Today in Labor History March 18, 1871: The Paris Commune began on this date. It started with resistance to occupying German troops and the power of the bourgeoisie. They governed from a feminist and anarcho-communist perspective, abolishing rent and child labor, and giving workers the right to take over workplaces abandoned by the owners. The revolutionaries took over control of Paris and held on to it for two months, until it was brutally suppressed. During Semaine Sanglante, the nationalist forces slaughtered 15,000-20,000 Communards. Hundreds more were tried and executed or deported.

This we can absolutely be certain of:
It will not be the children of the Republican legislators passing these laws to weaken public education and deprive children from economically struggling and minority backgrounds of sound educations who will be placed at risk by these laws.
And it will not be the children of the Republican legislators passing these laws who will be working on the kill floors and on construction sites.
These are interrelated activities. Public education on the whole serves children from less affluent or privileged backigrounds. It serves many children from minority communities and immigrant backgrounds.
Undermining public education quite specifically targets those children — who happen to be the very same children Republican legislatures envisage taking jobs in slaughter houses and on construction sites.
In Republican-controlled states now, we see multiple actions that are interconnected:
The state taking control of public schools in Democratic-voting cities; a move to 4-day school weeks; publicly funded vouchers for parents sending children to private (usually church-run) schools; AND a move to relax laws prohibiting child labor.

This is devastating. And important to talk about. I wish journalists here would also investigate the stories of working migrant children. Every two years or so, there's a short piece about how many unaccompanied minor refugees vanished from German shelters, and that some were found later with relatives in other European countries, but that's it. It never gets the attention it shoukd have.
I had a discussion with a person today who made the following claims:
- #California #MinimumWage was implemented to prevent business from practicing #ChildLabor.
- In the early 1900s, #CompulsoryEducation was implemented in CA as a place to send children instead of work.
In good faith, I’ve researched these claims & found no correlation. Where could this person be getting this information? It’s the first I’ve ever heard this argument.

Child labor, huh? When my cousins were early tweens, they worked alongside my aunt in asparagus harvesting each season, to have enough money to live. They were NOT the youngest children there. The one difference? They were white. Migrant children are Already being used as free/cheap labor and we need enforcement, not to empower their abusers.
"When we think about kids working who are 14, we think about who this might protect, it's not the 14-year-old who's working at the ice cream parlor in your hometown, whose parents have given them permission to work. We're worried about the children who are at risk of being exploited and who are being exploited today," Laura Kellams, the northwest Arkansas director of the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, a group that advocates for children's rights in the state, said earlier this month during a committee hearing on the bill.
“Just because there’s a shortage of workers doesn’t mean you can turn your back on almost 100 years of child labor law and start hiring kids, especially for dangerous jobs, which is what we’re seeing happen increasingly in the country," said Reid Maki, director of child labor advocacy at the National Consumers League. "That doesn’t make any sense.”
Other states are also considering legislation to unravel child labor protections. One bill advancing in the Iowa legislature would allow 14-year-olds to perform some work in freezers and meat coolers and would allow children under 16 to work up to six hours a day while school is in session. It would also exempt businesses from civil liability if a student in a work-based study program is sickened, injured or killed because of the company’s negligence. The Minnesota bill would let 16- and 17-year-olds work construction jobs.

Sanders' signing of the bill comes after a major US food sanitation company that operated facilities in eight states, including Arkansas, recently paid a $1.5 million civil penalty for employing minors in hazardous conditions.
Last month, the Labor Department announced it had found more than 3,800 children working at U.S. companies in violation of federal law. More than 100 children, some as young as 13, were working hazardous overnight jobs cleaning slaughterhouses for Packers Sanitation Services Inc., one of the country's largest food sanitation companies, the Labor Department said. Some of them used "caustic chemicals to clean razor-sharp saws," the department said. Ten of the violations occurred in Arkansas.
Since 2018, there has been a 69 percent increase in the number of children employed illegally by companies, the Labor Department said.

Under the law, the Youth Hiring Act of 2023, children under 16 do not have to obtain permission from the Division of Labor to get a job. They will no longer need to get an employment certificate, which verified their age, described their work and work schedule, and included written consent from a parent or guardian. Sanders signed the bill into law on Tuesday.
Alexa Henning, Sanders' communication director, said that the permit requirement had placed an "arbitrary burden on parents" who needed government permission for their child to get a job.
The bill's passage comes after the Biden administration announced last month plans to crackdown on labor exploitation of migrant children across the country, the New York Times reported, following an investigation conducted by the publication.

As an Australian reading about #childlabor in the US, I’m reflecting on how common it is for students I teach to have started paid work at 13 and 14. In NSW there is no minimum age, it’s left to big retailers to set age policy. So during lockdowns the most at risk workers were kids staffing supermarket checkouts and fast food take out who couldn’t get vaccinated, and who were framed in govt policy as entirely safe because they weren’t going to school. Why were those kids at work? Because the junior pay rate for 15 and under can go down to 45% of adult minimum wage. Retail profits depend on teenage workers.
