A World of Slaves:
Most Americans haven’t seen what’s coming.
Nancy MacLean notes that when the #Kochs’ control of the GOP kicked into high gear after the financial crisis of 2007-08, many were so stunned by the “shock-and-awe” tactics of #shutting #down government, #destroying #labor unions, and #rolling #back #services that meet citizens’ basic necessities that few realized that many leading the charge had been trained in economics at Virginia institutions, especially George Mason University.
Wasn’t it just a new, particularly vicious wave of partisan politics?
It wasn’t.
MacLean convincingly illustrates that it was something far more disturbing.
MacLean is not the only scholar to sound the alarm that the country is experiencing a #hostile #takeover that is well on its way to radically, and perhaps permanently, altering the society.
Peter #Temin, former head of the MIT economics department, INET grantee, and author of "The Vanishing Middle Class", as well as economist Gordon #Lafer of the University of Oregon and author of "The One Percent Solution", have provided eye-opening analyses of where America is headed and why.
MacLean adds another dimension to this dystopian big picture, acquainting us with what has been overlooked in the capitalist right wing’s playbook.
She observes, for example, that many liberals have missed the point of strategies like #privatization.
Efforts to “reform” #public #education and #Social #Security are not just about a preference for the private sector over the public sector, she argues. You can wrap your head around those, even if you don’t agree.
Instead, MacLean contends, the goal of these strategies is to radically alter power relations, #weakening pro-public forces and #enhancing the #lobbying #power and commitment of the corporations that take over public services and resources, thus advancing the plans to #dismantle #democracy and make way for a return to #oligarchy.
The majority will be held captive so that the wealthy can finally be free to do as they please, no matter how destructive.
MacLean argues that despite the rhetoric of Virginia school acolytes, shrinking big government is not really the point.
The #oligarchs require a government with tremendous new powers so that they can bypass the will of the people.
This, as MacLean points out, requires greatly #expanding #police #powers “to control the resultant popular anger.”
The spreading use of pre-emption by GOP-controlled state legislatures to suppress local progressive victories such as living wage ordinances is another example of the right’s #aggressive use of #state #power.
👉Could these right-wing capitalists allow private companies to fill #prisons with helpless citizens—or, more profitable still, right-less undocumented #immigrants? ☑️They could, and have.
👉Might they engineer a #retirement #crisis by moving Americans to inadequate 401(k)s? ☑️Done.
👉Take away the rights of consumers and workers to bring grievances to court by making them sign #forced #arbitration agreements? ☑️Check.
👉Gut #public #education to the point where ordinary people have such bleak prospects that they have no energy to fight back? ☑️Getting it done.
👉Would they even refuse children #clean #water? ☑️Actually, yes.
MacLean notes that in #Flint, Michigan, Americans got a taste of what the emerging oligarchy will look like — it tastes like #poisoned #water. There, the Koch-funded Mackinac Center pushed for legislation that would allow the governor to take control of communities facing emergency and put unelected managers in charge.
In Flint, one such manager switched the city’s water supply to a polluted river, but the Mackinac Center’s lobbyists ensured that the law was fortified by protections against lawsuits that poisoned inhabitants might bring. Tens of thousands of children were exposed to #lead, a substance known to cause serious health problems including brain damage.
Libertarian economist Tyler #Cowen has provided an economic #justification for this kind of #brutality, stating that where it is difficult to get clean water, private companies should take over and make people pay for it. “This includes giving them the right to cut off people who don’t—or can’t—pay their bills,” he explains.
To many this sounds grotesquely #inhumane, but it is a way of thinking that has deep roots in America.
In "Why I, Too, Am Not a Conservative" (2005), Buchanan considers the charge of #heartlessness made against the kind of classic liberal that he took himself to be.
MacLean interprets his discussion to mean that people who “failed to foresee and save money for their future needs” are to be treated, as Buchanan put it, “as #subordinate members of the species, akin to…#animals who are dependent.’”

My wife and I purposely chose not to have children because we felt there were plenty of people on the planet already. We have spent the last three decades lowering our #carbon emissions, successfully reducing them by about 95% while maintaining a nice lifestyle.
Every decision we make is filtered by carbon emissions. It is not a burden. It is a privilege. We are not suffering. Our lives are enhanced by these changes.

Very good interview with Florence Gaub about our perception and thinking about #future and #anxiety management.
What I find to be especially important for preventative #Crisismanagement is that #institutions have to think about possible futures in an open and #creative way, instead of just #planning based on past #information.
For example: Not being able to imagine that #Russia would actually invade #Ukraine or that #Ukraine would mount a successful defence has cost several weeks, even months, that could've been used for #preparation and #contingency planning.
Same goes for many natural #disasters.

I just read about Ring Theory for dealing with #crisis and #trauma. It makes some sense, but I don't fully agree:
Here are the rules. The person in the center ring can say anything she wants to anyone, anywhere. She can kvetch and complain and whine and moan and curse the heavens and say, "Life is unfair" and "Why me?" That's the one payoff for being in the center ring. Everyone else can say those things too, but only to people in larger rings.

We are a family of five living in Bath, #Michigan. All five of us are disabled in different ways, but we have found a way to get by and thrive for many years. However, one parent had a sudden severe downturn of health at the beginning of this summer that has left us unable to continue getting the income that we need. The parent has several chronic medical conditions, #HidradenitisSuppurativa , Elhers Danslos Syndrome, and #POTS, as well as #autism
An infection brought home from school in May has led to a cascading series of medical emergencies, which resulted in hospitalization and a surgical procedure for a deep abscess in the thigh which will take months to heal, as well as physical therapy. The parent was bedbound for over a month, causing me to lose my job. I will still be unable to get a job for several more weeks, but I will be able to resume substitute teaching once the school year begins again and the children return to school in September.
We have to get through one month without being able to work, and we are asking for help to support our family through this difficult period, so that the parent can remain on bed rest and fully recover from the medical procedure.
Our family's chronic health conditions require a very specific diet to prevent events like this. Our children also have many severe food #Allergies This makes us unable to utilize food banks. I have already tried going to many different pantries. There was only one thing that we could eat, and we could not choose what we got, so we ended up with a lot of food that we had to throw away. This is the first abscess like this that the parent has had in four years, and it came when we were low on food and had to eat something we normally would not.
We greatly appreciate any who take the time to read this. We are also unable to get basic household needs and are having to get by without many medications and other essentials. The #Senate #budget #committee held a hearing on Wednesday morning to scrutinize the role of oil- and gas-linked “#dark #money” in delaying climate action – and tearing through local and federal budgets.
The hearing was led by #Senator #Sheldon #Whitehouse of Rhode Island, who has held 10 #climate #crisis-focused hearings since he took the helm of the budget committee this past February
Committee Democrats invited three witnesses. First to the stand was the Harvard history of science professor #Naomi #Oreskes. “Climate change is a market failure, and market failures require government action to address,” she testified.
Fossil fuel interests’ efforts to disrupt climate policy had come at great expense to the US, including not only financial costs, but also human suffering and lives lost, said Oreskes, who has written several books on oil industry misinformation.
#Christine #Arena, former public relations executive at the firm Edelman who now works in social impact film-making, and who was also invited by Senate Democrats, drew comparisons between the fossil fuel industry’s decades-long misinformation campaign and how the tobacco industry tried to cover up the harms of smoking.
“Just like the tobacco executives before them, [fossil fuel executives] characterize peer-reviewed science and investigative journalism that illustrates the extent of their deceptions as biased or inconclusive,” said Arena, who is now the founder of Generous Films.
#Richard #Painter, professor of corporate law at the University of Minnesota Law School who was chief White House ethics lawyer under George W Bush, was third to testify. A political independent, Painter said Americans should get on board with the push to end climate misinformation no matter where they fall on the political spectrum.
“This is not a partisan issue,” said Painter, who was also invited by Whitehouse. “This is about caring, and doing something about a grave threat to the human race.”

The thing that astounds me is, despite the Premiership debacles of May, Johnson, Truss & Sunak.

I tried, many times over the last several months, various agencies and charities and have gotten no help from them insofar as rent arrears go. I have gotten food from them though.

I'm asking friends, family, comrades, allies and kind people to please donate so I can pay landlord what I owe and avoid eviction. This is an emergency. My anxiety and depression has been through the roof over this and I'm tired of feeling so hopeless with no way out of this crisis alone.
