At least, so say the #cryptobros who have jumped upon the bandwagon of Mark Zuckerberg's announcement of having "invented the Metaverse" and are still trying to make a quick dollar.
All of this is complete humbug. #SecondLife is going to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, and it is a 3-D #VirtualWorld all right, all without requiring a #blockchain or a #cryptocurrency or NFTs.
And Zuckerberg wasn't even the first to use the term Metaverse, not even for something that isn't pure fiction. #OpenSimulator has been around for 16 years with no blockchain, no cryptocurrency (in most cases, no currency at all) and no NFTs, and it's as decentral as #Decentraland claims to be but isn't. The term "metaverse" has been used in the #OpenSim scene at least since 2008 when the #Hypergrid was introduced.
So all this Web3 non-sense only works because mainstream and tech media believed that there was no operational 3-D virtual world, at least not "for grown ups", when Zuckerberg announced "the Metaverse". #HorizonWorldsIsNotTheMetaverse.
Interesting discussion, with some good points on both sides. I have an idea for a compromise, a reconciliation, a better way. Instead of stepping into the eternal battle between force and counterforce and identifying with one, I will offer something new that opens with the gentle force of a blossoming flower, smiling up at the Sun, knowing how many of its comrades died under the concrete and were not privileged to see the sunlight.
I propose a cryptocurrency with 3 goals:
1. Be environmentally friendly. Ethereum uses Proof of Stake which leads to Oligarchy. Bitcoin uses Proof of Work which leads to wasted electricity. Instead, use a Proof of Computational Work done on Socially Beneficial Projects.
2. Be private. Each citizen should have anonymity guaranteed,
3. Have Universal Basic Income built in. Periodically, a share of all the wealth will get allocated equally to each citizen. Commerce can go on as usual. People can create things and sell them. Do whatever with them. But the money truly will trickle down, as a guaranteed feature of the system. The people at the bottom will not live with food insecurity.
This currency won't need private property to be abolished overnight. But private property will be displaced by the common good, by the sheer force of the masses choosing this currency over the Dollar or the Pound.
Will this create a class of slackers, freeloaders, "takers", who contribute nothing of material value to the economy? We will just have to get past this phenomenon. If wealth were really distributed fairly, if the fruits of technological advancement were to create a life of leisure, then surely we expect people to have lots of resources and nothing to do with their time.
Will society fall into chaos and meaninglessness when people are able to live without the fear of poverty? Will decadent societies raised on violent movies and games turn to needless crime, just to have something to do? Will we become couch potatoes plugged into VR headsets, consuming junk?
Do we necessarily need Pharoahs whipping us into shape hauling blocks into Pyramids, or Priests telling us to carve stones into deities? Will we go crazy with too much time on our hands?
We could find meaning in Arts and Sciences, in a life of Splendid Uselessness, in being lifelong learners and teachers. The whole planet would be run by volunteers. Volunteer Beekeepers of Earth. Volunteer Linux SysAdmins of Earth. We would get up and do things we choose to, because they are fun for us, and serve the community at large. We would mediate and heal our minds, and discard the violence we absorbed in the past. That day could come soon. We have to make it happen.

Articles like this couldn't be more simple or lazy. Nobody was expecting #Mastodon to replace #Twitter. That wasn't the intention. The idea was to remind users they have options in a concentrated & centralised Internet environment. Also, Mastodon showed users that decentralised applications are not exclusive to existing tech bros (look at #NFTs & #cryptocurrencies).Users can get the benefits of decentralised architecture which also support #decentralised decision-making.
