In the U.S., the institutional Church is dying. I've heard it's happening across the West. It's time we acknowledge what's going on and started behaving like entrepreneurs. Let's not be Kodak.

Joseph Smith is my great, great, great grandfather, though these days I prefer to claim Emma because she's a badass... When I deconstructed Mormonism, I remember deconstructing Joseph Smith and all of the things I learned at once: he was dishonest, a con-man, a treasure digger, a polygamist, he coerced women and teens to marry him, and he was a narcissist. The Mormon in me was in disbelief, but the Smith in me recognized my father in Joseph Smith immediately.

I did find people that wanted to hear my story, and could either relate, or were fascinated by, and held space for, my experiences. I found authenticity, love, and acceptance  in new, beautiful, meaningful  relationships. These relationships are closer and more fulfilling than the relationships I had in Mormonism.  Looking back now, I realize Mormonism was never a space one could be authentic. When conformity and obedience is valued above all else; when you cannot question, criticize, research, or think outside of your belief system, there can’t be authenticity.

I'm happier than I have ever been. My kids are happier too. My deconstruction of Mormonism led to the deconstruction of so many other things as well. Deconstruction has been the most painful and rewarding, beautiful experience of my life.

Shortly after that feeling of peace and love from God in the temple, I watched General Conference and I was filled with fear about the spiritual and physical safety of my family, and frustration that my spouse gave up, and now it was all on me to keep my kids safely in the church. I was angry towards him, but then I remembered the feeling of peace and love I received from God, and I paused. I thought it was odd that the message of love/peace is what I received from God, and the message of fear is what I received from my leaders.

This led me to research the question: How can I know when the prophets are speaking for God and when they are speaking as men? All I found were contradictions as I researched examples from church history. For instance, one prophet declares a doctrine, calls it such, and even declares it is from God, and later that doctrine is disavowed and called a policy by later prophets.

I kept researching this question, trying to make it fit together, because I knew God was not a God of confusion, but I only found more and more disturbing facts in church history. And then I realized suddenly: **They are never speaking for God, they are always speaking as men.** And it suddenly ALL made sense. All at once, my entire testimony/worldview/identity crumbled. Thirty-seven years of faithful, believing membership, gone.

I was born into the church, married in the temple, and remained active for 37 years. I had six kids that I homeschooled, I attended the temple monthly, faithfully paid tithing and gave generous fast offerings, served in many callings, and loved studying the gospel just for fun. I'm a direct descendant of Emma Smith. I love Crossfit, dancing, and all things outdoors. I was a mormon.

I was excited when the new church history came out. I was surprised to hear a different version of church history than what I was raised with. I put myself in the shoes of the Saints and wondered if I were them, would I have accepted the church? To my own surprise, I admitted to myself that I probably would not have joined because it sounded a lot like a religious cult.

My spouse left the church. I went to the temple to pray about it, and I received a beautiful, loving response from God, assurance that my spouse was on his own path and that was ok, and that our family was loved and safe.

Worshipping at a Mexican church this morning was such a joy! For me I rarely sing at church but process the words in my head. Today I felt free to sing and worship from my heart not even knowing what words I was singing.

Moving church?

Four questions to ask:

• What are my non-negotiable doctrines?
• Do people welcome me with genuine love?
• Does the pastor love me or an extra number?
• Is the wisdom from the Bible, tradition or the leaders' ingenuity?

Bathe it all in prayer.

I’m here. I’m queer. I love the ocean, coffee, wine, and therapy . I was a mormon.

Born and raised Mormon. Life long internalized homophobia. Checked off all the boxes. 50 years, a husband of 30 years, and 4 kids later I woke up and realized that I was in cult.

My queer daughter told me I was toxic to her and didn’t love her for who she was. She wanted to end contact with me and it broke me. I couldn’t lose my child and I decided to get over my homophobia.

It led me to realize that the church leaders DO NOT speak for the god that I believed in at the time. I could see that god would never treat the lgbtq community the way the mormon leaders do and would never make me choose between church and my child.

Once I realized that they were absolutely wrong about that, I started asking myself what else they were wrong about…

This week I had the privilege of reading the book At The Gates: Disability, Justice and the Churches by @naomilawsonjacobs and @emjric.

Through personal stories and delving into the Old and New Testaments, this book has opened my eyes to ways that disabled Christians have been excluded from the body of Christ, and sometimes even hurt by well (or not-so-well) meaning fellow believers.

A series of arches light a long dark hallway, with a light at the end of the tunnel. The top of the arches are lit from below, with some thin cross motifs between them.
A long dark hallway, taken off-angle. Semi-circular arches are lit from below, and the view exposes detail of the cross-arches. Black vaults are separated by the concentric gold arches.
A black and white view into a darkened hall from just outside carved wooden doors. A central globe casts meager light into the spacious hall and three doors with semicircular archways lie open at the far end, with light spilling onto the floor from the far end. The top of the near doorway sports the moniker “Hall of Ideas” on the lintel above.

The Saxon tower and west wall to which it is attached are the oldest parts of the church, which was founded AD674.

"Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds" says the Letter to the Hebrews, "not neglecting to meet together...but encouraging one another."

Those are appropriate words to consider as the #COVID pandemic grinds on. And make no mistake: it does grind on.

Abandoned church in England 🇬🇧

I climbed up the back of the tall altar, and onto the narrow window ledge. This gave a very interesting vantage point to shoot my photos from.

Kinda looks like I am hovering several metres off the floor though 😂

Did you know that #grain #politics were so important in #AncientRome that they got deified?

If #famine was near, Roman citizens could expect a free grain ration from the #ruler.

To let themselves be celebrated for their benevolence, the gifts were said to come from Annona, a #goddess of grain.

She lacks proper #mythology, but was well received by the Roman public.

The practice survived well after the fall of the imperial reign, and
the #church took over in 590 A.D.

#history #ancient

The photo shows an Ancient Roman coin.

The coin is gold, and the face shows a woman in flowing robes, with her hair covered. In her left hand, she holds a cornucopia, and in her right hand what looks like ears of grain.

There is a text around the woman reading "ANNONA AUG" for Annona, the goddess shown, and Augustus, the imperial onel.

Forgot I had an account here! The past several weeks I finally got hooked to the #Fediverse 😂 took awhile for it to catch on for me but it finally did and now I can't put it down.

So here's a little #introduction post for this instance! 😁

I grew up in a strict #christian household and stopped going to #church when I became a teenager. My #religious upbringing brought me a lot of religion related trauma and for a long time I felt resentful of the church and my father for the things that really hurt me during my upbringing.

I had my #SpiritualAwakening back in 2016 triggered by my first #OutOfBodyExperience. It wasn't a much of an out of body experience, but happened simply because I was curious about what #AstralProjection was, and spirit decided to show me that day. That was the catalyst that set me down the #spiritual path.

From there it lead me down the rabbit hole of astral projection, #ShadowWork, #reiki, opening the #ThirdEye, #manifestation, #divination, #DreamWork, and a bunch of other things.

These days my path has narrowed a bit and my primary method of expansion is shadow work, and dream work plays a big role in my shadow work. This path has allowed me to heal from a lot of religious trauma I experienced growing up and get to know myself on a much deeper level.

#Tarot and #oracle reading is also something I still practice fairly regularly and recently I have been really wanting to learn more about the #pagan #WheelOfTheYear and getting in tune with nature's cycles.

My biggest spiritual inspiration is #GigiYoung. She teaches a lot about #occult science from #RudolfSteiner's work, #cosmology, and diving deep into the sinister agendas of elite groups involved in the dark occult.

That's me in a nutshell! 😊 Thanks for having me, and thanks to the admin for increasing the character limit on posts. 😁 I like to write a lot, and the increased character limit makes this an excellent blogging platform!

Yeah nah.

This one is, I think, still doing pay-what-you-want. CHRÇH provide some incredibly focused doom vibes with no song shorter than nine minutes. Sludgy and harrowing!

After centuries submitting to the church’s patriarchy, ‘deconstruction’ has empowered Texas women to question the tenets of their faith—and it could change the face of Evangelicalism for good.

My husband grew up #unitarian I had a hilarious conversation with the pastor at his church who wanted to know why more people didn't come.

"well do you REALLY want to know?" she said "have at it."

"You need better music. Get a base and a drum set. Hire a director for the Choir. no volunteers. #Church music ought to slap."

IDK if they took the advice she looked kinda stunned.🤣

Today’s my favourite day in the #ChristmasTide — the feast of Stephen (#BoxingDay or #WrenDay as it commonly known).
But why do I like the #FeastOfStephen so much? Two reasons and it’s not really about the Saint or the day:
1. My favourite #Christmas song is #GoodKingWenceslas — it is a beautiful song, with an iconic melody; the song is set on this day “Good King #Wenceslas looked out, On the Feast of Stephen” In fact I like St Wenceslas far more than St Stephen, but that’s another story.
2. This reason is the one I like the most. There is an odd tradition in #England to give unnamed parliamentary buildings the name of “St Stephen’s (insert building here)” — why? Well let’s look at who St Stephen was (in brief).
He is considered the first #Christian #Martyr or known as “Protomartyr”. He he was a deacon in the early #Church at Jerusalem who angered members of various synagogues by his teachings. Accused of blasphemy at his trial, he made a speech denouncing the authorities and was stoned to death in 36 AD.
I was told by an officer of the Houses of Parliament the #myth is that his name is used because he stood for justice and truth, as the Mother Parliament should. An irony — even from its inception and especially today.

And there we go; happy Boxing Day / Feast of Stephen.

Admittedly, I rarely step foot inside churches other than for weddings and funerals, but I have no problem appreciating the architecture.

This is the back of St. Anne's Catholic church, as seen from old Highway 40 just outside of Walker Kansas. Shot March 23, 2019. The front of the church can be seen on Google street view if you're interested.

Challenging blog post from @RichardJMurphy

"The Christian message at Christmas is one of radical economic reform. Why doesn't the Church say that? Is it just too embedded with the proud and the mighty it's meant to be pulling down?"

If we cannot openly talk about the sin of racism and white supremacy in the church, & the church is supposed to be the hospital for sin & sickness, then where else do we expose it? If the church doesn't expose it, then they are complicit in defending it. #whitesupremacy #evangelicals #church #racism #christian #christianity #christians #christiannationalism #blackmastodon
