"Parkinson’s disease is the fastest growing brain condition in the world. A new paper co-authored by Dr. Ray Dorsey at the University of Rochester Medical Center shows that a common chemical may be fueling the rise of the disease. #Trichloroethylene (#TCE) is used to #DryClean clothes, to #decaffeinate coffee, and to #degrease metal. It was one of the main contaminant at the Marine Corps base #CampLejeune and has been found in up to one-third of the #groundwater in the U.S. According to the research, TCE is linked with a 500 percent increased risk of Parkinson’s disease."

Disturbing details from Grist about the Ohio train crash and chemical spill...
__________________________

"The train derailment in Ohio was a disaster waiting to happen"
https://grist.org/accountability/train-derailments-business-usual-railroad-industry/

When a freight train filled with volatile chemicals derailed in rural Ohio earlier this month, it set off a chain of reactions: the evacuation of a town of nearly 5,000 people; a massive black plume of smoke from a controlled burn; the death of fish in local waterways; and the necessity of monitoring the local air for pollutants.

Justin Mikulka, a reporter who spent years researching the rail industry’s pitfalls and disasters and wrote the book Bomb Trains: How Industry Greed and Regulatory Failure Put the Public at Risk, said weakened regulations and a rush to reopen is to be expected.

“While the trains are still burning, they’re rebuilding the rails,” Mikulka says. “It’s an excellent example of how they put profit over public safety.”

In the last two decades, train lengths have increased by 25 percent, according to the Government Accountability Office. Currently, the Federal Railroad Administration does not have a limit on how long a train can be.

A Northfolk Southern spokesperson told Grist that there were three operators on board the train that derailed, one conductor, one engineer, and a conductor trainee. In recent years, rail companies have lobbied for one-person crews to cut costs.

When crews are stretched thin, Mikulka said, accidents and derailments are just waiting to happen. He said calls from workers for increased safety measures have gone unheard. “There are so many different points in this process where we look at how we can make it safer, and the rail company says ‘Yeah, but we don’t want to pay for that.’”

The scariest thing to me is that something like this *will* happen again. It's only a matter of time, and the next one might occur in a more highly populated area, which could then get even uglier and deadlier.

As the lake levels decrease, 800 square miles of lakebed are being exposed, and the soil is full of natural and manmade toxins such as mercury, arsenic, and selenium. With the wind and dust storms, the toxins can spread to more than 2.5 million people, posing a risk to human health.

I have a few readers, it seems, who are offended, even scandalized, each time I suggest there could be anything at all wrong with the good 'ol USA and its holy scripture, Capitalism.

So get ready, people, I'm doin' it again!

This time I'll refer you to an article on Medium which takes the recent rail disaster in Ohio as a starting point, and from there finds three overall lessons for us to learn...

Lesson 1: Capitalists don’t care about the biosphere

Lesson 2: Capitalists don’t care about people

Lesson 3: Capitalists don’t care about the future

It's a very good piece, and I hope you'll go there and read the whole thing.
https://sacredkarailee.medium.com/human-sacrifice-and-you-capitalisms-big-ask-221f1cba0ce8

Near the end, the author has this to say...
_________________________

Clearly, the mechanism for dealing with environmental contaminants is to diffuse them into the biosphere and let nature pick up the tab. That’s why they set the chemicals on fire in East Palestine.

They’re doing the same thing with ‘forever chemicals’. These chemicals cannot be degraded by biologic processes and simply accumulate in the environment to such an extent that it’s currently unsafe to drink ordinary rainwater.

We’re at the point where nature is simply overwhelmed by our civilizational overflows and is in the process of collapsing around us as a result.

How long can our civilization withstand the corrosion brought about by unfettered capitalism? How long must we be bound to laws which do not protect us, but which sacrifice us instead in an orgy of indifference, incompetence, and inequality?

The recent train derailment and chemical spill in Ohio is a complete tragedy of errors. Given how badly the original situation was handled, and how poorly it's still being managed, it seems only a matter of time before another potentially even worse disaster will occur.

Here is an update from Grist, with some scary details...
_____________________

Nearly two weeks after a train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed in rural Ohio, questions still linger about the lasting effects of the incident and the speed at which residents were returned to their homes.

According to the manifest of contents inside the railcars provided to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from Norfolk Southern, undisclosed amounts of butyl acrylate, a hazardous chemical known to cause skin irritation that is used in plastic production, and propylene glycol, a generally non-toxic chemical used in food packaging, spilled during the derailment. Additionally, undisclosed amounts of ethylhexyl acrylate, a carcinogen linked to aquatic death, and petroleum spilled at the site.

On Tuesday, Ohio environmental regulators confirmed that butyl acrylate was found in nearby waterways and that the spill did make its way to the Ohio River.

The release of hazardous chemicals barrelling through rural Ohio late in the night have caused a variety of concerns. Residents have reported headaches, dizziness, and fevers since returning home on February 8 as they continue to conduct voluntary home air and water tests.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said he learned that the train cars were marked as non-hazardous, and thus officials weren’t notified that the train would be crossing through the state.

The governor called on Congress to look into the regulations that would allow a train carrying multiple cars with hazardous substances to be labeled non-hazardous.

The derailment did not result in any immediate human fatalities, but residents are now reporting deaths of pets, chickens, and foxes. Given the spill’s proximity to the Ohio River Basin, which touches 14 states in the region, concerns of surrounding pollution have popped up in middle Tennessee, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Ohio, and West Virginia.

In addition to the vinyl chloride, various other chemicals were spilled, leading to concern for water, soil, and groundwater pollution.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources confirmed 3,500 dead fish in waterways as well as deceased hellbender salamanders, an endangered species in the state.

The toxic disaster in East Palestine, Ohio after the chemical releases following the train derailment reveal classic #toxic
disaster management techniques.

The true extent of the danger and seriousness of the event is not made clear to people when it happens. Instead their anxieties are managed.

This is a way to protect capital, and liability rather than living creatures. It is similar to the denial of there having been #nuclear meltdowns at #Fukushima for three months by the government of Japan. This was to protect reputation and perceptions, not human beings.

My advice, as always: when an industrial disaster happens, what you are being told about the hazards on the first day are, at best, 10% of the real dangers you face. Always assume that you should get away as fast as possible. Finding out you are wrong later is easier than the opposite.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/feb/11/ohio-train-derailment-wake-up-call

Some people are making comparisons of this Ohio train wreck to the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl. But to me there's another historical event that seems far more similar and also provides an even more ominous warning for us: the chemical gas leak that occurred in Bhopal, India, in 1984, killing tens of thousands of people.

https://www.britannica.com/event/Bhopal-disaster

I'm old enough to remember when this happened, and it was horrific. Could something just as bad take place today in the United States?

As oil companies eagerly produce ever greater amounts of petrochemicals for making plastics and as demand for those plastics keeps increasing year after year, and as capitalists continue lobbying for relaxed safety regulations and lowered environmental protection to increase their profits, along with reduced wages and shabbier working conditions for train personnel, it all seems to create the perfect recipe for another deadly disaster.

Let's hope I'm wrong.

Under the Biden administration, the transportation department has proposed a suspension of the Trump-era LNG rule allowing the substance to be transported via rail and to replace it with a new rule. The suspension was supposed to be published by June 2022, but it and the new rule have been delayed twice, and are now supposed to be final in March, Ong said.

Still, the US transportation department (DoT) in 2020 approved a rule to allow liquified natural gas, or LNG, to be shipped via rail with no additional safety regulations. Trains can now run 100 or more tank cars filled with 30,000 gallons of the substance, largely from shale fields to saltwater ports.

Just 22 train tank cars filled with LNG hold the same amount of energy as the Hiroshima bomb, a coalition of environmental groups wrote in comments to regulators opposing the LNG rail rule change in 2020. That is raising fears of a catastrophe if a proposed LNG port is built in New Jersey, which could take shipments from two 100-car trains daily that would run through nearby metro Philadelphia.

Up to 50% of volatile Bakken crude oil refined on the east coast currently runs through metro Pittsburgh, RPPP estimated, and about 176,000 Pittsburghers live in the derailment blast zone.

“The railroads are playing Russian roulette with Pittsburgh,” he said.

About 4.5m tons of toxic chemicals are shipped by rail each year and an average of 12,000 rail cars carrying hazardous materials pass through cities and towns each day, according to the US Department of Transportation.

Norfolk Southern said 20 of the more than 100 cars were classified as carrying hazardous materials — defined as cargo that could pose any kind of danger “including flammables, combustibles, or environmental risks.” Graham said 14 cars carrying vinyl chloride were involved in the derailment “and have been exposed to fire,” and at least one “is intermittently releasing the contents of the car through a pressure release device as designed.”

Few days ago a train carrying hazardous materials derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. Crews have since been burning off the toxic chemicals. Claims that air/water quality are safe are turning out to be false. Evacuation orders are even being lifted as people return to the area. No-one died.

Controlled Release of Toxic Chemicals Planned to Avoid Explosion of Derailed Train
https://www.commondreams.org/news/toxic-chemical-release-avoid-derailed-train-explosion
This is a possibility in many US cities & towns, with densely populated areas at risk. Why is this? You know the answer--it's the most profitable way to do things. Oh, there may be a few accidents along the way (there have been), but...well, what you gonna do about it, huh?

Spending some time on a snowy Sunday to jot down some thoughts for @anjakrieger and @PlastispherePod. Many #chemicals in #plastics are #toxic! They harm human and environmental health and render safe #recycling a sheer pipedream.

Interesting. Research on a new possible mosquito repellent.

"The new cyclic compounds had pleasant, much fainter odors and were easier to dissolve in water, meaning they can be formulated without high concentrations of alcohol. Some were as effective as DEET and picaridin at repelling Asian tiger mosquitos"

#Cigarettebutt filters are #toxic! They are made of a semisynthetic material and contribute to #microfiber pollution. They also contain 1000s of #chemicals. We found that leachates induced mortality and developmental deformities in midge larvae.

Erbium [Er 068] is a lanthanide, a rare-earth element, originally found in the gadolinite mine in Ytterby, Sweden. A large variety of medical applications (i.e. dermatology, dentistry) rely on the erbium ion's 2940 nm emission, which is highly absorbed in water in tissues, making its effect very superficial making it helpful in laser surgery, and for the efficient production of steam which produces enamel ablation by common types of dental laser. #elements #periodictable #chemicals #erbium

@Sheril

Truly #brilliant man.

I had heard one of his favorite #parlor games was to drink #household #chemicals.

He knew the ones to drink and in what quantities along with neutralizing agents to prevent himself from any real harm.

The things he could have done with an actual computer from today...

"#Natural" doesn't mean it's safe. Strychnine is natural too.

"No #chemicals" is impossible. Everything in nature is made out of chemical compounds.

"No #poisons". Nearly everything in nature is poisonous. It's the dose that matters. You can be poisoned by water.

"Essential oils" are not essential. It's a pretty bad misnomer.

All these words above and more, are abused by people who reject #science and try to part you from your money by using scare tactics.
