This is my last quarter as a postdoc and lecturer at University of California, San Diego. Currently, I am teaching Math 146 Analysis of Ordinary Differential Equations.
I am giving the students an "oral exam" at the end of the quarter. They present for 20 minutes on a topic or problem from the course, and then for 10 minutes I asked about what they learned as well as their feedback and suggestions for future iterations of the course.
This has been very rewarding so far. One of the students said they enjoyed it but it would have been great to have such a meeting earlier in the quarter, and I agree. I did an oral feedback meeting (only graded for completion) last year when I taught intro to proofs, and I could have done the same for this class too.
I had thought (wrongly) that in an upper division course students would be more willing to ask questions and come to talk with me on their own in office hours, so that I would not need to explicitly create the time and expectation to have such a meeting. But I was wrong. If anything, the students in the upper division class were more inclined to work independently and reluctant to ask questions.
This makes me reflect on the way that previous courses had shaped their expectations about interactions with the professor.

I didn't hear it until about a year after that, my sophomore year of college when I was living with my pal Casper for a couple of weeks until we got assigned our singles (no roommates!). It was sort of a scam where you get put on the waiting list for a single room, so your parents didn't have to pay the extra money. Or something like that. We spent those two weeks taping each other's entire CD collection. I remember this album and Nanci Griffith's One Fair Summer Evening.

Maybe I'm burnt out because college propaganda cons entire generations of nerdy, shy children with a vague promise that you can make a living spending your energy on "research."
Then right before they kick you out and demand loan payments, the curtain drops and reveals that most "research" is actually just following endless, ridiculous demands from the parents of the types of people who bullied you in highschool, IF you can convince them to even hire you.
Most of these demands are around assessing the technical specifications of the masking tape holding together parts of this capitalist hellscape. Then they get angry when we advise that swapping out cheap, shitty tape for the masking tape is a terrible idea.

We have a new center to assist faculty with pedagogy, and the folks there keep urging us to “go where the students live”. And I’m really not trying to be an old curmudgeon about this, but isn’t the point of #college to expand the horizons of students? In other words, shouldn’t they come to where the professors live? I know that can be difficult at times, but isn’t that also the point?

My son is considering majoring in #UX in college. I'm very conflicted about it.
With the rare exception (e.g. Center Centre, SCAD), I have little confidence in schools' abilities to effectively train #UXDesign candidates.
I feel like he'd do better to take specific classes instead on HCI, cognitive psychology, research, graphic design, etc.

Try sci-hub if you're in school and need access to academic material behind a paywall and can't wait for the author to respond to an email. The URLs change every now and then because it's technically a pirate library that gets blocked every now and then. The site has probably been the most helpful resource throughout my academic career, and not enough people know about it.

Thankyou John. I think I've we get to a point where we are discussing something like this with no flak as would be expected in the other place, chances are we will be thinking out of date due to our age. I'm nearly 70 and find myself using #Mastodon to inform myself.
I have sat in front of many a TV show where people are discussing their #college options and finally think maybe I can just ask. So I have and the information I'm getting is amazing in the way it explains the stress #families go through trying to work out their ability to pay for college.
One #respondent talked about how some #institutions are cheaper for low income folks which again I found #instructive.

...must be gargantuan, the hundreds of thousands high-school #graduates that did not go to #college due to these prohibitive tuition costs, have cost the #US #economy dearly in know-how not obtained and lost taxes on higher incomes never earned.
