A couple of people visiting the weekend property up the road knocked on the door this evening to tell me they’d found an injured lamb caught in the fence. So I grabbed a few things and followed them on the quad bike.

Turned out they’d already freed it from the fence and it hadn’t been able to stand up and walk away. Bad sign. Worse sign: maggots in a large wound behind the ear.

Me: oh no, I think the poor thing’s done for
Visitor, plainly too invested in this rescue: why can’t you just get the maggots out?
Me: ummmm

Guess who just spent half an hour with a head torch, a bottle of antiseptic, and a pair of tweezers? Not the freaking visitor, that’s for sure.

Anyway, I’ve cleaned the wound, managed to get it to drink, and put it undercover. I really don’t think it’ll survive the night, but at least it’ll die slightly more comfortably.

(Not to go all forensic pathologist, but the size of the maggots indicate it had been trapped for at least a few days)

I feel so lucky. We’re harvesting many tomatoes every day.

I truly believe that the ability to grow things should be a basic human right

#Gardening #HomeCooking #CountryLife

A bowl of fresh tomatoes

When you have #BorderCollies, it’s like having toddlers. You have to invent little trips outside to control their boredom. Usually, we go outside to check on the chickens, the greenhouses or the veg garden. I just took them outside and came back with 28 apples…

Guess that’s one less tree to finish harvesting ;) #Gardening #CountryLife #DogsOfMastodon

A kitchen counter full of bright red and green apples.

I am so lucky to have a healthy apple orchard. I just ate a freshly-picked apple from the garden with some local cheese and my mind and stomach have both been satisfied.

Now I just have to figure out how to keep them fresh after they’re off the tree.

Apparently, this collection of ingredients made for an awesome risotto/rice that I’m going to call “Impossible Risotto”

I’m going to give you a step by step, but sadly it was so tasty we didn’t photograph the finished product!

Ingredients:

- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, chopped or crushed (add more if you like garlic like I do)
- Two apples, cored, peeled and sliced
- One parsnip, peeled and chopped. You could use a carrot if you want, instead, or some other root veg.
- Assorted fresh veg ( I used a handful of French beans, chopped, a handful of sporting broccoli, and about a half cup of fresh corn).
- A cup of stock, prepared. I used some chicken bouillon because I didn’t have vegetable, but do whatever works!
- two impossible brats, chopped.
- Enough rice for two people. (To taste) use whatever rice you have.
- Fresh rosemary and sage to taste.
- Salt and pepper to taste.

Bad news the apples are completely inedible. They taste chalky with a horrible aftertaste. I do *not* like using the word “Blessed” because of its religious connotations that I do not share.

But I am lucky to have a large garden, and enough time and resources to grow our own fresh food.

And I’ve not visited a greengrocer since early June.

Yesterday I stopped working at Thrunton Farm. We move on the 3rd, so had to stop somewhere, lots of packing to do, gate to rehang, etc.

I couldn't finish some of the wall but there is enough built to support the bank under the road until someone else takes over.

Mixed emotions. Very much looking forward to living in a very different environment. Never left a job unfinished though, feels uncomfortable. Farmer is just happy that I did as much as I could, left on the best of terms. #CountryLife

A length of rebuilt dry stone wall peters out into an unfinished stretch. Some stones are left strewn in the ground in front of it. Behind and over a single track road, some hawthorn trees are at the edge of a field. Cloudy skies.

What was suppose to be a quick morning trip to the blueberry apiary to pick a few buckets of berries and support our local farm turned into a 5 hour slog. It involved them not taking interact, out-of-order ATMs, massive road construction delays, long drive, more road construction delays, 2 trips across a small ferry and back.. But still, worth it to support local food producers. I'm hot and tired now, got nothing else done. Tea time. In future, I think I'm going to just use more cash.

This spring landscape painting is a tranquil scene, rendered in calming tones of green and pink. The soft rolling hills dominate the composition, painted in serene shades of pink, creating a sense of depth and vastness. Nestled amidst the hills is a farmhouse, exuding a sense of rural charm and warmth. On the foreground of this country scene, is an orchard, adding a sense of tranquility to the scene.

I certainly miss the #CountryLife, growing up about an hour south of #yeg! Hopefully the mosquitoes aren't making for unwelcome guests.

We’re quite isolated and don’t get unexpected visitors (normally). And we have a long glass front but face trees and don’t need curtains for privacy (normally). And we have a dog who barks when she hears cars coming over the front hill which gives us plenty of warning (normally).

You can see where this is going.

Crystal barked two seconds before the unexpected visitor knocked on the glass. I had to cringe behind the kitchen counter while Jedi waving at my discarded jeans on the sofa (FYI this did not work).
