Here is a medallion for #MedalMonday commemorating King Charles III's coronation which was three months ago on 6th May 2023. I know it's a commemorative "trinket" but I do really like the coronation emblem and the king's cypher, so, I'm happy :) But what is the difference between a monogram and a cypher? Find out at: https://coinofnote.com/king-charles-iii-coronation-medallion/ #King #KingCharles #KingCharlesIII #Coronation #Cypher #monogram

Coronation Emblem side of coin in card next to coloured cypher on card and text underneath reading "The King's Coronation . 999 Silver-plated commemorative
Coin showing King Charles Cypher in card with the limited edition number #2666 / 9999 and the specifications Diameter 32mm, Weight 9g, Plating .999 Silver, Finish: Proof like
King Charles III coronation emblem: https://www.royal.uk/coronation-emblem

The emblem pays tribute to The King’s love of the natural world, unifying the flora of the four nations of the United Kingdom; the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales and the shamrock of Northern Ireland. Together, the flowers create the shape of St Edward’s Crown, with which His Majesty The King will be crowned during the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, 6th May. The emblem has been designed using the red, white and blue of the union flag.
King Charles III Cypher - https://www.royal.uk/his-majesty-kings-cypher The cypher is the Sovereign’s monogram, consisting of the initials of the monarch’s name, Charles, and title, Rex – Latin for King, alongside a representation of the Crown.

Une belle série de Cartier-Bresson sur les personnes venues voir le cortège de George VI le jour de son couronnement en 1937 :bigcrown: 🇬🇧

Photographier le peuple et non le roi…

Et avec quel regard ! 🤩

#HenriCartierBresson #expo #exposition #photographie #photography #couronnement #Londres #Angleterre #RoyaumeUni #coronation #London #England #UnitedKingdom #GeorgeVI #FondationHCB #Paris

In Hinterzimmern. Aktuell das BtmG, bzw. CannaG.

Und wer kommt in Hinterzimmer? Lobbyisten.

Wer steuert Deutschland?

Alles Alternativlos?

Von derLeyen, die ganzen Berater. Die wurden bezahlt, damit die Gesetze schreibe. Alte, weiße Männer aus der Wirtschaft.

Alle korrupt. Lindner und Porsche, die ganze CDU, alle. Wer ist frei vom Kapitalismus?

Man called Charles handled record haul of stolen goods in Scotland
He then declared himself "king"

Yesterday, King Charles “received the crown jewels” in Scotland in what legal experts are calling the biggest example of handling stolen goods in human history. This was Charles’ second coronation of the year, but he was quick to point out it was just a “mini-coronation” because he is exceptionally humble.

This detail about Charles 2nd #coronation in #Scotland is straight-up hilarious

‘When Britain became a protectorate under Cromwell, England’s crown Jjewels dating to medieval times were melted down along with other royal regalia. In Scotland, however, the crown jewels were hidden away so carefully that they were rediscovered only a century and a half later in 1818, when novelist Walter Scott found them in an oak chest in Edinburgh Castle.

When the King of Scots arrived in London in 1274 with 100 knights on horseback to attend the coronation of Edward I and Queen Eleanor, the horses were given as a gift to anyone who could capture one.  Not to be outdone, the earls of Gloucester, Pembroke, and Surrey and 100 English knights gave away their horses as well.

The pomp, circumstance, ceremony, and lavishness of the #Coronation made sense when it marked the ascension of a new Head of State for a leading world power. But with post-Brexit Britain being relegated to 2nd division middleweight power, it comes across as Ruritanian flummery.

An absolutely devastating testimony from #Republic CEO Graham Smith to MPs:

• Every detail of plans given to police in advance.
• Not a single email, text message or email suggesting that Republic would do anything unlawful or disruptive.
• TSG officers forcibly stopped Smith from phoning his liaison officer to clarify the situation before arrest.
• Police claims made to MPs "partly untrue."

Regarding your recent coverage of the coronation and the cost of the crown, our local food bank supported about 760 people last week out of a population of about 10,000 in the local area. In recent years, the food bank has used grants from the national lottery to support its activities, but recent applications for funding have been unsuccessful. They have been told that much of the funding is going to events celebrating the coronation.

While it is a massive indictment of our government that so many people are driven to need this help, it is also a sad reflection of how out of touch our monarchy is, that the coronation of a man worth £1.8bn will indirectly result in so many people going hungry. Jonathan Holt

Should clarify, this was a street party for the coronation rather than a party celebrating Coronation Street.

An unexpected series of events culminated in me calling a round of bingo at a coronation street party this afternoon. Turns out "lucky for some, 69" is a touch risqué for rural Leicestershire.

My brain keeps conflating "coronation" with "coronary", but considering both involve an unhealthy buildup of gunk in the heart of a body, the association does not seem entirely inapt. #coronation

So, after some reflection my view on the whole #coronation thing after yesterday is that it is time for the monarchy to change or die. People need to be convinced of the value of the exercise rather than just be expected to accept an eternal monarchy which officially rules the country by divine right. That "D.G." on the coins doesn't mean "Director General" (I think that in the case of Andrew it means "Dirty Genitals", but let's not go there).

The whole anachronistic thing with dozens of dress-up costumes which haven’t changed in a century or more despite having previously changed regularly in response to fashion is just weird, and in the era of HDTV it just looks like stuff from a rep theatre’s wardrobe that's had a dry-clean and a darning. That’s the reason Penny Mordaunt stuck out so much - she’d actually stuck her neck out and insisted on a modern look rather than buckled britches and stockings. These things always *used* to change, and just think how different it would have looked if young British designers had been allowed to have a go. You can't modernise when the king is getting crowned in his grandfather's jacket, which in turn looked like it did because that was what *his* grandfather's jacket had looked like. And for the younger generation, nothing said "business as usual" quite like Kate's outfit.

The striking lack of humility in the proceedings as a whole (with the exception of a bit of a tip of the hat to God as possibly outranking them) is just in poor taste in 2023. Seeing the Speaker of the House of Commons - the most obvious governmental link between the people and the Crown - show up in buckled britches with a frickin' TRAIN that required someone to hold it was as big a reminder of the "know your place" mentality as you'll ever see.

The Royals either need to modernise in the same way the other European royals did or leave and live off their immense personal wealth. But abolishing the monarchy right away and now also terrifies me as the current political system is just not mature enough to ensure that if given the chance to elect a head of state people won’t pick some dickhead like Nigel Farage or whichever minor reality TV star gets the most phone-in votes. There needs to be a lengthy political process of electoral reform and an end to the democratic deficit of FPTP combined with a simple Commons majority effectively granting governance without accountability before the country is ready to have conversations about exactly which person acts as the mostly-figurehead head of state.

Worse, the demands would almost certainly be for an executive-heavy presidency rather than the adult supervision model because everything has to be just like America - generally a bad idea in the 21st century. Macron only has as much power as he does because De Gaulle wanted that power for himself, not because the people granted it to him. Elsewhere in Europe, presidents as head of state have strictly limited and codified roles and powers while also being able to act as a safety valve if the government goes nuts. The UK doesn't have that safety valve function, which is why the current system is so damn dangerous and open to abuse.

Ultimately, though -- it’s all in the hands of the government of the day. If Rishi Sunak wanted to change the way the royal family operates (autocorrect originally had that as “opiates”) he could do so simply by changing the government’s standing “advice” and legislating where necessary but of course he won’t. When it comes down to brass tacks the monarchy is at the mercy of Parliament, because that's how the constitutional settlement works. When the government says jump, the Palace says "how high?". If the royals were told they had to start living entirely off their private estates or stop being royal, they'd choose the private estates in a shot. But this never happens because the ability of British society to circle the wagons when anyone suggests keeping the Royals in check is almost unparalleled.

Few populations have the levers to change their government wholesale so easily accessible - it's just a Commons majority away! - but even fewer populations think that the idea of even *touching* the levers is heresy.

Extract from an email sent by Graham Smith of Republic:
"Our arrests have been covered around the world and by all UK media outlets. It has been noted by a lot of observers that Charles has remained silent and has not made any effort to defend our values and liberties.

***Republic has also seen a huge influx of members, supporters and donations."*** 👊👊🥳

Being #British is standing in the wet to see a rich man go past in a golden carriage then leaving all your trash there for the Londoners you slag off for being unwelcoming to clean up.
Here's some advice lads, don't come back to our City until you've learned some fucking manners. 😡

Graham Smith and the other #Coronation protestors from Republic should never have been arrested.

The #PublicOrderAct is an assault on democracy.

Royalists. Who turned out in their thousands to watch the king get coronated (is that a word?) .

Who love their king and country.

But not enough to clean up after themselves.

As an anthropologist, for me one intriguing aspect of the #coronation was that, of course, #Charles3 studied #Anthropology himself. The first time perhaps that an anthropologist designed and was the central figure in a power ritual all about himself!
Ring, globe, golden cloak and all 😊#EmperorsNewClothes

A screen shot i took during the coronation of Charles 3 sittinng on throne with croen on head in golden cloak, buldging out a bit in the biddle, holding teo sceptrers, surrounded by bishops. Charles himself looking a bit forlornsomehow.

I like this take on the #coronation by @Pwnallthethings but my conclusion is slightly different, how about a nominated president from an elected (by PR) second chamber?

i've been trying to understand the american (media's) obsession with the british royal family.

i haven't found my answer but as i poke about, i at least came across this interesting rationale for the royals' existence.

The #Coronation today features spectacular music, including Parry’s “I Was Glad” and Handel’s “Zadok the Priest”, both written for previous Coronations, plus many commissions by today’s leading composers.
