More expensive isn't necessarily better, even if it's from a well-known brand.

When I first got into interchangeable knitting needles, all I could afford were the cheap no-name ones.

More recently, as a need arose for duplicates in some sizes - combination of knitting husband and multiple projects underway at once - I thought I'd try upgrading with two cords and two sets of needles from KnitPro.

And I want to know: who thought it was a good idea to colour-code the needles AND the cords? I've got a faceful of clashing red and green before I even add the yarn colour/s to the mix.

I prefer my cheap no-name interchangeables, with their unobtrusive silvery-grey cords that (bonus!) don't unscrew while you're knitting. Next time we need more needles, I reckon a second set is the way to go - and it probably wouldn't even cost more.

For #SciArtSeptember Day 7: indigo a little story of analogy & bias in the most famous physicist of all. My lino block print is inspired by the earliest colour wheel, made by Isaac Newton. When he first split white light in 1665 into the rainbow spectrum of colours, he named & described what he saw as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (often denoted ROY G BIV).

Newton’s colour wheel: he displayed the colours Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet on a circle, and labelled the spokes of the cycle like the notes of a scale, the Dorian mode starting with D with no sharps or flats. He added orange and indigo where half steps occur (between E and F and B and C respectively). He labelled them in Latin: Rubeus, Aureus, Flavus, Viridous, Caeruleus, Indicus and Violaceus. I have added a musical stave and notes in a ring around the circle.

I really don't like reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, I much prefer good, old-fashioned brick.

You know where you are with a brick; they can last for millenia, they are easily repaired, they look good, they have character, and they are very sustainable.

You have to up to speed with the latest UK Goverment scandal to know what I'm talking about here, but you can still enjoy this crumbly old brickwork...

I have been taking part in #MinCup23 over on Bluesky but I think I will cross-post here too! Maybe sway some more votes?

I vote for great art or geophysics applications.

Sure, topaz is used as a gem, but Goethite (named for Goethe), has been used as a pigment from as early as the Lascaux caves! So Round 1 Match 6 vote Goethite over Topaz.

Polymath Goethe, incidentally, thought his Theory of Colours (1810) his most important work, hence my Fauvism-inspired print #sciart #colour #art #science

Image of a rotund beige horse outlined in black from the Lascaux caves below a chart of 15 squares of different mineral pigment colours in browns and black. 6/15 are due to Goethite.

My portrait is based on contemporary portraits, particularly a painting of Goethe in 1828 by Joseph Karl Stieler.

Why is luminance critical for reading?

A brief summary on LinkedIn, discussing why luminance, and not color, is critical for accessibility and visual readability.

https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:share:7104334044846309377/

#a11y #accessibility #typography #color #colour

Luminance is the achromatic black and white channel in our vision system. Luminance holds all the fine details, edges, and things like small thin text in a column of body text.

Color is processed separately, and later, about 70ms later. The color opponents hold a third to a fifth of the spatial detail of the luminance channel.

This is why luminance contrast is critical for reading.

I created the image using a bunch of pieces from MidJourney, trying to get MidJourney to do things like "a king with the head of a light bulb" seems to cause it cognitive dissonance. Instead, I'll break it down to "a giant light bulb" and "a king in a well lit ornate palace" and so forth. Then it's a matter of compositing in your fav photo editor.

Not sure how I feel about this thing. It’s the Munsell Colour Tree, created in the 1930s as a way to ‘quantify colour’ based on measured human visual responses to colour. But then, I’ve been conditioned to use the Colour Wheel, so maybe I’m just biased? 🤔

#art #colour

Munsell’s colour tree is an arrangement of circle segments around a central pole. The pole goes from black at the base, to white at the top. The lowest segment is values of blue, in steps up to the left, the colours go from blue, through purple and reds, to yellow-red. In steps up to the right, they go from blue, through greens, to yellow.

For the "it's the law tho" crowd, here's a fix:

APCA to WCAG 2 Backwards Compatibility Chart

For 4.5:1

Backwards 4.5:1 is achieved when:

IF the lightest color is darker than #d0d0d0
OR the darkest is darker than #595959
THEN Lc ±60 exceeds 4.5:1

ELSE Lc 72 or Lc -77 exceeds 4.5:1 in all cases

---
For 3:1

Backwards 3:1 is achieved when:

IF the lightest color is darker than #c4c4c4
OR the darkest is darker than #6c6c6c
THEN Lc ±45 exceeds 3:1

ELSE Lc 57 or Lc -63 exceeds 3:1 in all cases

---
Here's the implication:

If both colors are darker than #d0d0d0 or at least one is darker than #595959:

Then it's not a matter of "can you?" use APCA, it's a matter of you *should* use APCA.

For color pairs darker than #d0d0d0, WCAG 2.x contrast math results are not meaningful, and create inaccessible, often unreadable, color pairs.

Actual Accessibility is where it's at.

I am not in any shape or form a UI/UX/designer type person, mainly because I have zero talent when it comes to creating attractive visual imagery.

But I do have to create a lot of diagrams in the course of my work, and I frequently use colour to distinguish between otherwise similar items which behave in different ways.

I have just been reminded by a colleague that not everyone has the ability to see the full range of colours.

If your work (or hobby) involves using colour to distinguish between things, especially if that distinction is important, do try to remember that fact. This linked web page is really, really helpful when it comes to choosing a fully accessible colour palette.

Gondolas have existed since the C11th. They are always black. This is in consequence of one of the many sumptuary laws of Venice, forbidding showiness. Until the C20th, they used to have a sort of cabin amidships, with shutters that could be lowered for privacy. These were the original 'venetian blinds'. Apparently, there are only about 400 gondolas still in Venice, but it feels like more...

This picture is in square format.

And verbose, dense writing has occasionally created a barrier to understanding APCA, the accessible and perceptually uniform contrast method.

To make it easier, we've pared things down to bare essentials and placed them in a linktree.

Gray, darker gray, even darker gray, anthracite… I think this is a worrying and growing trend in the use of #color in #architecture. New #buildings , #building extensions, paintwork, facades, shop windows, even new public benches and other street furniture is often in one shade of grey, at least here in the Netherlands (the photo was taken near me). But as I recently found out on holiday in Scotland: also there. Is this a global trend? Let’s not forget about #colour ! #architecturephotography

LEGALLY READABLE (a thread)

APCA is not official per WCAG 3 yet, as WCAG3 is undergoing major changes, particularly to the conformance model.

However APCA is also an independent standard as part of the IRT-RC (Inclusive Reading Technologies Readability Criterion), this is useable per the public beta, and comments are encouraged.

In the majority of the world in most contexts, WCAG 2.x is not strict "law" and designers may use alternate standards. Including the USAB-508 under the "alternate facilitation" rule. (Regions or contracts vary so determine your requirements).

Considering the serious flaws in WCAG 2.x contrast, those who can should be encouraged to use standards that promote actual accessibility, such as APCA/IRT-RC.
