Logging Bellingen's biodiversity

Bellingen is being hit by an 'infrastructure tsunami' (William Laurance) this year. Rural country roads are turning into a highway like network. Gleniffer Road is made 'logging ready' and Roses Road gets a daily smear of toxic coal-tar to take the added heavy vehicles.

Gleniffer Road infrastructure cuts through native ecosystems for human convenience. The road is designed solely with fossil fuel traffic in mind. Getting motorists from a to b in the fastest way and getting massive logging machinery into the remaining (Tuckers Nob) forest. Fossil fuel free mobility of humans and non human animals never entered the design considerations.

The habitat of the more-than-human assemblages is fragmented and degraded. Peri-urban sprawl (roads, cars, houses, dogs & cats) further poses a threat to wildlife.

It's estimated that 10 million Australian animals are killed on roads by (signage blind) motorists. For a country with one of the highest rates of animal extinctions in the world this is a lot of biodiversity to sacrifice. The maimed and dead seem to be an accepted 'side effect' of this mobility.

From the public roads the Forest Corporation cuts a labyrinth of logging roads (fishbone pattern) into the heart of the forest. Massive fossil powered machinery is then set to work to clear fell Australia's biodiversity.

Noise pollution, toxins from tyres and exhaust fumes poison freshwater ecosystems, the soil and the air. The survivors of the roadkill and deforestation carnage have nowhere to go. Birds fall silent.

The kite on the left is gliding, wings outstretched, looking down towards the ground. The one on the right is stooping, its back is visible and its beak is open in a screaming whistle. The feathers on the underbody are speckled red/brown and white, with white flashes near the wingtips. The beak is curved and obviously that of a raptor. The plumage on the back is a rich, patterned rust colour with white feather tips and a forked tail.

I am just incandescent with rage over the Save the Redwoods League and their active role is robbing us of redwoods and other heinous behavior, thanks to Greg King’s book The Ghost Forest: Racists, Radicals, and Real Estate in the California Redwoods. https://calmatters.org/commentary/2023/09/greenwashing-sacrificed-california-redwoods/ #conservation #nature #redwoods #bookstodon

The penultimate nadir of this long running sleight of hand began in the 1960s, when Save the Redwoods League successfully derailed promising efforts by the Sierra Club to create a Redwood National Park on Redwood Creek. The Sierra Club wanted to preserve the entire lower half of the 180,000- acre watershed from ridge to ridge for 22 miles, protecting nearly 40,000 acres of old- growth redwood. The League actively lobbied in Washington, D.C., against the club's plan, instead advocating for taking the northernmost redwood state park, Jedediah Smith, adding a small amount of old-growth and thousands of acres of cutover land, and making that into a Redwood National Park.
In 1993, Save the Redwoods League finally injected itself into efforts to save Headwaters Forest. That year, California Congressmen Dan Hamburg and Pete Stark submitted the Headwaters Forest Act. The legislation would have preserved 3,000-acre Headwaters Forest and 36,000 acres of surrounding forestland, which included an additional 1,600 acres of ancient redwood that stood in four scattered groves. Save the Redwoods League set out to kill the bill. League executive director John Dewitt publicly derided the bill as "fatally flawed." He said fighting over Headwaters Forest was like "debating the value of the last few gold bars to come out of Fort Knox." He tried to strongarm members of Congress into defeating the bill.

In 2022, Dr. Jäger announced that he had named a genus of spiders after the music of David Bowie, adding 54 new species including Bowie ziggystardust, Bowie majortom and Bowie heroes, the latter referring to ground-dwelling spiders from the Himalayas, Papua New Guinea and northern Australia.

“We only protect what we know — and an attractive name is much more likely to be remembered,” he said.

Dr. Bonaldo said that his favorite unique names include Strotarchus beepbeep, a fast-moving spider named after the Road Runner cartoon from the Looney Tunes series, and Myrmecium oompaloompa, which mimics ants and can be found in cocoa plantations in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

TEXT READS: There are over 100 IIAs in England, Scotland and Wales, from tiny Lundy and Great Orme, through to expansive well-known landscapes like the South Downs, Cairngorms and Snowdonia. All of them are home to special species or assemblages of species. They deserve to be protected and managed in the right way to enable their wildlife riches to survive and thrive.
TEXT READS: Supporting the recovery of invertebrates can be complicated – there is a huge diversity of species, all with different lives, different ecological needs, and different distributions. One aim of the IIAs is to make this easier; taking complex technical information and translating and distilling it into a format which is both accessible and useful.

TEXT READS: Important Invertebrate Areas (IIAs) are places that are home to nationally or internationally significant invertebrate populations and their habitats. They are the best places in Great Britain for our invertebrates, which have been identified using the most up-to-date data available from over 80 national expert recording schemes. They support some of our rarest and most threatened species, vulnerable habitats and unique assemblages of invertebrates.

Beautiful damage in a copy of Theodosian Code (Lyon, 6th century). #MedievalManuscripts #Manuscripts #Parchment #LegalHistory #HistoryOfLaw #Conservation #oops
@bookhistodons @medievodons

Photo of a leaf from a medieval manuscript: folio 3 recto in Bibliothèque nationale de France, Manuscrit latin 9643. The page contains 29 lines of Latin text written in a clear hand using dark brown ink, plus a modern institutional stamp in red ink. The parchment is of poorer quality with sizeable holes around which the scribe has written. Compounding this, the fore-edge is torn or eaten away and bears translucent blue stains, some extending nearly to the middle of the page, perhaps caused by deterioration of some reagent applied to protect the fore-edges of the leaves or to improve legibility of the text in already-damaged areas. Where the stains appear, the ink has darkened and some show-through from the other side of the leaf is apparent.
Photo of part of a leaf from a medieval manuscript: folio 6 recto in Bibliothèque nationale de France, Manuscrit latin 9643. Visible are 27 lines of Latin text copied in a clear hand in dark brown ink; the scribe has written around a large hole in the parchment. The fore-edge of the leaf is torn or eaten away and bears translucent blue stains, perhaps caused by deterioration of some compound applied to protect or treat the damaged leaves. Where the stains cover the writing, the ink has turned dark blueish-black, and the offending chemical could have been applied to enhance legibility in these regions of the leaf.
Photo of part of a leaf from a medieval manuscript: folio 17 recto in Bibliothèque nationale de France, Manuscrit latin 9643. Visible is an enlarged heading copied in brown and red ink, followed by 7 lines of Latin text written in a clear hand using brown ink. This is followed by a sizeable blank space, then another enlarged heading in brown ink. Below it run 5 lines of text written out in red and brown. The fore-edge of the leaf is partially torn or eaten away and bears translucent brown and blue stains, perhaps from chemicals applied to protect the parchment or treat some issue with it.

The Netherlands is one of the smallest countries in Europe, but also one of its biggest food producers and exporters, thanks to a wildly successful intensive agriculture sector.

With the highest density of livestock in Europe, the Netherlands has been in the throes of a years-long crisis over nitrogen emissions from manure, which ecologists say are destroying the country’s ecosystems.

Environmentalists condemn Australia’s ‘woeful record’ after 48 plants and animals added to threatened species list

“This many species being added to the list in one go is a sign of widespread ecological collapse,” Tim Beshara of the Wilderness Society.

“Australia has a woeful track record when it comes to protecting our unique animals and plants. We are a world leader in sending mammals to extinction – and it is mostly because we keep allowing their homes to be bulldozed, logged and overrun,” Nature campaigner Jess Abrahams

“We need stronger laws to protect these species and significantly more funding to do it with."

I think a lot about the interconnections and causes of increasing #natureBlindness and #historyBlindness, as I encounter it especially in social media in *all* educational levels. About the consequences and the possible ways out of this dangerous dilemma.
If you know of any enlightening and inspiring articles or books on the topic - I would be happy to receive links.

Forestry Corporation's logging operations halted in Tallaganda State Forest, glider found dead
"After discovering a dead endangered marsupial, Forestry Corporation NSW (FCNSW) has been issued a stop-work order in a state-owned forest near Canberra".

"EPA investigators discovered a dead southern greater glider beside a logging area within the Tallaganda State Forest. This habitat is ground zero in the race to save this critically threatened species," she said. WWF conservation scientist Kita Ashman"

Prehistoric bird once thought extinct returns to New Zealand wild https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/29/prehistoric-bird-once-thought-extinct-returns-to-new-zealand-wild Eighteen of the birds were released in the Lake Whakatipu Waimāori valley, on to slopes they had not been seen roaming for about 100 years 🌏 #NewZealand #Conservation

Photo of a Takahē. “They’re almost prehistoric looking,” says Tūmai Cassidy, of Ngāi Tahu. “Very broad and bold.” Front-on, their bodies can appear almost perfectly spherical – coupled with the blue-green plumage, they look like a model planet Earth perched atop two long, bright red legs.

Council introduces laws to help protect endangered koalas from dogs

"Dog owners living in parts of the Gold Coast must now follow strict rules or face fines under tough laws designed to keep koalas safe...New laws in a Queensland city mean people who live in designated koala habitat area must prevent their dogs from attacking the animals, by providing a range of options so the marsupials can enter and escape."

"Each year, probably about 100 koalas get taken into animal hospitals … due to dog attacks, around about 75 per cent of them die — so it's a major issue."

"The proposed new laws have been designed to help protect koalas by ensuring dog owners in designated koala areas provide koala-friendly backyards"
