Almost a week ago I said I'm pausing #HowToThing for a while, but that doesn't preclude adding new examples regardless, e.g. this new one illustrating matrix-based image color adjustments (basic color grading) using floating point pixel buffers via https://thi.ng/pixel and color matrix building blocks (incl. concatenation to produce a single color transform matrix for an arbitrary number of adjustments) via https://thi.ng/color...
Due to lack of time and to keep it simple, there's no image chooser for now (though might still add one...)

I'm in a three-day training for Dolby Vision grading and mastering, straight from Dolby, and I must say it's very refreshing listening to a presenter who actually knows what they're talking about.
There are more than a few excellent sources of tutorials on #ColorGrading in #DavinciResolve. #CullenKelly knocks it out of the park on a regular basis. Part of the reason is a global approach that focuses on basics that will apply across an entire workflow so you don't wind up in the "corrections on corrections" scenario that eventually means starting over. This is a perfect example:

Aiyaiyai... It looks like if you "Apply Grade" from one clip to another in Resolve, it only copies all the tracking data if the new clip has been manually dragged into the timeline? But if you opt-drag duplicate a clip and conform lock that with the same new item from the Media Pool, then "Apply Grade" doesn't work and you have to use "Append Node Graph". So you could have two basically identical scenarios that behave wildly different depending on the activity history of each. :eyeroll:

Wow, DaVinci Resolve is way more buggy and frustrating than I realized, now that I'm getting in deep. I think it crashes at least once a day out of the blue, and I'm dealing with stuff like "no you can't copy and paste that node, you have to grab a still of the whole shot, go the other shot, and append (but not overwrite) the entire node tree, otherwise only 80% will copy."
Despite the wind today being bitterly cold and the sunshine all day being non-existent to milky - the sky definitely gave us a treat this evening.

Whenever anyone starts talking about color theory on YouTube, be wary.
If you are color grading your own media for personal distribution, don't get stuck in the technicalities. You are making art, and mistakes are where you learn.
If you are color grading for Netflix, consult actual experts and ignore YouTube altogether.

I somehow ended up down a video #ColorGrading rabbit hole. I need more monitors.
I love how older #film looks color-wise compared to newer film (which is more accurate), or digital. The colors in the old films is so much more natural and pleasing. Many times modern color grading just sucks, squeezing all life out of the footage. I wish more people used Dehancer.
