Burt Lancaster wouldn't get the chance to play a Mexican today, but this was the 70s, and he's absolutely convincing as the former soldier, now downtrodden constable, who takes on a corrupt rancher.

The actual 'plot' gets a little too harsh at times, but not enough to overflow the stunts and acrobatics. The chase in the building site is fabulously inventive.

A favourite film a day for 365 days: Year of the Dragon.

More moral conflict. The hero isn't particularly nice, while the villain is well-spoken, charming and utterly ruthless. Scorching, savage tale of the New York drug war in the 80s, with dialogue scenes as intense the gunfights.

I love this for the way it takes its time setting all the characters up, and only then introduces the murders that send the plot off in a totally new direction and sets all the moral compasses spinning. Fabulous piece of storytelling.

Never met anyone else who likes this story about a famous comic who wants to be 'taken seriously', yet has to deal with obtuse or invasive fans, a girlfriend suffering a mental breakdown, and Martians who tell him they like his films, 'particularly the early, funny ones,' before adding: 'You want to do mankind a real service? Modern mankind lost in a world of cubicles and right-angles. A film you can watch over and over - especially the 40-minute scene in which a restaurant devolves into chaos - because there's so much going on you simply can't take it all in in one viewing. Oh, and it's funny, too.

A favourite film a day for 365 days: Theatre of Blood.

Spurned Shakespearean actor revenges himself on the critics who attacked his performances - by copying the deaths in the very Shakespeare plays they criticised. Gruesomely funny horror comedy probably describes it best. (And it's an added pleasure to hear Vincent Price speak the verse so beautifully.)

John Candy's burnt-out air traffic controller takes a holiday in Florida, only to discover he's rented a tumbledown shack beside a public footpath. Awful 80s soundtrack and dumb jokes about fake boobs don't detract from a surprisingly touching comedy.

4 from Don Siegel. The original, and for me the best of the bodysnatchers movies. Creepy and unsettling, with an ending that still packs a punch. (And I don't mean the 'happy ending' tacked on by producers; I'm talking about 'You're next!')

I'm not a 100% Wes Anderson fan; sometimes I think he's too clever by half. And then there's Ralph Fiennes: his diction, the way he walks, his timing... one of my all-time favourite performances.

Hola! This is an #introduction for my #fandom account. One of those old millennials who wears their hair in a side part, and despite literally being from the region and in the culture, and raised on TVB serials, is aggressively uninterested in mainland dramas. (NiF was fine) currently getting back into Indian cinema, specifically the South, so any #Tollywood and #Kollywood recommendations are welcome!

Other than that, I'm a
#cinephile with little time and money and if anyone can point me to a copy of Jiang Wen's last most recent movie I would be deeply grateful. These days more of a casual MCU fan, and I can't keep up with #StarWars lore so... Let's say just the movies and that Kenobi series. Used to write for those. Used to write for Stargate too. AO3 is logged-in only, but here: https://archiveofourown.org/users/horusporus/works

Am here because I had wanted to wait till Tumblr joined the Fediverse, but then the app permanently enabled auto-refresh and I kept losing my place in the TL, so f that.

Also, in the last seven months I've been revisiting Tom Cruise lore (what). As a result I've now watched The Mummy (what).

I knew she would crush it playing a domestic helper and would keep up with #EvaGreen and #MarkStrong, both well-established European actors, in this Irish-Filipino co-production directed by #LorcanFinnegan. 1/2

A favourite film a day for 365 days.
Completely ridiculous and frighteningly believable all at the same time. Bob Hoskins and Derrick O'Connor steal the show as the last council repairmen you'd ever want knocking on your door.

Congratulations to Everything Everywhere All At Once for bagging the Oscar Best Picture Award as well as six other awards including a near-sweep at the acting categories!

This is also a well-deserved win for the indie studio #A24 which has produced some of the best movies in the last decade.

A favourite film a day for 365 days.
Throbbing headache, persistent cough, mild ache all over: perfect accompaniment for watching this film. A kind of of Sensurround. The ending *still* feels like being picked up and dropped off a cliff.

Finished watching The Banshees of Inisherin (available on Disney+) making it the 5th #OscarBestPicture 🎬 nominee that I've seen. The other 4 are Avatar 2, Top Gun 2, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Triangle of Sadness. Is it the best so far? Tough to answer compared to Triangle and Everything. But it definitely deserves its 4 acting nominations; Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan were all excellent! 🧵 1/2

I recently watched the documentary IS THAT BLACK ENOUGH FOR YOU?!? from Elvis Mitchell, and was reminded yet again that the 70s should've seen Pam Grier crossover to become an A-list Hollywood actress.

Bomb Magazine: Tangible Intimacies: Crystal Kayiza Interviewed by Jasmine Dreame Wagner

A short film follows the family journey of a young Ugandan American girl.

"I wanted to create a world where the kids could play, where we could peel off from the script and find improvised moments. These moments have become some of my favorite scenes."

Of the regular cinema releases in germany this year I have viewed 31 pictures – besides plenty of memorable retrospective screenings, home theater events and a lot of streaming stuff. And indeed, I also missed a lot.

So please take the following top ten not too serious, but I love lists too much. :mastoinnocent:
1. Vortex
2. Come on, Come on
3. The Worst Person in the World
4. Bones and All
5. What do we see when we look at the Sky?
6. Memoria
7. Ballad of a white Cow
8. Eo
9. The Tragedy of Macbeth
10. Everything Everywhere All at Once

And there would be much more worth to mention (The Power of the Dog, Drive my Car, Licorice Pizza, The French Dispatch, Belfast, The Card Counter, Nope, Triangle of Sadness …).

I also loved these two documentaries:
• The Alpinist
• Moonage Kingdom

Disappointments:
• Death of a Ladies’ Man
• Crimes of the Future
• Dark Glasses

What are your favourites?

As a Filipino #cinephile, Christmas is dreadful time because of the Metro Manila Film Festival. This "film festival" is as far removed from the likes of Cannes, Toronto, and Sundance as you can imagine. This is because no other films can be shown in local cinemas (save for IMAXes). Thus local studios usually use this theater monopoly to put out crap.

Local critic Phil Dy sums up the situation best in a viral Twitter thread from 2018: https://twitter.com/philbertdy/status/1076651981190524928

Cinephiles of Mastodon, one of you recommended me the book House of Psychotic Women and in case you come across this post I have to thank you. I’ve ordered it yesterday and I can’t wait for it to arrive.

I would like some more movie related books recommendations to maybe add to my collection one day.
