First prairie crocuses seen this spring. Snow melted just this past week along #Meewasin Trail. These were seen just south of #Wanuskewin Park.

Shabbat shalom! Spring flowers, at last! #ShabbatShalom #Flowers #Crocus

A group of several purple crocuses growing among dead leaves and grass. The flowers are purple with orange centers and are wide open because it is so sunny.

I love when #gardeners show a wide shot of their spaces, so here's our courtyard outside the kitchen window, taken yesterday. The fan trained peach grows in the bed at the right, under-planted with spring bulbs. Climbing #hydrangea and #clematis Polish Spirit will cover the trellis later. Beneath them are things that have finished flowering like #crocus and #hellebores, plus a carpet of lily of the valley that's about to burst open.

Alt: It is 82°F in Minneapolis, and two #crocus flowers, bright against the gray-brown leaf litter of winter, lift their very purple petals and very saffron stamens to the warm sunshine, like cups of joy. This has been a #BackyardUpdate

But it’s also crocus season, so it balances out.

Vivid purple crocus flowers in the leaf litter of early spring.

Well #spring is finally happening. Love these #crocus I had the good sense to #plant last spring. Can’t wait to get back into #gardening again. :)

We had a pretty bad #icestorm here in Montreal recently - a huge chunk of the city lost power. We were lucky, and only lost power for 44, and had a generator to keep our snakes warm and our fridge/freezer cold - but despite all of the damage and frustration - I managed to get some pretty good #macro #photo s of #ice on some of the #crocus #flowers that were just about to open up in my #garden

A white and purple crocus, about to bloom, with about 5mm of ice encasing it.

The squirrels did their best to decimate the crocus plants (you can see the ragged edges of the chewed leaves) but they came back and flowered again! #crocus #crocuses #flowers #SpringFlowers #TrumbullCT

Garden tour continued: These years-old clumps of crocuses have diffused into the surrounding area, as they self-seed over time. They seem to spread more successfully in wetter-than-normal years. We've had a few of those in a row and they have been quite successful. It's beautiful now, but will look like a mess later when I'll need to give them a month or so before mowing. The smaller-leaved earlier crocuses are much more lawn-compatible. #garden #gardening #crocus #flowers

Close up of three purple and white striped crocus flowers, with a honey bee descending into one of them.
A clump of deep purple and yellow crocuses with a honey bee on one of them. The vibrant growth and colors of the flowers is offset by the dead brown maple leaves that surround them.
A group of crocuses that have self-seeded as the result of ants carrying the tiny seeds away from the mother plant.

Garden tour continued: The regular non-early crocuses are in full bloom now. I planted many hundreds of them around the back yard years ago. Some clumps, like these, have persisted relatively intact. Others are gone entirely, and still others in the sunnier areas have spread all over the place, with the help of the ants which I've been told by a local botanist carry the tiny seeds away from the parent plant. #garden #gardening #crocus #flower #nature #spring

Low-angle view of bunches of crocus flowers erupting from a leaf-covered lawn. Large trees are visible in the middle distance, one with a large nesting box mounted on it. There is also an antique style water pump and triple rail wooden fencing around a garden, and more trees in the the distance, both bare deciduous trees and some pine trees.

Crocus are one of my favorite signs of renewal. Despite the heavy undergrowth of dead leaves from the previous autumn, these brave bulbs seek out the light and rise again each spring. 🌞 #crocus #spring #SpringFlowers #renewal #pixelfed

What's so special about this cluster of crocuses (croci if you. must)? Well, I took the shot around 1988 in the yard of our first home in Lincoln, Nebraska.

It's a 35mm transparency and honestly looking at it and all the digital stuff I took for the next 20 years or so, I'm confident I ditched film way too soon.

Stopped by St Peter's Church in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland in yesterday's bright sunshine to capture it framed above the carpet of crocuses.
The Saxon tower and west wall to which it is attached are the oldest parts of the church, which was founded AD674.
The site was once part of a monastic settlement, located on the banks of the River Wear.

Croci coming up in Newcastle!

In the Victorian language of flowers, the crocus meant gladness and cheerfulness. White croci represented truth, innocence and purity. The purple variety implied success, pride and dignity. The yellow type meant joy.

There's an episode of Fabulous Folklore dedicated to the crocus!
