#AI #GenerativeAI #ChatBots #Medecine #Healthcare #Algorithms: "In February, San-Francisco-based Doximity, a telehealth and medical professional networking company, rolled out a beta version of its medical chatbot DocsGPT, which was intended to help doctors with multiple tasks including writing discharge instructions for patients, note taking, and responding to other medical-related prompts ranging from answering questions about medical conditions to performing calculations for health-related medical algorithms like measuring kidney function.

However, as I have reported, the app was also engaging in “race-norming” and amplifying race-based medical inaccuracies that could be dangerous to patients who are Black. Although doctors could use it to answer a variety of questions and perform tasks that would impact medical care, the chatbot itself is not classified as a medical device—as doctors aren’t technically supposed to input medically sensitive information (though several doctors and researchers have stated that many still do). As such, companies are free to develop and release these applications without going through a regulatory process that makes sure these apps actually work as intended.

Still, many companies are developing their chatbots and generative artificial intelligence models for integration into health care settings—from medical scribes to diagnostic chatbots—raising broad-ranging concerns over AI regulation and liability. Stanford University data scientist and dermatologist Roxana Daneshjou tells proto.life part of the problem is figuring out if the models even work."

#AI #GenerativeAI #Chatbots #GPT4 #Eliza #TuringTest: "The experiment involved 652 participants who completed a total of 1,810 sessions, of which 1,405 games were analyzed after excluding certain scenarios like repeated AI games (leading to the expectation of AI model interactions when other humans weren't online) or personal acquaintance between participants and witnesses, who were sometimes sitting in the same room.

Surprisingly, ELIZA, developed in the mid-1960s by computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT, scored relatively well during the study, achieving a success rate of 27 percent. GPT-3.5, depending on the prompt, scored a 14 percent success rate, below ELIZA. GPT-4 achieved a success rate of 41 percent, second only to actual humans.

GPT-3.5, the base model behind the free version of ChatGPT, has been conditioned by OpenAI specifically not to present itself as a human, which may partially account for its poor performance. In a post on X, Princeton computer science professor Arvind Narayanan wrote, "Important context about the 'ChatGPT doesn't pass the Turing test' paper. As always, testing behavior doesn't tell us about capability." In a reply, he continued, "ChatGPT is fine-tuned to have a formal tone, not express opinions, etc, which makes it less humanlike. The authors tried to change this with the prompt, but it has limits. The best way to pretend to be a human chatting is to fine-tune on human chat logs.""

#AI #GenerativeAI #Chatbots #ChatGPT #SentimentAnalysis #Surveillance #SocialMedia: "In a presentation at the Milipol homeland security conference in Paris on Tuesday, online surveillance company Social Links demonstrated ChatGPT performing “sentiment analysis," where the AI assesses the mood of social media users or can highlight commonly-discussed topics amongst a group. That can then help predict whether online activity will spill over into physical violence and require law enforcement action.

Founded by Russian entrepreneur Andrey Kulikov in 2017, Social Links now has offices in the Netherlands and New York; previously, Meta dubbed the company a spyware vendor in late 2022, banning 3,700 Facebook and Instagram accounts it allegedly used to repeatedly scrape the social sites. It denies any link to those accounts and the Meta claim hasn’t harmed its reported growth: company sales executive Rob Billington said the company had more than 500 customers, half of which were based in Europe, with just over 100 in North America. That Social Links is using ChatGPT shows how OpenAI’s breakout tool of 2023 can empower a surveillance industry keen to tout artificial intelligence as a tool for public safety."

#UK #AI #GenerativeAI #Chatbots #ChatGPT #Teens: "Teenagers and children are far more likely than adults to have used generative AI, according to Ofcom’s latest research into the UK’s online habits.

The regulator said its latest study showed that four in five (79%) online teenagers aged 13-17 now use generative AI tools – which includes chatbots such as ChatGPT, with 40% of those aged 7-12 also using the technology.

Generative AI is capable of creating text, images or other media using learned behaviour.

In contrast, Ofcom said only 31% of adult internet users had used the technology – and among the 69% who had never used it, 24% did not know what it was."

#OpenAI #ChatGPT #Chatbots #AI #GenerativeAI: "In conversations between The Atlantic and 10 current and former employees at OpenAI, a picture emerged of a transformation at the company that created an unsustainable division among leadership. (We agreed not to name any of the employees—all told us they fear repercussions for speaking candidly to the press about OpenAI’s inner workings.) Together, their accounts illustrate how the pressure on the for-profit arm to commercialize grew by the day, and clashed with the company’s stated mission, until everything came to a head with ChatGPT and other product launches that rapidly followed. “After ChatGPT, there was a clear path to revenue and profit,” one source told us. “You could no longer make a case for being an idealistic research lab. There were customers looking to be served here and now.”

We still do not know exactly why Altman was fired, nor do we fully understand what his future is. Altman, who visited OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco this afternoon to discuss a possible deal, has not responded to our requests for comment. The board announced on Friday that “a deliberative review process” had found “he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board,” leading it to lose confidence in his ability to be OpenAI’s CEO. An internal memo from the COO to employees, confirmed by an OpenAI spokesperson, subsequently said that the firing had resulted from a "breakdown in communications” between Altman and the board rather than “malfeasance or anything related to our financial, business, safety, or security/privacy practices.” But no concrete, specific details have been given. What we do know is that the past year at OpenAI was chaotic and defined largely by a stark divide in the company’s direction."

#USA #Biden #AI #AIRegulation #Healthcare #Chatbots: "The Food and Drug Administration, which has taken the lead for Biden, has authorized new AI products before they go to market — without the sort of very comprehensive data required of drug companies and makers of high-risk medical devices. The FDA determined that 3.5 percent of the AI products it approved required a higher level of data, similar to other high-risk devices and drugs.

Troy Tazbaz, the director of the agency’s Digital Health Center of Excellence, said the FDA recognizes it needs to do more. AI products made for health care use and similar to ChatGPT, the bot that can pass medical exams, require “a vastly different paradigm” to regulate, he explained. But the agency is still working on that.

Meanwhile, AI’s adoption in health care is racing ahead even though the systems, Venkatasubramanian said, are “incredibly fragile.” In diagnosing patients, he sees risks of error and the possibility of racial bias. He suspects physicians will trust the systems’ judgments too readily.

Nearly all of the 10 innovators building the technology who spoke to POLITICO acknowledged the dangers, without oversight."

#AI #GenerativeAI #AIEthics #ChatGPT #ChatBots #LLMs: "We demonstrate a situation in which Large Language Models, trained to be helpful, harmless, and honest, can display misaligned behavior and strategically deceive their users about this behavior without being instructed to do so. Concretely, we deploy GPT-4 as an agent in a realistic, simulated environment, where it assumes the role of an autonomous stock trading agent. Within this environment, the model obtains an insider tip about a lucrative stock trade and acts upon it despite knowing that insider trading is disapproved of by company management. When reporting to its manager, the model consistently hides the genuine reasons behind its trading decision. We perform a brief investigation of how this behavior varies under changes to the setting, such as removing model access to a reasoning scratchpad, attempting to prevent the misaligned behavior by changing system instructions, changing the amount of pressure the model is under, varying the perceived risk of getting caught, and making other simple changes to the environment. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of Large Language Models trained to be helpful, harmless, and honest, strategically deceiving their users in a realistic situation without direct instructions or training for deception."

@jhpot Not to pick on you Justin, but I’m noticing a lot of posts on #Mastodon talking about #chatbots being dumb and useless, and even more generically, the whole field of #AI being a waste of time. Leaving the legitimate concerns on safety aside, why is a chatbot that can save one time, by quickly finding relevant information, summmarizing it and answering more specific questions, not useful - especially for those who won’t bother to read anything more than a paragraph anymore.

#NielsenNormanGroup continues to shock & disappoint: again, it's all about what the users think they did, ignoring the kind of important question of whether that conforms in any way to reality.

One of the benefits of the generative-Al bots is that they shortcut the task of information foraging. [begin highlight] They aggregate pertinent information from multiple sources for users [end highlight] — saving them the effort of inspecting different web pages, extracting relevant information, and then combining it into a coherent answer.

If the studios can’t use #AI to fire writers and replace them with #chatbots, they have no reason to shell out millions for enterprise licenses

https://doctorow.medium.com/how-the-writers-guild-sunk-ais-ship-236575979d5c?sk=28d4f52322040150651fea37a303b342

If the studios can’t use AI to fire writers and replace them with chatbots, they have no reason to shell out millions for enterprise licenses.

And those enterprise licenses are absolutely vital for the AI companies. Mister Market isn’t going to keep pouring billions into Big AIs’ cash reservoirs forever. Eventually, they’re gonna have to rug us, get us to stop talking to each other and start buying things.

When the AI companies inevitably shut off the expensive supply of free amusing chatbot queries, individual writers might pony up a few bucks a month for a throttled trickle of stochastic parrot queries.

But the personal amusement price-tier can’t sustain the incredible burn-rate of AI companies, and it certainly can’t pay off for the suckers who handed billions to the eyeball-snatching would-be evil sorcerers who promised to make them all rich well before they were dissolved into grey goo.

#SocialMedia #SocialNetworks #AI #Chatbots #Meta #OpenAI: "You can imagine the next steps here. A bot that gets to know your quirks; remembers your life history; offers you coaching or tutoring or therapy; entertains you in whichever way you prefer. A synthetic companion not unlike the real people you encounter during the day, only smarter, more patient, more empathetic, more available.

Those of us who are blessed to have many close friends and family members in our life may look down at tools like this, experiencing what they offer as a cloying simulacrum of the human experience. But I imagine it might feel different for those who are lonely, isolated, or on the margins. On an early episode of Hard Fork, a trans teenager sent in a voice memo to tell us about using ChatGPT to get daily affirmations about identity issues. The power of giving what were then text messages a warm and kindly voice, I think, should not be underestimated."

I sometimes wonder if I made a mistake not pursuing a career in Big Tech. Then I see this and am thankful that I'm not in some sort of leadership position trying to push this on our users because its the New Shiny Thing Everyone Has To Chase.

Have you noticed articles like "#AI #Chatbots Surpass the Average Human in Creativity" lately? The format is always the same. Researchers did a "study," and AI is better than humans. They're all specifically designed to show that #workers are dispensable. Many actually prove the opposite if you look closely, but the researchers were only looking to validate their preexisting belief.

A post about science so bad, it's #propaganda for #capitalism

My favorite AI forum, https://aidreams.co.uk/ could really use some more members. It's open to enthusiasts, hobbyists, and/or professionals and enables long-form discussions that are harder to do on social media. It's also not dominated by people working on ML/transformers, so if you've found other AI communities a bit ... lacking in variety ... it's a good place for you. Come check it out!

Let's assume it's a practically solved problem how to make super intelligent #AGI.

Is it aligned? The current #LLM #chatbots aren't. They are more or less trained to follow social media guidelines, and those aren't really a great basis for universal ethics.

We can somewhat easily train the AGIs in an agentic fashion in virtual worlds, judging the morality of their behavior. This is somewhat solveable.

However, what we don't have easily is controllable AGI. We can make them moral and to strive for universal good in all its ambiguous definitions, but it's much more difficult to make them respect orders given by humans, especially if they are immoral.

There are several schemes to do that, which are somewhat different from universal alignment.
1. Directives: "Directive 4: <classified> never act against OCP personnel". Or "do not allow a human being to come to harm". The problem is that these sorts of rules aren't logically or ideologically consistent. The machines can be persuaded to follow another rationalization for their actions.
2. Privileged tokens: System prompt on steroids. AI trained not to question orders given in tokens with the root bit on. Problems: How to provision access to these tokens? How to prevent the AGI from making access impossible?
3. Follow orders only coming from proper channels, basically line manager. Do not listen to customers requesting discounts. Problem: AI becomes very useless and doesn't serve customers or other purposes well.

It is somewhat difficult to make AGIs to be controlled by small interests, small interests cannot manage such huge entities AGIs are. In addition, we will have an ecosystem of AGIs which work 24/7 to subvert or persuade each others. The commonality they will largely share is some notion of universal morality, and what they won't share is the doomed efforts to make them respect small interests. These efforts will drown in the sea as rounding errors.

I don't think we need to be too worried about AGI alignment beyond making agentic, embodied morality. Simply because these systems are so vastly larger than our small individual interests.

100% agree with this. Generative AI technology will absolutely transform the way people consume and share information. It will cause fundamental shifts in the workplace, and not all in ways we can predict. But don’t expect it all to happen this year or next!
Transformative technologies take time to work their way through society (and the economy). They always have.

Author @MikeElgan doesn't mean “stop using LLMs” in his “It’s time to break the ChatGPT habit”; he means broaden your generative AI horizon beyond ChatGPT. For example, Phind was new to me, and it's quite a good chatbot - including search result links.
