From #FutureCrunch (and I quote)
"The UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment group has surveyed all the climate policies expected to be put in place in major economies between now and 2050, and they have concluded that global warming will peak below 1.8°C around 2050. 'This is a more optimistic future than many anticipate.' Yep"
The study investigated risk-taking behavior in recovered #COVID patients using the Iowa Gambling Test, and found that recovered patients exhibited higher risk-taking tendencies compared to healthy controls. This difference in behavior persisted in a 4-week follow-up and may be attributed to the patients overcoming the threat.

#ClimateEmergency #Collapse"There's a reason why Americans soothe themselves with dystopian fairy tales instead of reading about our history. When you read history, you learn the truth about collapse. You learn about police beating unpaid school teachers at the start of the Great Depression. You learn about the military shooting teargas at their own veterans. You learn about parents selling their kids to farmers because they couldn't afford to feed them."

That idea is crumbling to pieces before our eyes as we realise that we can’t stop our growth and nature is going to do it for us. Yes, we exploited planetary resources in ways no animal has done before, but in the end we’re still just another animal about to be shown the meaning of ‘carrying capacity’.

The idea that the modern miracle world we've created for ourselves, the system we participate in and rely on every day, is actually toxic and about to collapse, is not the kind of dysphoria or cognitive dissonance most people can tolerate. They prefer denial or ignorance or blind faith. It's much more comfortable... for now.

This from The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, University of Exeter:
This is collapse.
" In their 2013 paper, published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, illustrious climate scientist James Hansen and his colleagues showed that burning all fossil fuels would result in a 16C global average temperature rise. This would see the mean temperature of our world topping 30C, and would make most of the planet uninhabitable for humans. "

Being labeled a #climate "doomer" taking an "extreme" stance is a way to fend off the realistic assessment that #collapse of life sustaining systems might be more probable than not. The guy in this example imo argues reasonable and tries according to his conviction to cause as little harm as possible. That seems to be more useful than to assume there is still room to maneuver out of #catastrophe thereby prolonging the tendency to just wait and see.
That's not the worst part.
It's not the collapse.
It's not the death of our hopes and dreams. It's the fact that we're not allowed to grieve it and move on. Imagine trying to grieve the loss of a friend or a parent when half of everyone you know won't even admit they're dead. Imagine you're stuck in a real-life version of Weekend at Bernie's.
That's what we're doing.
The update on planetary boundaries is especially grim when you look at the time series.
«At 1.5°C of #warming, about one in twenty insect and vertebrate #species will disappear from half of the area they currently inhabit, as will around one in ten #plants. At 2°C, this proportion doubles for plants and #vertebrates. For #insects, it triples. Such high levels of species loss will put many #ecosystems across the world at risk of #collapse. We rely on healthy ecosystems to pollinate crops, maintain fertile soil, prevent #floods, purify #water, and much more.»
part of an interesting take on the near-future #collapse of so-called #Canada from https://www.thenation.com/article/environment/civilization-collapse-climate-change/
"Were this a one-time event, you could certainly say that Canada still remains an intact, functioning society. But given the likelihood that the number and extent of wildfires will only increase in the years ahead as temperatures continue to rise, Canada—hard as it might be to believe—can be said to be on the verge of becoming a failed state."
"If we don't do something drastic to stop it" says the scientist presenting computer generated graphs showing the march into #collapse if industrial civilization follows its trajectories. That was 50 years ago under the impression of "The Limits to Growth" published a year ago. What do we make out of dire warnings predicting catastrophe now, that we've arrived in the target zone? Reason is overrated, green #capitalism just a change of color, #fascism most likely the future.
Seeing 5,300 (WaPo) and 6,000 (Reuters) estimated rn for people killed in the #Derna flood. I think this is the dam that broke above the city. The Strange, Surreal Feeling Of Going About Your Day While The World Crumbles
The obligation of performing normality despite an acute awareness of just how not normal things are is enough to make anyone feel disconnected from “real” life. Especially, when such performance is motivated by a habitual lack of hope that anything can change.
Believe it or not, I worry a lot less about global warming than I used to. Instead I've begun to accept the fact that humans are deep into overshoot. We are like yeast in a bottle of grape juice, which flourish until the alcohol content kills them. We are turning ourselves into wine.
It's not just global warming that will do us in. There's also degraded farmland, empty aquifers, exhausted copper mines, acidic oceans... #Collapse is coming. The wine we're making will be rich in flavor.
I find this surprisingly freeing. The ultimate catharsis. I still try to live light on the earth, and I still want to destroy oil refineries. But I no longer believe success is possible, and I no longer feel anger at society or politicians for being short sighted.
Instead, I just savor the effort of trying, while marveling at the size of what's coming. Like a parent calmly stepping between a child and an avalanche.

We don't exactly know when or where it will start or how fast it will happen, but we can say with near 100% certainty that our complex modern industrial society is destined to collapse.
It's already begun, arguably, in some places. We can try to slow it down, maybe, or at least make the consequences slightly better for ourselves and for others around us, but we can't stop it.
Knowing this, Jessica Wildfire has some suggestions on how and why to prepare, and also how to think about what will inevitably happen to all of us at some point.
It's good to be ready for emergencies.
It's good to have food and water for yourself and your neighbors. It's good to have a backup power source. It's good to know how to change a tire. It's good to know how to get through a heat wave without air conditioning. It's good to know how to prepare for a storm or a flood. It's good to have alternate transportation. It's good to have outdoor camping skills.
It's good to have matches and a compass.
It's good to know first aid.
It's good to know how to garden. It's good to be okay eating rice and beans every meal without complaining. It's good to know just how much you can depend on yourself, and the limits to your own resilience.
The more I've learned about it, and the more I've read into the scope of our oncoming climate dystopia, one simple truth has been waiting down at the bottom. The best kind of prepping is emotional.
You aren't going to escape.
This disastrous summer has made one thing painfully clear. Nowhere on earth is safe from the consequences of climate change. If it's not wildfires, it's the smoke from the wildfires. If it's not drought, it's floods. You can build a community, but you also have to remember that it's hard to get along with people. They can be irritating, even when they're not batshit crazy. All we can do is be ready, and then be ready for when it's not enough.

A techno-optimist responded to my thread about societal collapse in the US by telling me how great things are now. Did you know we have smart phones? Did you know that goods and services are more readily available? Did you know things are getting better?
The critical corollary for any claim that things are getting better is “for whom?”
- Life expectancy in the US had been essentially flat since 2008 and has been declining since 2019, before the pandemic. It’s now about 76.4 years, erasing decades of gain.
- Americans are getting shorter. American heights peaked decades ago and have fallen both in comparison to other countries and absolutely, a sign of society-wide malnutrition.
- Nearly 2 million Americans are imprisoned and another 3 million are under supervision of the carceral system, the largest in the world.
- Fully 70% of Americans report financial stress and less than half have any emergency savings. Most people are one broken leg, busted furnace, or car collision from ruin.
But things are great! I have an iPhone! I’m richer than the kings of old!

The world has lost a third of its arable land due to erosion or pollution in the past 40 years, with potentially disastrous consequences as global demand for food soars, scientists have warned.
The continual ploughing of fields, combined with heavy use of fertilizers, has degraded soils across the world, the research found, with erosion occurring at a pace of up to 100 times greater than the rate of soil formation.
Collapse is not a dirty word
To assume our continued destruction of the planet’s life-supporting systems could lead to any other outcome than collapse is irrational

Will our own elites perform any better than the rulers of Chaco Canyon, the Mayan heartland, and Viking Greenland?
by Michael T. Klare, August 22, 2023
"The question today is: Will our own elites perform any better than the rulers of Chaco Canyon, the Mayan heartland, and Viking Greenland?
"As Diamond argues, each of those civilizations arose in a period of relatively benign climate conditions, when temperatures were moderate and food and water supplies adequate. In each case, however, the climate shifted wrenchingly, bringing persistent drought or, in Greenland’s case, much colder temperatures. Although no contemporary written records remain to tell us how the ruling elites responded, the archaeological evidence suggests that they persisted in their traditional ways until disintegration became unavoidable."
Is it possible that our super-advanced modern global civilization actually could collapse? Or is this just hyperbolic clickbait, intended for doom-scrolling?
Michael T. Klare is professor emeritus of peace and world-security studies at Hampshire College in Massachusetts. Most recently, he is the author of "All Hell Breaking Loose: The Pentagon’s Perspective on Climate Change."
In an essay published today, Professor Klare has a warning for us --

What environmental and climatic factors influence multidecadal fire frequency?
"The complex spatiotemporal changes in fire frequency quantified in this study, and the complex between-region differences in the factors associated with the number of fires, have major implications for biodiversity conservation, resource availability (e.g., timber yields), and ecosystem integrity. In ecosystems subjected to repeated fires at short intervals, new rapid detection and swift suppression technologies may be required to reduce the risks of ecosystem collapse as high-severity wildfires increase in frequency."

#Covid worst case scenarios
Are we as a group (#COVIDCareful) soft-pedaling how bad things could get? Certainly I don't see any experts putting their necks out there.
Recently a preprint came out that basically shows everyone infected has chronic T-cell activation years after the infection with very little attenuation with time past the acute phase. There's little difference between those with LongCovid and 'recovered'
Vaccination provides little to no help in this case.
If this is caused by persistence (likely IMHO), unless cleared it could continue forever, basically rendering *the vast majority of the population* immune-compromised.
How many years do we have before incidental infections kill the infected?
All indications are that repeated reinfections makes everything worse.
Do we even have 10yrs left??
The conspiracy theories are getting even crazier. Now people don't believe in viruses at all. They don't believe in polio. They don't believe in the flu. They don't even believe droughts are real anymore. They believe the government is hiding endless supplies of clean water deep underground. They believe the government is starting fires with space lasers.
