Most sort algorithms in the standard library require the source range to be a random access range.

However, the std::partial_sort_copy algorithm stands out from the pack as it can operate on input ranges.

Title: The Mysterious R-Tree Kingdom

[EXT. LAND OF OOO - DAY]

Finn and Jake are walking through the Land of Ooo when they stumble upon a peculiar forest that looks like it's constructed entirely of rectangles.

Finn: Whoa, Jake! Check out this weird forest!

Jake: (scratches head) Huh, it's like everything's made of rectangles or something. Let's investigate!

[INT. R-TREE KINGDOM - DAY]

As Finn and Jake enter the R-Tree Kingdom, they meet Princess R-Tella, the ruler of the kingdom.

Princess R-Tella: Greetings, Finn and Jake! Welcome to the R-Tree Kingdom, where we organize our kingdom and its citizens using the mystical powers of R-Trees!

Finn: R-Trees? What are those?

Princess R-Tella: (smiling) R-Trees are magical data structures that help us efficiently store and search spatial information in our kingdom. They're designed for multi-dimensional data, making them perfect for our geographical information system, as well as other applications like databases and computer graphics. You see, each rectangle in our kingdom represents a bounding box of an object or a group of objects.

[INT. R-TREE KINGDOM - ROYAL LIBRARY]

Princess R-Tella shows Finn and Jake an ancient book that explains how R-Trees work.

Princess R-Tella: (points to book) This ancient book shows us how R-Trees work. They're made of nodes that represent either the objects themselves or other nodes. The nodes are organized in such a way that they minimize the overlapping of bounding boxes. And although our kingdom uses rectangles, R-Trees can handle different shapes and dimensions too!

Jake: (intrigued) So, like, what's the deal with these bounding boxes?

Princess R-Tella: Great question, Jake! Bounding boxes are rectangles that contain objects or groups of objects. They help us manage our kingdom's space by organizing everything into a hierarchical structure. When we need to find something, the R-Tree allows us to search quickly by only looking at the relevant bounding boxes. To maintain its efficiency, the R-Tree balances itself, ensuring an even distribution of data across the nodes.

[INT. R-TREE KINGDOM - DAY]

Finn, Jake, and Princess R-Tella stand before a large diagram of an R-Tree, which visually shows how the nodes and bounding boxes are connected.

Finn: So, it's like a tree of rectangles that helps you find stuff?

Princess R-Tella: Precisely, Finn! And the magic of R-Trees is that they can adapt to changes. When our kingdom grows or when objects move, the R-Tree can adjust itself to maintain its efficiency.

[EXT. R-TREE KINGDOM - DAY]

Suddenly, the R-Tree Kingdom is under attack by an evil villain, Rectango.

Rectango: (laughs maniacally) I'll bring chaos to this kingdom by destroying its R-Trees and creating disarray!

Finn: (determined) Not on our watch, Rectango!

Finn and Jake team up with Princess R-Tella to defend the R-Tree Kingdom. Using their knowledge of R-Trees, they outsmart Rectango by efficiently searching the kingdom for his hiding spots and trapping him in a bounding box.

Jake: (laughs) Looks like we've got you boxed in, Rectango!

Rectango: (defeated) No! How did you find me so quickly?!

Princess R-Tella: (smirks) The power of R-Trees, of course!

[EXT. R-TREE KINGDOM - DAY]

After defeating Rectango, Finn, Jake, and Princess R-Tella celebrate their victory.

Finn: (smiling) Thanks for teaching us about R-Trees, Princess R-Tella. They're really mathematical!

Jake: Yeah, it's like a super-efficient way to search for stuff in a world of rectangles... or any other shape, really!

Princess R-Tella: (grateful) Thank you both for saving our kingdom! The R-Tree Kingdom will forever remember the heroes who protected its magic.

As Finn and Jake leave the R-Tree Kingdom, they wave goodbye to Princess R-Tella, knowing that they've gained valuable knowledge about R-Trees and their amazing powers.

[EXT. LAND OF OOO - DAY]

Finn and Jake head back to their Tree Fort, excited to apply their newfound knowledge of R-Trees.

THE END

Fellow developers, your job isn't going to be taken by AI, but it could be taken by a competitor of yours who will learn to use this tool to improve their productivity.

After taking the premium for this, I tried ChatGPT 4 last week and was amazed to see how it can fill in the blanks while working. I used to do it on Google and find the correct answer after browsing through dozens of wrong ones. But with this, I can set the context to be "Drupal 10" and all the suggestions and code it produces accordingly.

I may have written an amount of code in one day, which I usually do in a whole week -- and it was addictive to chat with an AI model and work in a direction for hours without losing the context.

I asked myself, "why would someone hire me and not someone else with a similar experience and who knows how to use it?"

I understood the need to know it, and I am starting to use it regularly for REGEX, open source code reading and understanding, refactoring of code, unit test and Behat test etc., and saving a few hours every day now. After years of practising manual work, they all feel like magic when done with ML's help.

It could be something else and not ChatGPT, e.g. CopilotX, but ML-based tools are changing the game, and we developers should also take the best advantage it brings.

Let's learn, adapt and evolve; that's the only way!

A typical pattern with legacy APIs is for the initializing function to return an opaque pointer that needs to be freed by manually calling a cleanup function.

std::unique_ptr can serve as a helper here, as it accepts custom deleters. Unfortunately, the interface is not ergonomic, which we can fix by introducing a short helper.

When developing a POC, the trickiest part is deciding when to push forward or when to slow down and refactor your code, especially when dealing with code and database structure that include a lot of duplication.

I tend to lead to refactoring on the fly.. especially early on in development.. but man it's boring... 😂

Email addresses can contain - and + and also . in the local-part (before the @ sign)! Honestly, they can contain nearly anything there, but those are the ones most likely to be incorrectly blocked as "invalid".

TLDs (.com, .org, .uk, etc.) can now include things like .ninja, .museum, and .apartments.

Coders - sorry, but especially men - please try to be more conscious of how you're phrasing things when in conversations about how easy or difficult concepts are, to people who either don't code or are brand new.

Phrases like, "I don't see why that's difficult to understand," or "that's just obvious," immediately (and often completely) knock down the courage of the person asking for help (or even someone just listening to your conversation).

What I am learning about using AI like Chat GPT or Bing for programming/scripting:

When a newbie user/programmer/scripter asks how to do something in a typical programmer chat forum (like discussions.apple.com, for example), one often encounters people wanting to teach lessons.

With AI you get a direct answer. It may need a little fudging things around, but it works, which is all I was looking for.

The C++23 added the std::spanstream, effectively a std::stringstream equivalent operating on a borrowed contiguous range.

std::spanstream can be used to directly parse text stored in raw memory, string_views or string literals.

When using std::spanstream for writing, the std::spanstream will write as much output as fits into the output span, which can be inconvenient.

Moving to a new server calls for a new #introduction...

I'm a principal #software engineer from #England working at #Mozilla.

I enjoy #coding, reading #ScienceFiction and #fantasy, #gaming and I periodically attempt to get back into #photography and generating #fractals.

Follow me to hear me ask dumb questions about tech I'm trying to learn or talk about projects I'm working on that will likely never go anywhere.

Why did the old IBM PC character font have a broken bar for the vertical pipe character? As they say: It's complicated.

People opt for the HTML elements vs drawing on canvas/SVG because they are concerned that those will complicate things.

I say, not necessarily.

For one of my problems, manipulating canvas, and using math ended up being so much more simpler.

And less bugs.

With the DOM, you're at the mercy of browser compatibility.

With Canvas, you have free reign.

Just be mindful of accessibility.

Perhaps, if your problem is too complex to deal with accessibility, then canvas might work. Maybe. But that's just my IMO #programming #coding #web #html #css #javascript

Question: Is this code gross?

<form @submit
.prevent="onShorten($event.target[0].value)">
<input v-model="link" type="text" placeholder="link">
<button type="submit" >Shorten!</button>
</form>

specifically, indexing into the target on event - bad practice?

Also if you know #vue and can tell me the approved way to get input data into an emitter so I can pass it to the parent component, PLEASE I BEG OF YOU
