I continue to work on the Eggcellent Adventure game, right now I'm in the code refactoring stage.
ChatGPT is pretty good at suggesting better naming for functions and variables. Also, I recommend "The Art of Readable Code" book, the best in the class (in my opinion).
After refactoring I want to use some code metrics tools to prove that you can create games with a small amount of clean code.

There is a huge difference in reading and understanding #code as well in writing code yourself.
I'm currently diving into a new software product with complete different concepts. I understand existing code but fail hard in writing new code myself … Very frustrating.
It is an open source product. But documentation is not very helpful. The code itself is also not helpful and doesn't integrate with state-of-the-art tooling. Feels like the beginning: Searching for something that does more or less the same, copy and paste, adapt and trial and error until you make it or give up. That's not satisfying.
Good software and products can only exist with good documentation. There are many ways to achieve good documentation. But one should apply at least one before trying to sell anything as a product or good software.
At least that's my current opinion …
"keep POLITICS OUT of CODE" I mutter as I remove all time zone handling #code from my projects.

Another crucial aspect in this matter of #AI rewriting your code:
You should make your tools reusable, so that others can benefit from it as well. This is not possible with #LLMs. Sure you can share the prompt, but the output is all wishy-washy.

What's the general etiquette if you find something open source (Apache 2.0) that doesn't really work has had no commits for a while and you "fix it" but also change how it works somewhat. Do you go back and propose your changes (even if it's quite a lot)? Do you put it out there separately? Don't want to step on any toes 🤔

It works! Nice 👍
Since i can not find a better way, its for me as perfect as it can get.
This brought me much closer to my goal. I would like to have something that can be used as a method return type, but maybe that’s not possible.
I found a workaround with your type and the`satisfies` keyword, though :)
@zyklop That's the gist! You want `type NoTrailingSlash<T extends string> = T extends `${infer _}/` ? never : T;`
It's not great to use, since you have to specify the type and value separately, but it _does_ work 😅

Something someone said to me at work bothered me today and I was hoping to get another view on this as maybe mine is not good.
"You're in your 30s now, its time to just stop coding and teach the younger guys and mentor people and take more of a high-level architectural view of things"
It really bothered me because I like to just code, I don't mind helping with some design decisions of course, but I don't want to just pack in coding and mentor all day... WDYT?
Sorry, but I have to add that it feels great to be nearly old enough for the senior discount and still be able to keep track of 30 thousand fucking lines of #code.

Everybody in #softwareDevelopment wants to scold you for deep nesting, but nobody complains about compound booleans.
A statement should not contain more than one boolean operator.
It's the #programming equivalent of a run-on sentence.
You'll split a whole block of #code into a function just to avoid an indentation but you'll write a statement with a ternary and a couple groupings? GTFO!

with all that said ... i am an eternal student, hungry for information on everything.
My range of emotions involving #coding this week have ranged from "I never want to do anything else for a living again other than #code" to "I never want to see another line of #SQL or any other #language again in my life.."
...of course it may have to do with the fact I've been working heavily in #legacy #ASPClassic code that is too big to replace easily this week..🤢
..I think I'm gonna take a break and code on my #python #framework and #fediverse app to get some mojo back this #Saturday
Which programming language considers that the programmer may not always have all the spoons and energy cuz "life" and taking care of fam? That a programmer isn't just ppl with lots of resources and time?
I've never asked this question before. Thoughts? What features would this language have? Hmm. 🤔
ADDED: Esp. what would make this lang better when reading other ppl's code? 🤔 Maintenance work, not just new stuff.

When you contribute to an #OpenSource project via #GitHub: please allow the reviewer of your PR — who asked a question or suggested a change — to determine when a conversation is "resolved".
Even if you're 100% sure you've fixed something as was asked, don't assume the person on the other end noticed. Better to tell them you've fixed it and have them close the conversation once they've had a chance to confirm that.
You don't need to rewrite the #code again and again in a short amount of time.
I don't know if you do this because of pressure from third parties/users so that the project always seems current in order to maintain relevance, but this is neither healthy for your project nor for your #mentalHealth.

I am a big proponent of a programming paradigm where writing code and building up relationships and connections leads to the emergence of new, unforeseen connections and avenues. Instead of leading you down the wrong paths and requiring rewrites, coding should sculpt and shape connections, offering surprising new connections for free. #software #code #programming #webdev #javascript

@robstyles You can do this if you use an interface:
interface Node {
[K: string]: Node
}
Interfaces behave differently than type aliases and should be preferred in most situations. Dan writes about why in his excellent book somewhere, I believe: https://effectivetypescript.com/
But note that it is indeed infinitely recursing, which can be a problem when inferring types. Which is why MongoDB for example limits recursion depth to 8, as seen here:
https://github.com/mongodb/node-mongodb-native/blob/main/src/mongo_types.ts#L452
