60s at the coast with upper 60s to 70s across the interior. These cooler conditions will persist through the week. #CAwx #BayAreaWX

The 5 PM satellite image showed marine layer clouds surging inland (again), and dissipating storms over the mountains and deserts. Tuesday will be a lot like Monday near the coast with more clouds and cool weather. The mountains and deserts will be dry. #cawx

On this day in 1943, it was a warm to hot one in the Bay Area - Record highs for following locations still stand today:
Santa Rosa 97F
San Francisco 85F
Redwood City 95F
Napa 95F
San Jose 94F
Half Moon Bay 79F, btw last time HMB high temp = or > 79F was Oct 20, 2022 (80F).

Heads up Monday morning commuters! Be aware of fog that will reduce visibility below 2 miles at times along your route, especially in the Inland Empire. Foggy conditions are being observed in the San Bernardino mtns as well, with vis under 1/2 mile in spots. Drive safe!

The melt keeps rolling along at #ForkedMeadow #California. It only went down to 40f last night and is already 65f this morning. We've still got a chance for thunderstorms the next few days but so far the storms have stayed north and south of the #DinkeyCreek area.

Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon/evening and again on Sunday. Keep an eye to the sky and seek shelter in a building if possible. If not, a hard-top vehicle with windows rolled up is a good alternative. #LightningSafety #NVwx #CAwx
At this rate, there will only be a few banks of snow in the deepest shadows in the forest at #ForkedMeadow #California by the start of June! The overnight low was 40f and yesterday's high was 71f.
The meadow in this photo is at almost exactly 6000ft. But up at 9000ft, the melt hasn't barely started yet.

Temperatures throughout the Central California interior will remain about 12-15 degrees above normal for this time of year on Monday and on Tuesday. #cawx
The parts of the meadows that have been snow free for several days are starting to green up at #ForkedMeadow #California. The overnight low was 37f and so far it's up to 64f with several more degrees to go today. Maybe there will be a bit of monsoonal moisture coming in over the next several days. #CaWx #Sierra #SierraNevada #Sierras #DinkeyCreek #ShaverLake #SierraNationalForest
While #ForkedMeadow #California might look to be mostly melted out from this photo, up in the woods there are still 8+ft drifts and deep tree wells. Yesterday's high was 68f and the overnight low was 35f. It looks like things will warm up a bit more over the next several days. The melt continues to pick up speed but there is still a LOT of snow left to melt at 6000ft and even more further up.
#CaWx #Sierra #SierraNevada #Sierras #ShaverLake #DinkeyCreek #SierraNationalForest
New Weather West post this PM on upcoming (prolonged?) warming trend across CA and active mountain thunderstorm pattern due to (extreme) high pressure blocking pattern developing over Western Canada. Quite an unusual setup for May... #CAwx #CAwater https://t.co/MZF31lKFjF
The melt is picking up speed again at #ForkedMeadow #California. Yesterday's high was 52f and the overnight low was 30f. Another few days and most of the meadows will be snow free at this elevation (6000ft). Only the pocket meadows that are normally heavily shaded will still have significant snow coverage. Up the hill, the snow is still deep so there's a lot more water to come down the creeks and head for the valley. #CaWx #DinkeyCreek #ShaverLake #Sierra #SierraNevada #Sierras
Vertical tilting of horizontal vorticity in its most dramatic form. Wow! Amazing footage of the Compton EF-0 tornado today.

Well, turned out the models nailed this unusually cold and fairly electric May storm over a week in advance. Widespread showers and scattered thunderstorms across much of NorCal today.
