For #FensteFreitag here's the bridge of a cruise ship and the officers on it waiting around and looking down at the dock with some consternation. This was earlier this year in Trieste some time after we should have sailed away but the captain decided to wait for people late back from exploring town (or drinking, more likely). When the people did turn up dockside they were roundly booed by passengers, as is only right.

Trust us. This *new company* will absolutely give you the three-year cruise for which the *old company* failed to deliver and never even owned a boat.
The Royal Caribbean #cruise company ordered a third #Oasis-class cruise #ship from STX France.
This new ship, #Harmony of the Seas, was named after the Harmony module of the International Space Station.
When constructed, Harmony of the Seas was the largest cruise ship in the world, but it was subsequently superseded by its successors, Symphony and Wonder of the Seas.
In January of 2023, Harmony entered a launch exclusion zone for a Falcon 9 rocket and delayed the launch by one day.

Passengers had signed up for the experience of a lifetime: three years traveling the world from the comfort of a #cruise ship, at prices that rivaled regular living expenses. But there is no #cruiseship.
A P&O cruise ship, Pacific Adventure, was about to embark on a 13 day tour of NZ but has been turned away because its hull wasn't cleaned.
While I'm happy that our biosecurity is considered to be strict, I'm disappointed that we don't take the same precautions with Covid any longer.
I haven't seen any articles point this out, but #Cruise could not have gotten in trouble for dragging a pedestrian underneath a vehicle if it were using vehicles with low clearance instead of SUVs that have been designed by American automakers to be able to run over people.
I wish that #Cruise wasn't pausing the production of its #Origin vehicle, since the only really good thing about #AutonomousVehicles is the opportunity to completely reimagine how a car looks and functions (and hopefully make them much less deadly to pedestrians).

Busy, slowly lightly processing the pictures taken from our recent holiday. Since it's #SchiffsSamstag and I've reached #Panama where we waited at anchor for a day along with dozens of oil tankers and cargo container ships, why not share a picture from there?
Over and over we’ve been told self-driving cars would solve our transport problems only for them not to deliver.
In 2023, Waymo and Cruise promised us their services had finally cracked the code — but a new scandal in San Francisco shows they deceived us once again. We need to stop falling for their fantasies and take real action to fix our transport system.
We are back after our very nice #cruise from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale via the Panama Canal. We saw a great many lovely new things, although, sadly, civil unrest in Panama stopped us exploring ashore there. You always know there's a risk when you hit the central and southern Americas. Gives us an excuse to return. Biggest pain of a relaxing vacation is all the #travel needed at the end of it to get us home for work tomorrow. Knackered now. But we have caught up with #GBBO so that's okay.
In a recent guest lecture I noted that self-driving cars are still a dicey proposition despite an investment of 30 years and $100bn. Now San Francisco has suspended Cruise operations after its robotaxi drove over and pinned a pedestrian hit by another car to the ground. I know Cruise gives their cars cutesy names, but did they really have to name this one "panini"? 😬
Reading about Cruise cars being more dangerous for kids makes me wonder what other categories of people would be similarly at risk. Disabled people? Elderly? People in strollers? Pregnant women? It feels like a reenactment of the history of seatbelt design biasing towards men’s bodies. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/feb/23/truth-world-built-for-men-car-crashes #Cruise #AutonomousVehicles #RoadSafety

Unfall mit Personenschaden: Cruise verliert Erlaubnis für Betrieb von Robotaxis
Seit zwei Monaten darf Cruise fahrerlose Taxifahrten gegen Bezahlung in San Francisco anbieten. Nach einem Unfall wurde der Firma die Zulassung wieder entzogen.
In the wake of California withdrawing Cruise’s permit to operate self-driving cars in the state, the company announced that it’s suspending all U.S. robotaxi operations.
The move comes after the California Department of Motor Vehicles alleged that Cruise withheld from regulators video footage of a Cruise robotaxi dragging a person down a city street.
The future for the company is uncertain. Its parent company, General Motors, has lost $1.9 billion on Cruise so far this year, including a $732-million loss in the third quarter, according to its latest earnings report.
Competitor Ford shut down its Argo robotaxi unit in 2022, concluding that the possibility of far-off profits weren’t worth the enormous cash drain.

#Carnival fined for running that cruise ship of death in March 2020 anyway. Remember? They weren’t allowed to dock for quite a while.
Good. Finally. Fines. But the decisionmakers should also pay the price, not just the shareholders. FFS. If the punishment never touches the responsible parties we lose.
"Some 900 Covid cases and 28 deaths were linked to an outbreak onboard…. Some 2,671 passengers and 1,146 crew members were on board.”
It is probably illuminating to understand that #GM did not choose the relatively straightforward streets and geography of it's home town #Detroit to test #Cruise self-driving cars. Instead it chose places like #Seattle and #SanFrancisco.
Not sure exactly what it says, but I can understand why they didn’t want those things roaming the same streets as their own families at their current level of safety.
California's DMC has suspended Cruise from operating its driverless taxis in #SanFrancisco, effective immediately.
I noticed a ton of Cruise cars out in the Mission yesterday, far more than usual. I wonder if they knew something was about to happen and were trying to squeeze out as many rides as possible before they got shut down. #RoboTaxi #Cruise
California DMV: "Public safety remains the California DMV’s top priority, and the department’s autonomous vehicle regulations provide a framework to facilitate the safe testing and deployment of this technology on California public roads. We're going to be in an American port to start our upcoming #cruise and it's going to be on a Sunday during football season for the first time for us. I've just had a look to see what sort of activities will be taking place on the ship when we board and it looks like we'll be fine for an #NFL fix, although I'm not sure embarking and watching my #Patriots most likely losing will be the ideal start to the holiday.
Oh Norweigan Cruise Line, what a let down
Your overpriced sailings are just more of the same
You promised much but my experience was unimpressive
A complete lack of ambition, that's what my cruise was

A terrible disappointment that I have to learn
You promised the best, my expectations were high
But unfortunately my cruise was a sad goodbye

#Driverless Taxis Blocked Ambulance in Fatal Accident, San Francisco Fire Dept. Says
"Jeanine Nicholson, chief of the Fire Department, said that 'seconds matter' in such incidents and the problem was that responders were not able to access to the patient."
Every time I read news about the accident of any autonomous vehicle, I find that it makes sense ONLY if all vehicles will be autonomous. Without eliminating the human factor, it makes no sense. Success is only possible with the creation of a closed network of vehicles communicating with each other in real time.

#CPUC just approved, 3-1, unlimited #robotaxi expansion in SF, despite hours of comment in opposition, overwhelming daily evidence the technology is far from ready, and a lack of accountability (the cars cannot be issued moving violations. Like, at all).
This was expected, but it's still infuriating and corrupt. One of the commissioners was a high ranking official at #Cruise just over a year ago and didn't recuse himself.
Just the beginning. The fight continues.
The rebel group stopping #SelfDriving cars in #SanFrancisco – one cone at a time | #TheGuardian
The Safe Street Rebel group has waged a war against #robotaxis in an effort to end vehicle dominance in the city and promote #PublicTransport
"The origins of the group’s tactics are murky, but at some point it was discovered that placing a cone on the hood of a self-driving #car puts it into panic mode, shutting down the $50,000 vehicle until a human employee can come in person to get it unstuck."

I’m interested to see the 2023 reports when they get released. These are all (for #Cruise and #Waymo, at least) from before they were driverless. Full disclosure. We've just had a brilliant holiday (river boat, in and around Venice) with old friends + newfound friends. Please mute Venice and cruise hashtags as I organise the photos, reflect a bit, and post stuff through this week.
Venice is a super special place. There's also a lot of hard physical work going on, in what are almost medieval conditions.

Good morning. 🛳️🛳️🛳️
Third attempt, the connection on our balcony, isn’t so good.
I woke about 6:30 this morning and we were already docked in Cozumel Mexico. I had an espresso while waiting for room service and coffee, there is a machine in the suite. I think I just want a leisurely day in port, maybe just some light shopping.
I checked on Ben and Charlie yesterday, they are doing well. I may have mentioned that Ben was having a couple of minor procedures done while we’re away. He had a cyst removed from his right front paw and a dental cleaning.
