Today in Labor History November 8, 1923: Hitler led a failed coup d’etat in Munich, known as the Beerhall Putsch. Inspired by Mussolini’s march on Rome, roughly 2,000 Nazis marched on Munich, but were repelled by police, who killed 16 Nazis in the process. Hitler escaped, wounded, but was eventually caught and imprisoned. The putsch brought Hitler to the attention of the German public for the first time, and his trial gave him his first significant public platform. In prison, he dictated “Mein Kampf” to fellow prisoners, Rudolf Hess and Emil Maurice. Nearly 11 years later, on May 2, 1933, in one of his first acts after coming to power, Hitler abolished all labor unions. Storm troopers occupied union offices across Germany. Union leaders were arrested, beaten, tortured and imprisoned, or sent to concentration camps. In the coming months, thousands more communists, anarchists and labor activists were arrested and murdered.

For Alexandra Elbakyan, Sci-Hub is in essence #communist. ‘We must move from the concept of “intellectual property” to the concept of “intellectual communism” when knowledge and information are free and belong to everyone.’
Granted, she describes #scihub as ‘so far the most radical, and .. most successful, take on #openaccess’. Still, is there an argument Sci-Hub is not actually about ‘genuine’ OA. Not if the latter is understood conservatively in terms set by:
1) the ‘big publishers’ and other gatekeepers (funders, government, REF): the citation advantage, metrics, competition with non-OA publications, as @jonny says;
2) the academic profession: individual recognition, reputation, visibility, esteem, symbolic capital, promotion, career progression.
Those may be the criteria Abdelghani Maddi uses to evaluate Sci-Hub:

Today in Labor History October 24, 1947: Walt Disney testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee, naming many of his own employees as communists, including Herbert Sorrell, David Hilberman and William Pomerance, because of their activism as union organizers. In 1993, the New York Times wrote that Disney had been passing secrets to the FBI from 1940 until his death in 1966. In return, J. Edgar Hoover let Disney film in FBI headquarters in Washington and made Disney a "full Special Agent in Charge Contact."

Aided by a corrupt #autocracy, it received little pushback over decades of economic #exploitation.
"But in the 1940s, a democratic revolution and calls for #justice threatened to undermine United Fruit’s position. So the company leveraged its powerful connections inside the White House — painting the new Guatemalan government as a dangerous #Communist administration in the process.
As a result, the #CIA launched Operation PBSuccess: a sweeping coup that destroyed the country’s #democracy, installed a #dictator, and sparked a decades-long #CivilWar and #genocide of the #Indigenous #Mayan people."

I found this overview and history of the #French #Communist Party (#PCF) quite good, but I'm also not very knowledgeable about it to begin with, so let me know if/where it misses or gets wrong any part of the story.
I find the life of political parties interesting. Why do they succeed and why to they fail? The PCF is a great study in that regard, IMHO. A lot of lessons to be learned.
Brazilian architect, Oscar #Niemeyer, designed the French Communist Party Headquarters building in #Paris. Designed in 1966, construction began in 1968. It was inaugurated in 1971 but its external dome was not fully completed until 1980.
IMHO, this is a truly amazing building (although I've never visited). Stunning in so many ways.
Perhaps most striking today is to consider how big the #French #Communist Party was at one point.

I recently read "The Revolutionary Science of Marxism-Leninism" by J. Sykes, published by #FRSO (Freedom Road Socialist Organization) and I found it to be an excellent entry-level text to #ScientificSocialism. It's very approachable and easy to read for any leftist and, I believe, is quite persuasive in it's argument for embracing #DialecticalMaterialism and #HistoricalMaterialsm as primary ways by which to understand and change the world. Sykes also describes the #Leninist form, organization, and inner-process of a #communist party and how that can be an effective strategy for seizing and maintaining working-class power (the #DictatorshipOfTheProletariat) as we advance into the #socialist stage of human development. Those are perhaps the most commonly expected and basic topics, but he also delves into the #MarxistTheoryOfKnowledge, #PoliticalEconomy, #Imperialism, the #NationalQuestion involving the oppressed nations within the US, #WomensLiberation, and #QueerLiberation. I think this is a must read for anyone who considers themselves on the #Left and desires a deeper understanding of our world!

If I was a #parent of a #school aged #child I would be moving my family out of Florida.
Teachers in Florida are now under threat of a 3rd degree #felony if they allow access to any book not on the specifically state-allowed books for kids to read. According to the comments I have seen from several teachers, this list is next to impossible to obtain - so they are having to remove everything but textbooks from their classrooms.
This is oppressive dictatorship stuff. These people love calling everyone else "communists" but this is exactly the sort of things that #communist rulers have done in China, Russia, and North Korea.
