Let There Be Light

As high tide waves crash against the sea wall at Saltcoats on the Ayrshire coast, where the railway line runs the gauntlet of ocean storms, sunlight breaks through the grey clouds and creates a rich rainbow

#photography #coast #rainbow #storms #Scotland

Landscape format colour image showing the coastal railway line at Saltcoats in Ayrshire as the high tide and strong winds send waves crashing against the sea wall, and a brief moment of sunlight creates a rainbow which rises up behind the buildings bordering the railway line. Trains on this line regularly run the gauntlet of winter storms, with waves crashing over them.

Furnace Brook #Estuary in infrared
A long exposure with an #infrared filter renders the sky dark, the water smooth, and picks out detail in the sun warmed trees and #spartina. Taken at high #tide, looking northeast toward the outlet from near Merrymount Park.

My #photo. #Fujifilm #XH1 35mm/1.4 @ f/5.6 10 s ISO 200 Hoya R72 filter.

This wide-format monochromatic image captures infrared light with a digital camera. The blue sky is rendered as very dark by the filter, and it is being crossed by fluffy clouds especially at the left. In the middle left, the sun-warmed spartina and trees glow brightly. The trees and clouds are reflected on the still waters of the tidal estuary at high tide.

A couple of weeks ago today, it was the lowest tide of the year and on Sunderland's coast in North East England, I was able to explore these usually hidden kelp beds between Seaburn and Roker.
For most of the year, this is an area that's submerged and out of sight (unless you're a scuba diver), even at low tide.

In the North East of England, I'm a bit puzzled what sort of structure these old wooden posts on Seaham's 'Chemical Beach' in Co Durham were once part of – if I find out, I'll post the answer!

These rough steps lead down to the beach at Musselwick Bay, near Marloes.
As I was walking up them one day, I met a chap who said he'd known the guy who cut them. He was an elderly fellow, apparently, who would come down every day with a hammer and stone chisel, and work away till his chisel was blunt. In the evening, he'd sharpen his chisel again, ready for the next day's labour.
Now that is really public service at its finest...

Yesterday's photo was very recent, but today's is very old.
This one was taken in 1973, on Crete, with my very first SLR camera. It was before the days of digital cameras, or mobile phones, or even home computers, and I had only just taken my first plane flight.
Being able to post photos I took 50 years ago sometimes makes me feel quite old, but at other times the past feels like, well, just yesterday...

Goat Rock State Park

This is an image of Goat Rock State Park on the Sonoma Coast of California.
The foreground left of the image is the Pacific Ocean near the shoreline with some rocks sticking out of the ocean. From the bottom right of the image you can see the shoreline from the south. The shoreline wraps around to the left in the middle of the image on a small strip of land that leads out to Goat Rock. Goat Rock is a large rock formation that caps off this strip of land.
The Pacifi Ocean can be seen in the background along with the cliffs of the Sonoma Coast.

"Low Tide Treasures"

A detail of the Point Loma tide pools at... you guessed it, low tide, revealing beautiful rock layers and colorful rocks, smoothed by aeons of sand and waves.

The water is rendered very smooth from an exposure time of ~80 seconds.

At the bottom left is fine sand, on the right side smooth colorful rocks in the water. The water is rendered soft by a long exposure time. No sky is visible in the photo.

At Noses Point in Seaham on the Durham Heritage Coast this afternoon and a taste of the sort of weather that's been at a premium this 'summer'.
Magnificent views down the coast
to the distant profile of the North York Moors.
On a clear day, rising above Eston Moor, you can see the summit of Roseberry Topping near Great Ayton, North Yorkshire.

Personally, I always think it looks like a Jules Verne version of NASA's Apollo Lunar Landing Module (maybe that's where they got the idea!).

Framed print of an original oil painting by Steve Henderson depicting a mother and child at the beach. Both are standing barefoot in the surf, looking out into a turquoise sea on a sunny day. Both hold colorful fabric. The woman stands tall and strong like a goddess, with an orange piece of fabric in her left hand, and a rich blue aqua in her right. To her left, the young child also holds fabric, and it is obvious that she is imitating her elder.

Following up on yesterday's story about China's new battery-powered container ship, here's a recent Condé Nast Traveler article claiming that electric ferries are about to take over the world.

As someone who lives in a community accessible only by boat, I would love to see electric ferries and other forms of zero-emission waterborne transportation become more popular!
