I'm overdue for my bi-monthly ceramic work share (I just made that up, but it feels appropriate because I seemed to post here about once every other month or so).
And even though it's Pride month (happy #Pride to the whole #LGBTQ+ community!) I don't really do rainbow colored work. Mostly because I forget to set a piece aside for that sort of design until it's too late for Pride. Ha!
So I'm sharing this mermaid scale mug that I recently made. Why is it mermaid scale? I dunno. it sounds better than fish scale I guess.
Ceramic Specs:
Made: wheel thrown body, pulled handle
Clay: reclaim clay (mostly Aardvark Black Mountain and Laguna Soldate 60, with a little Laguna Rod's Bod)
Glaze: I have no idea. I am terrible at taking notes. Hahahahaha! I think it's a blue/black glaze with a wax resist design over it and then a dip into synthetic nuka. I should really take notes about my glazing.
Firing: Cone 10 reduction (~2350°F/1288°C)

One of the most amazing building technology, sidestepped and forgotten because of our addiction to cementeand concrete is rammed earth.
Ancient civilizations, built huge buildings using nothing but earth, either reinforced with hay, or simply pressed to create bricks that lasted centuries.
Ancient city of Bam in south central Iran and Saana in Yemen are examples of such amazing building method that helps keeping the interior cool in summer and warm in winter while it's beauty and simplicity made it last generation after generation.
Bam was almost completely destroyed after the devastating earthquake of 2003 and Saana is partially destroyed by almost decade long brutal war by Saudi and UAE against the people of Yemen.
There are people now who are trying to spread the knowledge about this cheap, reliable and beautiful way of building houses in warm climates. Combined with modern technology to use concrete foundation and use barbeife to reinforce the layers, these buildings can be made at a fraction of the cost of those using concrete blocks or bricks. Plus they have almost 0 carbon footprint and do not need any energy to process them before being pressed by hand or machine to create such magnificent beautiful walls. They are so beautiful that they don't even need paint.
It is possible to make them last longer by adding an extra layer of water proof plaster on top or just simply leave them as they are and they will withstand the rain and wind for many decades without losing their strength or beauty.

Even the bowl I made from wild clay. It feels unusually light tho, don't know what's up with that.
Quite a few pieces developed small cracks though, probably due to the very inconsistent wall thickness in parts. Might do it initial ramp up to 120c slower next time in case it's moisture related *shrug*
I'm working on a chess set - so far it's kitten and frog pawns, but I haven't decided on any of the larger pieces except some crows with crowns. I was going to make them the king and queen, then I went 'wait. Rooks'
So here's my brave little soldiers being glazed up. I only had an hour to work today so I was proud I at least got their eyes and noses and ears dotted and then I took the picture of what remained and saw 4 I missed.

Anyone on here familiar with different types of modeling clay? I could use some advice.
I'm looking to apply clay to a canvas to create large, dimensional pieces. (The canvas is 36" x 36") I thought Apoxie Sculpt might be the stuff but I guess it's hella expensive and I think I would likely need a lot of it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Found some nice wild #clay at the beach in Greece let's see if I can get it processed here and make some #ancientpottery.
Yesterday I went to my first pottery class (not first in my life though, I did some pottery in high school 15 years ago). It felt really, really awesome working with one's hands, in a group with others also working with their hands. My first creation will be a dip pen holder with a little ink jar. Next week I will refine it a bit before it goes into the kiln. Very therapeutic stuff.
I haven't decided yet on how do decorate it (I am heavily influenced by Grayson Perry nowadays).
I find it really weird how when you are dissolving #clay in water it dissolves way faster if it is completely dry then when it is still a bit wet
In our village there are woods and trails. I am a potter and sculptor and over the years have hidden little artworks here and there for the gnomes and fairies and elves to enjoy. I pulled this big carved bowl out of the kiln last week. My friend Etsuko fired it for me, because it didn't get into community firing.
It was fired once, but had some glaze issues (crawling) on the outside. So I took a risk and decided to apply more glaze to the outside and refired it. I normally don't do refires but I really didn't like the crawling.
The second firing result was fine, but not great. But most folks won't notice the outside like I do and it was acceptable enough for me.
Specs:
Clay: Laguna Soldate 60 stoneware
Made: Wheelthrown, then hand carved
Size: 10" wide x 5" tall
Firing: Cone 10 reduction (twice)
Glaze: Fake Blue Celadon first dip, and then Fake Bone Ash Nuka glaze on top.
Very old work, but I really like the atmosphere on this one 🎤

Cleaning this beautiful #clay #pottery #pipe we picked up a few years ago made by a local potter. It needed a cleaning, so I dipped it in some household vinegar for a few minutes and gave it a bit of a scrub. Good as new!
Photo descriptions: a series of four photos showing the pipe having a black tar inside the bowl, being dipped in a vinegar solution, and the final photo showing a beautiful clean pipe. The pipe is about 4 inches long and is a glazed white and gray with black speckles.
We drew little outlines of “ugly sweaters” and are trying out making coat hangers with copper wire usually used for jewelry. The idea is to then construct the sweater on top of the drawing with polymer #clay.
We were up last night looking at how to make different decorations with air dried #clay and polymer clay. Got all the tools prepared for some #making later today. Whilst she sleeps, I’m thinking about something to hack on. Have a #pygame release I’ve been procrastinating on for the longest time. Got to finish release notes! #python feels more like a trauma to the skull and not a fun-weekend-hacktimes though. Time to make #coffee and see where hacktime takes me!
