#clock project update: 5yo decided he wanted a new pattern for wake time: it should be a rainbow. Excellent, I thought, I've now got a way to test out patterns more easily. We settled on one... And then I realized that when I'd put the pico inside the clock, I hadn't left a way to re-flash it. So, open the clock... And today I learned about the rp2040 embassy_rp::rom_data::reset_to_usb_boot() function. Now I can tell it via telnet or USB to boot into USB storage flash mode. Learning (slowly)!

I wanted to rewrite the #TIX #Clock that I #programmed in 2008 into #JavaScript. But I saw that someone else managed to do it without me. lol

I’ve had this clock for a while: analog, windup. I think it’s from the 1930s/1940s?

Recently I put it here on my desk. It has to be wound-up 1x/day. It doesn’t keep perfect time, so occasionally I have to adjust it by a few minutes.

I like several things about it. The constant, quiet “tick-tock” is soothing. It has to be maintained daily, like a pet. It reminds me of my childhood, when all time was analog and our lives were not controlled by a digital reality.

#clock update: Nothing shiny to show off. But the rpi pico w's finally showed up, and now my little clock will join my wifi (hardcoded), ping an NTP server (hardcoded, no DNS), and set its clock appropriately, so - progress! And I can telnet to it to override the time to test things like the Halloween Pattern(tm).

It's really amazing how capable a $6 board is these days. 264kB SRAM! Don't even have to think about the network buffers. 1k here, 4kb there, whatever. 🤓

Ooooh I like it, I like it a lot 🤩 That was definitely a fun kit to built and it has a lot of cool effects and functions🤓

But on the other side it was also challenging. The main IC is super tiny an probably not solderable with an Iron. You have at least to use a hot air gun to get a proper result. Further a microscope 🔬 would be sometimes useful 😅

But all in all an awesome experience 🤩

When I was a kid, my dad had a late-1960s flip alarm #clock that became #unreliable, losing random amounts of time daily. He replaced it with a newish-at-the-time LED clock.

I went to the basement, took the flip clock apart, figured out how it worked, moved every moving part in it, and put it back together. Basically knocking the accumulated dust out of the mechanism "fixed" it.

I've been hooked on #fixing #things ever since. It's great.

12 should never have made it onto clocks.

Nothing personal against 12, it's just that 0 does the job so much better.

Currently times progress as:
1 AM, 2 AM, ... , 11 AM, 12 PM, 1 PM, ... , 11 PM, 12 AM
which any sane person can see makes no sense (unless you know what AM and PM mean - in which case it's just unsatisfying).

With 0 it looks like:
1 AM, 2 AM, ... , 11 AM, 0 PM, 1 PM, ... , 11 PM, 0 AM.

Much better.

This also makes 12 hour time line up with my beloved 24 hour time that labels midnight as 00:00 already.

Hmm, although I suspect alarm clocks are now obsolete (I bet you all use your smartphone), the cheap bedside #alarm #clock gave up the ghost... thinking I should get a steampunk-worthy mechanical alarm clock which requires winding and no electricity. Or a Nixie tube clock, but they cost a fortune now and I'd knock it off the table in the middle of the night while sleeping, step on it, stab myself with vacuum tube bits, and then shock myself with HV. So maybe not that.

I’ve written alternative texts for all clocks in the Pix Clock. I never really realised what fun it is to write proper alt texts. Even boring images can become very interesting if you take the time to look at them in detail.
