A vivd sunrise over a black, silhouetted suburban ridgeline.
Running along the bottom of the frame are the black outlines of trees, roofs, utility poles and wires, all following an undulating ridgeline. Immediately above them the sky is a fiery yellow and orange, the clouds lit up by the almost-risen sun. Higher in the sky again the clouds are more scattered, and variously dark grey, light grey and orange-pink, depending on their height and location. One band of cloud across the middle of the frame is a striking dark grey, contrasting with the orange below and pink above.

A dramatic cloudscape at sunrise in black and white.
Running along the bottom of the frame is a long suburban ridgeline in silhouette, with the outlines of trees and roofs. Two very large trees stand out at different parts of the skyline, each reaching up almost to the base of the lowest cloud bank, or so it seems. The sun has just risen, but is obscured behind the lowest, heaviest cloudbank, however its light is streaming both down and up, illuminating some clouds and throwing rays back towards the ground. Higher up in the frame there are dark wisps of low cloud, and behind them, much higher white cloud illuminated by the sun.

Abstract sunrise cloudscape

A series of thin, soft, horizontal clouds, partially lit by sunrise. Each cloud has delicate pastel pink sections, and smokey blue sections where the sun has yet to illuminate them. The overall effect is very like an abstract painting, with soft, fuzzy, elongated brushstrokes across the canvas, which is a very slight rose at the bottom grading to a light blue at the top.

Charcoal clouds drift across the bottom of the frame against a dawning sky, almost black against the delicate purple-grey gradient of growing light behind them. Most of the frame is just a wash of colour, lightest at the bottom left, where the sun will rise, and darkest at the top right. Almost invisible, two-thirds of the way up the sky, floating above the clouds is the tiny crescent moon, just a tiny silver sliver in the sky.

A sunrise, with suburban silhouette, a low bank of orange clouds, and an endless blue sky with a tiny crescent moon.
Running along the bottom of the frame is an undulating, distant silhouette of suburban trees and roofs, caught against the orange and yellow light of an imminent sunrise. Immediately above is a low bank of wind-spun cumulus, each a contrast in orange underneath and the east, slate grey on top. Above the glowing clouds the sky is all clear blue, deepening towards the zenith. Near the top of the frame, made tiny by the scale, is the crescent moon, bright side towards the unrisen sun.

The same sunrise as the previous image, but of just the narrow frieze of silhouettes on the horizon against the glowing orange clouds. The lower half is black, just the clear outlines of various trees, and roofs. Above, the sky is burnt orange and yellow, a suffused light from the indistinct outlines of the separate clouds.

A beautiful, cloud-filled sky greeted us on a balmy summer morning as we arrived at this secluded cove along the Intracoastal Waterway. Sailboats were anchored and just a couple of people were on deck to watch the sun come up. This is what getting up early is all about.

Dramatic thunderstorm clouds were dumping rain over the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico on this summer evening. Unfortunately, the rains were moving our way so we didn’t stay long but we did manage a few pictures before leaving. Love those clouds & the more dramatic, the better.

Apricot dawn sky

A dawn cloudscape, with only a tiny glimpse of sky in the bottom corner. The rest of the image consists of the shapes and textures of relatively flat and wispy clouds, either lit in varying hues of apricot by the rising sun, or still in dark, contrasting grey shadows. The overall effect, while recognisable as clouds, is a gently and organically textured abstract.

Apocalyptic dawn

A suburban skyline is seen across the bottom of the frame in silhouette: utility poles, wires, trees, roofs, a sparse and instantly recognisable outline. Behind and above it are rolling, low, angry red-orange clouds, an almost apocalyptic contrast to the mundane frieze.

#Skyline 185, a.k.a. yesterday morning’s sunrise, a beauty.

Pre-dawn sky and skyline, with crescent moon above. Nearly all the image is sky, which is dull orange on the horizon, grading through light blue to almost midnight blue overhead. The lower half of the sky is partly filled with several cloud systems which are different colours, shapes and textures, ranging from dull pink, wispy high-level clouds to dark grey, sharply outlined cumulus. The thin strip of land at the bottom is entirely dark except for the white dots of streetlights.

Study in blue, Sunshine Coast

Full moon rising over the distant sea. A high view over lower wooded ridges and a large dam out to the coast and sea. There is a sprinkling of lights along the sea's edge, otherwise it is dark, early evening, illuminated only by the full moon, which is partly obscured by a thin band of cloud. The view is framed on both sides by the silhouettes of much closer trees, their leaves slightly blurred by wind and long exposure. The entire scene, apart from the moon, is composed of different shades of blue.

A truly stunning sunrise vista. The bottom third of the image is a pre-dawn urban landscape of barely visible dark outlines of trees and houses rising up to silhouette on a distant skyline. Immediately above the skyline the sky is a dusty orange, but a little higher and the entire sky is covered in a blanket of almost flat and uniform cloud that is lit an intense, blazing orange. The cloud is sufficiently textured that small highlights and shadows delineate the texture, but the overall effect is of a radiant quilt thrown across the sky.

Sunshine Beach

Beachside seascape with the promise of rain or even a storm. In the foreground small, sullen green breakers run up almost to the photographer's position, while the sky is filled with grey, brooding clouds, both low scudding cumulus and higher cover. There is rain on the horizon, and although there is no direct sunlight, the sun is brighter in places through thinner high cloud, so that both sea and sky are are a study in contrasts. A lone swimmer can be glimpsed some distance out in the green, broken water.
