The guy in this example imo argues reasonable and tries according to his conviction to cause as little harm as possible. Believe it or not, I worry a lot less about global warming than I used to. Instead I've begun to accept the fact that humans are deep into overshoot. We are like yeast in a bottle of grape juice, which flourish until the alcohol content kills them. We are turning ourselves into wine.
It's not just global warming that will do us in. There's also degraded farmland, empty aquifers, exhausted copper mines, acidic oceans... #Collapse is coming. The wine we're making will be rich in flavor.
I find this surprisingly freeing. The ultimate catharsis. I still try to live light on the earth, and I still want to destroy oil refineries. But I no longer believe success is possible, and I no longer feel anger at society or politicians for being short sighted.
Instead, I just savor the effort of trying, while marveling at the size of what's coming. Like a parent calmly stepping between a child and an avalanche.

The more I've learned about it, and the more I've read into the scope of our oncoming climate dystopia, one simple truth has been waiting down at the bottom. The best kind of prepping is emotional.
You aren't going to escape.
This disastrous summer has made one thing painfully clear. Nowhere on earth is safe from the consequences of climate change. If it's not wildfires, it's the smoke from the wildfires. If it's not drought, it's floods. You can build a community, but you also have to remember that it's hard to get along with people. They can be irritating, even when they're not batshit crazy. All we can do is be ready, and then be ready for when it's not enough.

A techno-optimist responded to my thread about societal collapse in the US by telling me how great things are now. Did you know we have smart phones? Did you know that goods and services are more readily available? Did you know things are getting better?
The critical corollary for any claim that things are getting better is “for whom?”
- Life expectancy in the US had been essentially flat since 2008 and has been declining since 2019, before the pandemic. It’s now about 76.4 years, erasing decades of gain.
- Americans are getting shorter. American heights peaked decades ago and have fallen both in comparison to other countries and absolutely, a sign of society-wide malnutrition.
- Nearly 2 million Americans are imprisoned and another 3 million are under supervision of the carceral system, the largest in the world.
- Fully 70% of Americans report financial stress and less than half have any emergency savings. Most people are one broken leg, busted furnace, or car collision from ruin.
But things are great! I have an iPhone! I’m richer than the kings of old!
