Attended a concert at the #NCH last night which featured #Beethoven as the meat in a #Haydn symphonic sandwich. I'm still figuring out what I like in #Classical. but the chamber orchestra (such as Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen was an ear-opener. I already appreciate early Beethoven e.g. Symphony No.2, and his Piano Concerto No.1 was very welcome. The two Haydn "London" symphonies were very different, No. 97 a bit experimental and No. 102 among his finest.

Am Sonntag ist der erste Advent, und zusammen mit meinem postcoronösen Rotzschädel erinnert mich das an den Lockdown 20/21… als ich auf Spenden-Basis ziemlich adhoc fünf Übernachtproduktionen machte. 'The Isle of the Dead' by Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943)
with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Vladimir Ashkenazy (Decca)

Tonight's music recommendation is this very haunting short piece inspired by a black and white reproduction of Arnold Böcklin's painting 'Isle of the Dead', which Rachmaninov saw in Paris in 1907. You can really hear the rowing of the boat in the music.
